BUY BUY BUY OBEY

it is a really great movie. Just another in a long line of great John Carpenter movies.

Knowing that Rodney's character was used as the inspiration for Duke Nukem is so cool.

In the 70's and 80's yeah...

I think Into the Mouth of Madness and Escape from LA are also great. But yeah its been a decline from there. Nobody stays great forever.

I'm sure the Carpenter still has one good film left in him. But will he die before he makes it?

It's pretty much a race against time. Sortof like Action Bronosons race to become a good rapper. Lose weight, appear in a few family friendly shows, start rapping about flying ponies.

actually, the reason Mr. Carpenter is so no working anymore is because he made so much cash.  I think he made more from selling his remake rights then he did his actual films though.  He's also highly committed to his Xbox Live career (for reals).

His last film, The Ward.  Isn't bad per se, but sure wasn't worth getting him out of retirement for.  I'd love some more great films out of him, but I don't think he has the passion anymore, and he'd rather not sully his rep just phoning it in (this is called pulling an Argento)

Also, next to Robocop, They Live is the best action movie/political satire ever made.  Love it.

Last line of the movie:

"What's wrong, baby?"

i actually thought Roddy Piper was a pretty good actor, although there is a bit of that 80s cheese to it.  i was expecting him to look goofy on the screen but he was actually okay.

I think it helps (not that the person is, but he's a limited actor) that Mr. Piper is playing a pretty stupid character.  By which I mean, the protagonist does plenty of awesome stuff but his only solution to every problem is to blindly rush towards danger and kick its ass.

And there has never been a better idiot hero then Nada (here's a hint to his intelligence, he's named Nada).  Almost every problem he encounters could have been solved with a more thoughtful approach, but fuck that shit, you're gonna wear those glasses or you're gonna eat this trash can.  Maybe only Kurt Russell at his Jack Burton-ist could have played the part, but I really can't imagine anyone else in the role doing it better.  Who else could so embody a charismatic, invincible blue collar dupe?

also, I keep meaning to grab a copy of this.  I best hurry before it becomes too much of a rare item.

that's right, two hundred and eight pages of scholarly discourse on They Live.  Damn right the movie deserves it.

Agrees, and agreed, sadly. Carpenter still deserves more respect than he's commonly accorded, though!
