Xbox brand being around for 12 years gets me.  It's strange to me that youngsters grew up with the Xbox brand and might even have nostalgia for it.  Same with Playstation, to a lesser extent, and the opposite when it comes to Sega.

I work with some peeps in their early 20's, when the topic of gaming comes up and I mention some Dreamcast stuff I've been playing lately (the system, not the game) most often they give me a blank, uncomprehending stare.

and it blows my mind to think of a 12 year old kid today who thinks of PS1 games the way I thought of early 80's Atari.

Sons of Liberty and GTA 3 are almost twelve years old  :fbm My life wasn't that much better then but I was a lot less crazy. I had dreams. Two years later I would experience the first symptoms of a condition that would plague me for the rest of my life.

It really puts things into perspective. The kid who was 5 years old when 360 came out is now 13. These kids grew up with this entire generation.

I was a freshman in college at the end of my first year when 360 was first revealed on MTV. I have graduated college and more since then. I got a psp around that time period at launch, I was playing Ridge Racer, Lumines, and Wipeout. A few weeks later I was playing Digital Devil Saga 1 and SMT 3. I was 19 years old. I am now 27.

Holy shit.

I was a marginally employed, unattached loser.

...

...

...

Shit.

(This is just partially true, as I was also pretty much a drunk back then and now just drink very occasionally, and not ever to the extent that I used to.  Also, I'm not really so much of a loser any longer.  So much, anyway.)

I remember a few weeks ago going to Gamestop and the girl there was trying to get me to preorder PS4... and I said something like "can't believe they are already releasing new systems, felt like the 360/PS3 just came out..." and she said "this is the longest generation of gaming consoles since the Atari days". And then I thought about it and yeah, she was right... where the hell did time go?

I haven't realized how long this gen was. The 360 came out when I was in the 7th grade and now I'm in my 3rd year of college.

I remember begging my dad to buy Devil May Cry and being so happy when I bought it. I also got to eat at Fuddruckers! That was back in 4th grade.

I remember going with my mom and my mate to pick up MK2 and then having him sleepover and we played that shit ALL NIGHT.

I was 10.

Freshman here. Fuck that Christmas season owned so damn hard, even if I found FFX and MGS2 disappointing.

I was a junior in high school when FFVII came out. Senior when MGS came out. Shit, I remember being psyched when FFIII(VI) came out for the SNES when I was in the 8th grade.

My 18-month old daughter's first real exposure to consoles will probably this upcoming generation of PS4/Xbone.

Assuredly so, as this is probably the LAST console generation. :heh

I keep hearing this. The twin consoles this gen have moved nearly 80 million units each. Where is this prediction coming from? ios sales? People thought Facebook games were the future and that bubble already popped. I don't think tablet gaming is going to kill consoles anytime soon.

We will see. With consoles focusing on becoming living room media appliances, and with Internet consumption transitioning to appliances like tablets and phones, who is to say where we'll be in five years?

There are children now who will remember Minecraft like current game designers remember Mario

God those kids will make some awesome games one day. The future is bright 8)

Escalating dev costs + cycles, publishers not wanting to fund anything that's not a hit, developers already dying by the double fistful, declining sales the past several years... I mean, any of these things individually are BAD.  Add them all up?  Disastrophe, baby.
