How to kill the stench of blood death and rot?
« on: July 07, 2013, 04:44:58 PM »
Lets say you come back from two weeks in paradise to find your fridge and freezer defrosted. Food rotten and stuff dripped on the floor.

How do you kill that deep death smell? I cleaned the whole floor already and the inside of the fridge but the smell is still there (told the landlady we need a new fridge asap too).

Was thinkinh of using some vinegar on the tiles since that usually kills every odour.

The smell is so deep and disgusting I can only compare it to when i was working in a factory as a teen cleaning big tubs with 2 week old blood from fish.

Kill a couple of hookers and let them rot for a few days.  The stench will worsen initially, but eventually the nastiness will lap itself and you'll start over back at zero!

This is true, there is only so much rot-stench per cubic foot of air. Once the limit is reached, it transfers to a pocket dimension*

ok jokes aside you'll need bleachy sprays (like clorox with bleach), drag everything out and mop/clean it with bleach. Also mop the walls/ceilings for pretty much the entire area. that should do 99% of it.

We went on vacation for two weeks and something happened with the plumbing that put shit in our upstairs toilet for who knows how long while we were gone. it was terrible; we pretty much sanitized the whole house as a result.

Put lemon in whatever you use. It will help with smells. If the sink starts to smell I just squeeze lemon down it if there is no disposal, otherwise you can just chuck half a lemon down there.

your fridge should be ok; just go hardcore mode and pull all the shelves/cabinets out and soak em in a tub with soap and shit.

If it dripped on the floor it probably got under and behind the fridge too, make sure to clean there as well. You could try plugging in a fan and aiming it past the fridge into the area you go the least. It won't get rid of the smell but at least you will be able to somewhat control where it is at.

Also get an army of these to create a barrier between your fridge and habitable areas. They're pretty cheap, only like 88 cents, even less if you get 3 packs

Make sure and get some on your shoes, where the bird pooped.

NO, NO, NO. Bad idea. Any bleach gets on your sac or dingus, and you'll be cursing the skies, and willing to sacrifice any pair of pants in your armoire. Wear something throwaway.

This happened to me two years ago. My kid turned off the dial on my fridge/freezer right before we left for a vacation. Came back to a putrid mess.

We seriously contemplated getting rid of the fridge (which was brand new) and getting a new one. But after about 3-4 weeks the smell eventually went away.

You just have to keep masking the smell. I found that cinnamon spray/candles worked the best. Also, buy a bunch of baking soda boxes and keep them in there.

Also, don't forget to thoroughly clean inside the rubber baffle that seals the door to the fridge. There are lots of nooks and cranny in there that can contain the smell. Pull it all the way out as far as you can and clean all around it.

Also, many fridges contain 'drip pans' underneath the unit. Pull off the grate and try to locate it and clean the shit out of it.
