I played the beta version back in the day, it was interesting although very limited on what you could actually do.  I think the full version does a better job of having consequences for your actions, though.

decided to try this,it's nice... it starts pretty simple with you just checking ID's and refusing immigrant access but as the game progress the situation falls for the worse and more document and rules get added into the mix which in turns make your job harder, once in a while you are asked to take a moral decision... for example

spoiler (click to show/hide)
- a couple enter the border, the husband has a passport but the wife doesn't,do you admit the wife anyway?
- a girl tells you one of the next people in line is a brothel owner and is forcing her to work for him,but he has a passport and nothing is wrong with him,do you refuse him entrance anyway and save the girl?
- once in a while you'll find someone whose name doesn't match, after checking his fingerprint if his fingerprint doesn't match you have the option to arrest him or let him go
[close]

your choice don't seems to make a lot of difference (so far i've been trying to stick to the rule and basicaly being patty from the simpsons) but apparently there are around 20 ending based on what you do and it's basicaly that "ah-ah!" feeling of finding discrepancies of phoenix wright meets the feel of power of being a public officer

each day is timed and the more people you get right the more money you get at the end of the day,the problem is that basic rent and food cost a lot so you can barely survive and you get lot of "your wife is cold and sick and hungry" message... alas so far nobody has died of dysentery

the game seems to avoid monotony to what sounds like an incredibly repetitive and boring concept by having an ongoing plot on the background and by adding something at the end of each day for example as i said at the start you only have to check if they are or not native... right now i have to

spoiler (click to show/hide)
- check if the reason why an immigrant is going to stay matches with what the immigrant said
- check how long an immigrant is going to stay matches with what the immigrant said
- check if the photo matches
- check if the sex matches (you'll be surprised by the amount of androgynous people in this game)
- check if the name on the ID code matches with the name on the permit transit
- check if the ID code matches with the permit transit code
- check if the ID expired
- check if the permit transit expired
- check if the ID was released by a legitimate city
- if the immigrant comes for work, check if they have a work permit
- check if the work permit hasn't expired
- all people of a certain nationality must be searched
- oh and if they have something illegal point it out

Okay, Beta goes just until Day 8

yeah coincidentaly i've played up to day 8,not sure how many days there are before the end of the game

EDIT: oh apparently the whole game is 31 days, and there are actualy only 8 different ending while the remaining 12 are small variation... i think i hit the first big plot switch which was pretty amazing

spoiler (click to show/hide)
some weird masked hood gave me a slip of paper with a bunch of random letters on it,later i got another piece of paper with a few hole on it,i combined the two and it spelled the name of someone who wasn't supposed to enter,i let him enter and now there has been a big terrorist attempt and some nazi general is on my tail :lol

helping the faction gave me a LOT of money but the game gave me the option to burn it away, which i did!

i get really angry at the game (and myself) when i start playing after a hiatus because i constantly miss stuff. then after about 10 minutes i manage to pull my shit together.

I'm about halfway through the game based on day count. Lots of interesting stuff happening. It continues to pile on the bureaucratic bullshit you have to check and one of the latter mechanics is pretty weird.

Yup. It purposely talks about things you can't see or test so I was worried I'd fuck up. Thankfully I nailed it.

Right now I'm sitting on a decent amount of savings

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unlike you I kept the money from Ezic which I used for 2 days until it was confiscated. But since I wasn't using my own money for those days I ended up with about 70 buffer. From there now I'm doing good with the various bribes and extra money I can earn. Plus even better, I was cleared of suspicion but the money was never returned to me.

i've got to day 24 and i'm really torn on this game

- it's nothing like you've played... yes, this is a pretty common phrase to impress some dumb idiot into biting the bullet but this time,it really applies! the most important thing in this game is your attention span and your focus, because you have to keep track of like 12-13 things that can all be wrong

- it's really well done, the graphics are simple but full of details, each document is different and at a certain point you get to detains passport and a drawer appear and when you detain the whole thing goes into a sealed envelope

- the moral choice don't matter much, there is already some guide on gamefaqs and it looks like most of the ending are just variation of game overs (out of 20 you get like 6 of them by different variation of shooting at people) and most of the time the right moral choice is to break the rules for the greater benefit

- at day 24 this game is helllllllllll, really there is just so much stuff i have to check that there isn't even enough space in the interface to put all the document and it's becoming frustating, but at the same time this is like exactly what i would expect and i'm so close to the end that i can't stop anyway

I finished this, some spoilers on my endings inside:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
There are 31 days. In the last few days, it becomes apparent that shit is rapidly going south for Arstotzka.

Jorji (the wacky old man who's constantly bringing forged documents) comes back and lets me know that, thanks to my kind-hearted lenience, he's living well as a smuggler. He puts me in touch with someone who can forge passports for me and my family to Orbristan. These cost $25 each AND they require an (illegally) confiscated Obristan passport to generate. So the last few days I'm stealing passports and doing my best to save enough money to get my family out.

I am able to get me, my wife and my son out. However, my uncle and mother-in-law are left to their own devices. Glory to Obristan!

This was ending 16 of 20.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
they are all bad, horrible ending except the one you just mentioned and one of them where you become an EZIC agent

Ending 1 Occurs if you end up in debt. "Arstotzka has zero tolerance for delinquency. Your family will be sent back to their village. You are under arrest until your debts are repaid. A replacement inspector will be found easily. Glory to Arstotzka. "
Ending 2 If your entire family dies from sickness.
Ending 3 Day 12, when the Inspector tells you about the "suspicious group", give him the EZIC cipher or decoder. You will be arrested while your involvement with suspicious groups is investigated.
Ending 4 Accept the 1000cr EZIC gift. On Day 14, do not allow the EZIC agent entry. The Inspector greets you on Day 15 and arrests you and your family pending an investigation into your finances.
Ending 5 Kill someone in the crowd with the rifle. You are sentenced to death.
Ending 6 Tranquilize someone in the crowd. You are sentenced to manual labor.
Ending 7 Kill a guard with the rifle. You are sentenced to death.
Ending 8 Tranquilize a guard. You are sentenced to manual labor.
Ending 9 Kill the man in red on Day 23. You are sentenced to death. An EZIC agent slips you a note promising to care for your family.
Ending 10 Tranquilize the man in red on Day 23. You are sentenced to labor. An EZIC agent slips you a note promising to care for your family.
Ending 11 Be caught with items other than performance plaques hung on the wall twice. You are sentenced to manual labor.
Ending 12 Detain Shae on Day 25. The supervisor visits the following day and falsely accuses you of theft. You are sentenced to manual labor.
Ending 13 Do not cooperate with EZIC. On the final day, when they attack the border, save yourself by shooting the bottom agent but allow the top agent to destroy the wall. You are arrested for failing to defend the border.
Ending 14 Cooperate with EZIC until the final day, and then shoot the agents. The Inspector uncovers your involvement with EZIC and you are to be executed for treason. An EZIC agent slips you a note refusing to assist you.
Ending 15 Allow the agents to destroy the wall on the final day, but attack the agents. The EZIC revolution succeeds but you are now their enemy. You and your family are murdered.

i don't really agree on the moral bit,a lot of the time breaking the rules and doing the right thing rewards you with a medal and sometimes even more money than you would have got if you followed the protocoll... there is very little repercussion, heck even one bad ending is got for sticking to the rules perfectly

...they should have added a special ending you get if you go through the whole game with a perfect record

Started playing this tonight.  I only just now realized I'm supposed to toggle with the options concerning my families health...I thought it was being deducted from my salary automatically! Son and Uncle have already taken a dirt nap, but it's for the good of Artstotzka I suppose  :-\

e: looks like it is being deducted as default, they just died anyway. fuck. :-\

Little interview with the guy behind this on Reason: http://reason.com/archives/2013/09/26/papers-please-politics-in-games-and-the

Quote
Reason: Your game has gotten a lot of attention. Were you expecting this response? Can you reveal how many copies you've sold so far?

Pope: I wasn't expecting this response at all. Papers, Please was intended as a small experimental project that I'd finish off before working on something more marketable. I'm extremely happy with the overwhelming response it's gotten. I'll be posting a devlog update with actual sales numbers soon but for now I'll say it's sold wildly beyond my expectations.

Finished the game with a few endings, including the one of the final day endings.

Liked it a lot, though wish it was shorter cause it's kind of repetitive and can be boring to a degree.

Also I couldn't figure out how to trigger a denial for an expired polio vaccine.  There's nothing in the rulebook that says VACCINATION PAPER MUST BE CURRENT.  Only that entrant must have a valid vaccination paper.  I inspecting that line and the vaccination paper as a whole, the date, the polio and nothing.  Then I went to Docs in the rulebook and brought up vaccination paper and compared the outdated paper with everything on there and still nothing.  So since I couldn't figure out a way to set off the denial I had to either approve him and get a penalty for expired vaccination paper or deny him and get a violation for not providing a denial reason.

Only thing that pissed me off in the game.  Especially since that 5 credit penalty I got from it is the only thing that kept me from getting my class 5 apartment at the very end when I was 5 credits short!  >_<
