How wasteful are you with water?
« on: August 21, 2013, 11:01:56 AM »
I know most of the bore tends to be pretty forward thinking, but it seems like wasting water is something that crosses all boundaries.  I'm always amazed and appalled when I see how people will leave the faucet on while brushing teeth or doing something.  I try to be pretty conscious of my water use and avoid wasting it.  Not that I think my contribution really makes a dent.  I just fucking feel awful letting it run for no reason.

Water isn't scarce here and obsessing about not leaving the faucet on make little sense when you compare it to the water spent when flushing toilets and taking showers. If I lived in a place like Hong Kong I would be more careful about my wastage.

If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.

I try not to leave the faucet running when I don't have my hands or the tooth brush under it, but sometimes I forget. That's as far as it goes. I tend to forget time when I'm in the shower, so I probably spend more time there than I need.

I don't obsess over it and like I know my caution is irrational and has nothing to do with actual scarcity.  I just feel bad :lol  I guess because I grew up being told not to waste it.  My grandmother drove that shit into us and used to tell us about how she would spend all day climbing this big ass hill with buckets of water so that everyone in the family had enough water to bathe and drink and she could cook.  So it just became habit.

I also tend to hold my piss in a little longer sometimes because I tend to do full pisses every 30-60 minutes (Ironically I drink a shitload of water) and every damn flush is 1.6 gallons or something.

Edit: My mother's family (The Mexican side) also used to go crazy about water because we lived in the middle of the desert and they were poor (and trashy) as shit.  So you'd only flush with poop.  Pee would have to stay until 3 piss sessions or someone pooped.

I lived with them for a year  :'(

I mean the water gets recycled back into the system so you're not wasting it.

If I know leftovers are going to turn in a day or two and they don't fit a meal I'll just eat them even if I'm not hungry  :(  I hate throwing away food.

Long showers to get the paint off when I'm working, hand wash dishes, don't flush until the second pee

Fairly balanced, I guess

You can actually run out of fresh water locally. It's not a problem we're likely to have in Germany, but in more arid regions people pull more water out than is replenished through rainfall and other sources.

I run my sinks all the time just for that soothing sound. It doesn't matter around here, our water is pretty much infinite.

I piss off the back porch instead of using the toilet at night. College girls next door don't have a problem with it at all.

The water situation is definitely bad in parts of the world. This morning I read an article about the Gaza Strip and at the current rate they will run out of drinkable water in about three years. I live right next to a big fresh water lake and we won't run out of water. We do need to spend resources on cleaning it so I suppose it would be good to not be wasteful for that reason.

I do wash my hands an ungodly amount of times throughout the day.  That goes hand in hand with me pissing an ungodly amount of times throughout the day.

Go on Google maps sometime and scan through northern Canada. The amount of lakes and rivers is staggering.

Getting it to the US is also staggering.  I never waste water.  Can't with a water engineer for a wife.

Yikes, much respect.  That shit is complicated.

Used to read a blog by a woman in water management who said that when people found out what she did, they always either asked her to explain basically everything about her job in layman's terms in 5-10 minutes, or vaguely recalled some stuff from Cadillac Desert and tried to converse about it like they had equivalent expertise.

I've never paid for a water bill. It's always included everywhere I've been so I assume it's dirt cheap.
