I can't even remember the last game I finished on a handheld.  It was probably one of the GBA Fire Emblems.  I even lost interest in the FFV Job Fiesta because I was playing on my iphone.

Handhelds are good if you're in a position where actually having time in front of the TV is limited.  I work long-ass hours, my wife wouldn't complain but I know she has no interest in vidya and I'm not an ass, and my son wants to play games with me, not watch me play games.  So really for me, 95% of the time, it's handheld games or no games.

I play games after my wife and kid have gone to bed. I don't play when I could be doing stuff with them.

My kid's 14, so he's up pretty late.  And I dunno, maybe cuz I've only been married a year, but I feel bad if I don't go to bed at the same time the missus does.

I don't stay up late every night and if going to bed at the same time is the right thing to do (ie. sex, gotta get up early, etc.), I do it. That said, I still manage probably 5 hours of game time a week, which isn't bad.

The last handheld game I played through to the end was FFVII Crisis Core. As great as KH is, I just get bored playing it on a tiny screen.

Play it with TV Out, no more small screen.

seriously, PSP has got to be one of the best handheld systems simply because it can be a home console with a single cable. Wasn't there another handheld console that did this? I forget which one it was.

It really sucks that the PSP2000/3000 doesn't render in full screen when you play with TV Out. Also sucks that Vita doesn't have HDMI out either. WiiU may be somewhat salvageable if they made a 3DS player for the thing. (a lot of my GB/C/A playing was on the Game Boy Player for the Cube)

I dunno, man.  Take a sample of the married guys on this board and a sample of the single guys, check and see which group seems more likely to put a gun to their head tomorrow.

The relationship thread backs this up.

Catherine sold about 25% of what P4 did.

I expect P5 to be very much in the manner of P4, right down to its relative choice of platform.

FWIW, a couple of the GAF mods (aeana and duckroll) have strongly implied that it's for PS4. That'd be very surprising giving Atlus' platform history, I know, but IIRC they have a fairly good track record on such things.

PS4 dev kits aren't as expensive as the PS3 dev kits were initially. Atlus can probably afford to switch to next-gen sooner this time. Then again I wouldn't be  surprised to see Persona 5 for a number of other platforms.

It's probably costly to retool the game for a different architecture. Building a medium budget RPG from scratch for the PS4 shouldn't be that much more expensive. I imagine Gust will jump ship quite soon. They can keep many of the same old art assets and just increase the resolution and add some more post-processing effects and most of their fans will be perfectly happy with it.

It's not the cost of the devkits, it's the cost of development.  Going next gen might result in a longer tail, while going current gen will get them more cash upfront.  The game was in development for years for current gen, so it probably wouldn't be too hard to walk it back.  And Index needs cash now, not later.

Sweet, I'm betting on Grouch.  I may get to play Persona 5 on release after all.  I have really fond memories of playing P4 at the end of the PS2 gen.

I imagine it would easier to port something to a more powerful system. You can cut some corners by not optimizing everything.

Given how hard ps3 is to develop for I'm sure migrating to ps4 wouldn't be hard. Also the game is an Atlus game so it'll have far less assets than say a FFXV.

X86 architecture is easier yeah but Japanese devs aren't all too familiar with it no? So PS3/X360 might be easier for them.

Ps4 is easier to develop for. For a smaller dev like Atlus I'm sure that saves lots of time. Also, remember. The rumors indicate ps4 but also say nothing about bone. Similarly they said nothing about XV on bone. Who knows.

Hmm, true. I completely forgot the amount of time spent developing the game. I thought they started in 2011/2012 after Catherine with the game being in pre-production for a few years but that could just be marketing speak that led me to believe that.

I have no clue what thing that was supposed to happen. Probably because it doesn't exist.

They didn't add one for P4G so maybe not. It wouldn't be unprecedented as SMT ...if allow a choice between female player and male player, but Persona isn't SMT. Then again P2EP starred a female protag.  I'd like to say it's unlikely but definitely possible.

I think a big problem they have with going with two genders is that Persona traditionally has anime cutscenes and having two versions wouldn't be cost effective. Then again, I'm not sure how it was handled in P3P.

edit: just watched the female protag version of protag Persona awakening in p3p. Good lord. :snoop

That utterly depends on whether they're going to age the characters to appeal to an older demo or not. If they're in college or post-college, the more the likelihood of a female protag increases.

yes, it will be smart to put the game on ps3/360, which are at the end of their life. jrpg console fans are starved, and jrpg releases that come out within the launch window of consoles almost NEVER happen, especially quality ones. it would be oh so smart to not put this on next gen systems. I mean, you ALWAYS make more money you're competing with other people versus having NO COMPETITION!

Nothing surprises me this generation. 2nd Super Robot Wars OG was in developmental hell for years. It had a release date at one point and even cover art, and was then delayed another year and a half until November 2012.
