Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection
« on: July 08, 2013, 09:33:08 PM »
Is anyone interested in this? It's being released tomorrow and I have it preordered since I've skipped the HD collection and never played PW.

For $50 you get:

Do you guys think this is worth it? I'm starting to have second thoughts, though something tells me it'll be hard to find some time in the future.

Only you would question if every single Metal Gear title in one box aside from the handheld titles is worth it. Come on, boo.  It's worth it if you haven't bought the HD Collection, which doesn't include MG1 and 2.

I'd say it's worth it for MG2 alone if you haven't played it. It is entirely ahead of its time, and is basically MGS1 in 2d. Literally. It's even almost as cinematic.

I admit I never played MG1 and 2 for more than a few minutes when they were released with MGS3. The first game I'll prolly tackle is PW since it's the only mainline MGS I skipped. From there I'm playing 2HD and 3HD, in any order.

Are the Ashley Wood comics the ones released for the PSP? I remember messing around with one of them and enjoying the presentation, not sure how important or canon both are though.

But you're right: the package has so much value that I should just stick with it. On the one hand I've been buy too much vidya this summer, on the other I haven't been buying too much vidya all year.

Were they in the original MGS3 HD? Because the one in this collection is still 3 HD, not Subsistence.

I don't know.  Other than if you don't already own 4,1 and VR its still cheaper than the HD collection.  Its a shame they left out PO and maybe GB just to really feel complete.

HD collection has substance and subsistance, they are just called by the original names for marketing.

I'm aware of that, but I was under the impression the HD games didn't include *everything* in the originals for one reason or the other.

MGS4 may actually be worth going through again with trophies and the latest "install entire game to hd"  patch. Speedruns are actually possible.

I think the HD versions only lack the multiplayer of MGS3, as does the 'Trophy Edition' of MGS4 included in his collection.  Neither online mode works anymore, so no real loss there.

They skip out on the online mode and the skateboarding thing from 2.  Nothing anyone actually cares about.

oh, right, that skateboarding.  also that dream hack and slash sequence in MGS3.

I didn't know about these omissions.

mgs3 hd doesnt have multiplayer obviously, but they also cut a ape escape minigame and a bonus mode that had a shitload of goofball takes on cutscenes from the game

edit: oh yeah no awesome skateboarding either

:lol i tried to go thru the game again after trophies were added. took about five minutes (at least) to get past the first map with all the loading from cutscene skipping. i gave up after that.

and speedrunning the game sucks because chapter 3 and 4

Yup, you're right. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=69017501&postcount=347

So to answer Himu, the extras/point of this collection would be:
- MGS4 :piss2
- Two digital comics
- Artbook and poster
- 92+ Metacritic

The mini game where you catch the apes?
I also remember enjoying the outtakes video (or whatever that was), and I never bought substance so I don't remember the skateboarding mode, but I would have loved to try it. It's like they're trying to strip all the wackiness when it's one of my favorite aspects of the games.

Ahahaha I remember MGS3 dream thing. What the fuck WAS that?

What dream thing? Youtube please.

The dream occurs during the prison escape.

I remember when the game came out I assumed it was a prototype for a new 3d Castlevania.

Honestly, I think I'm canceling my preorder. PW is the only game I *really* want and a used HD collection is much much cheaper.

so why was it cut?

Probably because it *was* a prototype of sorts that wasn't warmly received by execs and nerds alike.

Since it was somewhat a sneak release, one they're not making a big deal out of and it's exclusive to the PS3, I have a feeling it's a limited print. One that will go on to becoming a rare item.

I'm gonna get this for the MSX games. Never played those and really want to, along with Peace Walker HD (own it for PSP but never played). I wish they'd make a remake of Ghost Babel one of these days too, itching to try that out as well :P

BTW were the Portable Ops games any good?

I love MGS4 and I still can't tolerate Peace Walker. It's just a crappy game with very visible hardware/budget limitations. Keep in mind that I'm also a massive PSP stan, and would praise as many games as I could for that system. Peace Walker is not praise-worthy, nor is it worth any of your time.

Wait? Does this collection feature the last work of David Hayter as Snake? I don't remember the Digital Novel of 1 having voice acting and MGS2's comic having English voice acting and here thy do with seemingly most of the orginal's cast. Seems kind of like a big deal.

Edit, according to Hayter they aren't new. I bet they were done back when MGS4 was coming out. I remember MGS2's comic was supposed to come out and it never did here, just got a Japanese only DVD release. I'm assuming a release was planned for the US, so they did dub them. But plans fell through and I guess the work was just sitting around. So I guess they just decided to throw it in the collection to add to the value.

I just got my hands on this. First impression: The "Artbook" is the size of the regular PS3 case and it's total rubbish lol. It's almost completely comprised of thumbnails lifted from other artbooks, pamphlets, and works. There's barely any normal size text for you to read. It's just 100 pages of ads really. :lol

Second impression: "Why the hell did I buy this? I don't feel like playing any of these games any time soon."

The game comes with 2 discs: First is literally MGS HD Collection, and the second is MGS4. Zero alterations made.

Hey theres those digital comics now on the HD collection disc, sure you acsess them from the XMB video section. But its some kind of addition.

Not sure what you expected, it just looked like a cheap re-release. I mean it dosent even have every MGS game.
