Hey guys, I need some help
« on: January 12, 2007, 02:34:17 PM »
Since quitting my job a little over 3 months ago, I've been incredibly lazy.  I'm starting to realize that that's probably just how I am.  Frankly, I don't view it as a bad thing anymore.  I'm much more relaxed after quitting my job and don't want to put that kind of stress back into my life.

I rarely leave the house these days, so I kind of came up with a cool idea:  what if I could convince a psychiatrist that I was agoraphobic?  Can't you collect some kind of check for that?  I have no problem never leaving my house again, or at least being seen doing it.  How should I go about this?

I'm pretty sure you don't collect money for being an agoraphobe. Stop being a drain on the economy.

I like you, Triumph, I do. And I know what a bad job feels like. But hanging out inside all day just makes you a loser, not a victim. Join Couchsurfing and lose yourself in Spain for awhile or something.

Welcome to the "the bottom", you just hit it.

Do you live in a small, shitty town? If so, I highly recommend moving to a big city. It's what worked for me when I was in a similar funk when I was 23. I got to meet an enitirely new group of peers, got rid of tv and the internet and just lived life. Finished up school and found a decent job.

It wasn't all good, but it sure beat sitting in the same tired city watching everything slowly die and decay around me.

Sadly, I live in Atlanta.  I have no real excuse.

I actually am trying to find a new job.  I spam out another resume every 15 minutes or so.  Just not having much luck with it is all.  Also having problems with the girl probably has something to do with my general level of funk.

Anyone ever see I Heart Huckabees?  I feel like Marky Mark's character after he finds out that Jason Schwartzman and the French chick are getting it on- he completely withdraws into himself and stares blankly at a tv, watching a monster truck rally.

The job hunt can be very demoralizing. Have you considered moving to a place with more opportunity? Sometimes just starting over is the best thing a person can do for themselves. It worked for me, at least.

Definitely, yeah.  But I have no money right now, so it's hard to move.  My plan is actually to get a shit job or two in Atlanta for a couple of months, work my ass off and save some scratch, and then get the hell out, maybe to NYC or something.  I don't think I could get bored in NYC.

Move dude, its the best thing you can do at this point. Just cut ties and start fresh. But yeah, get a few crap jobs and save. Also job hunt while youre saving. Maybe you can land a job and move FOR the job instead of moving without a job waiting for you.

NYC is great, I adore it, but it really is expensive. I thought my 500$ a month was a steal (And it is), until I realized I could move a few states over, shack up with my lady and pay 175$. But you know how it goes.

I mean, I spent the last few months at the bottom. Mostly it took a few freak occurences to make things feel "possible" again. It's still hard and it's so easy to backslide into hopelessness (See: Now.), but sometimes you just need to tough through it. Frost once said, "The best way out of something is through", which is unfortunately true. Usually, the best thing for me is to do something crazy. It can jog your sense of self and your sense of possibility. It's a nice reminder.

Thanks man.  You're right, I'm going to bet the rest of my meager cash reserves on a 3 team parlay this weekend and then move to Kuala Lampur.  Maybe.  Probably not.

You know what would be frustrating?  Not making the bet and then watching every single one of my picks come true.  Which is probably what will happen.  Sigh.

One thing that really kind of carried me through was volunteering. I taught a bunch of 8-10 year olds about nutrition once a week. And once or twice a month (Tommorrow, actually), I get up at 7 AM on a Saturday, bundle the fuck up and head out to Nowheresville, Bronx to help give out food in rain and cold. It didn't make me feel as good as I thought it would, but it definitley gave me focus and purpose, at least. Might help to do something in your case, I met some cute girls that way, too.

Look at the bright side. Even though your finances are limited, think of ALL the options you have that many do not. You don't have any mortgage, children, sick parents or a wife holding you down.

The prison you've created is in your own head.

I hate moving, ill never do it again, but moving back to Washington from Arizona, despite the personal losses ( :( ) was worth it in the end. I went from having no potential to have tons.

Lack of money doesnt mean you cant live, or cant accomplish something. It just means you cant accomplish something while being comfortable. I worked crap retail for four years, didnt get promoted in the job until the latter half of the third year. Yeah it sucked working two jobs during the holidays, always talking to bill collectors and having no time to do anything, but that eventually ends and if things are handled correctly you come out a better/stronger person, even IF you arent making gobs of money.

Life's a journey etc etc..

Where do you live that you're paying $500 a month?  I literally live in a closet and I'm paying $650.

I live in a sun room, but I'm not gonna say what I'm paying as it's Atlanta and doesn't count.

Also, girl from girl problem just fucking called me after we agreed on Monday that it would be best if we didn't talk for a while (like, AFTER HER DIVORCE WAS FINALIZED).  WTF is wrong with women?  :(

If u need some quick cash, I hear that people into genital mutilation porn are always looking for new performers.  Mainly because a performer can only "perform" once.

Moving to a large city can do wonders for your motivation and opportunity. I had a hell of a time finding a job in the small town I lived in in Ohio, and it was pretty discouraging -- for a while I got into a groove where I just didn't WANT to work and did nothing but play video games ALL day. And I mean ALL day -- usually at least 12 hours :S

Now, though, since I am back in a large city and there's more opportunity and more stuff to do, I feel a million times better. Now, I find myself almost RELIEVED when I get home from work and am too burnt out to do stuff like play games. Keeps me a little more productive.

I don't think I want to have this conversation with you, because you're young and have to this point had a pretty sheltered life where, in all likelihood, you can't conceive of someone my age not knowing what the fuck is going on with their life.

I know a little bit about agoraphobia just from my studies, and it's very debilitating and very serious. I doubt anyone who didn't actually have it would be able to 'fake' it, so to speak.

Is there any way you could work from home? I've been reading more and more recently about jobs with telecommuting options, where you often work from home or even exclusively from home. Of course, the hard part is landing such a job, and I agree with everyone else saying the job hunt is difficult. Good luck to you, though. =)
