Do you have a different persona on forums?
« on: August 11, 2006, 11:08:40 AM »
Just curious, I know that I'm a little shy irl, but on forums I pretty much say whatever is on my mind without caring what anyone thinks. Also I'm a lot more perverted and a bit of a bitch on the forums. I think that's why I've become addicted to forums, it let's me break out of my shell and express myself how I wish I really could.

Im actually pretty laid back, loolz. Most people who meet me dont really get the MAF connection, but I dont blame them.

Honestly MAF used to be a lot more angry. I suppose living well mitigates that a little.

white: we're all different.

I cuss more online, I dont feel my interactions with people online are 'real' enough to take seriously so I act like a loudmouth idiot.

One of the main reactions I have had from people I have met IRL from the INTARWEBZ is that im not that angry.

I'm an angel on forums such as this one, save for OA, compared to real life. What's funny is that I feel really at ease in english, so it's like an alternate reality, and so to have fun I'll state sensible things with just enough sillyness so that it'll look incredibly naive and insignificant, and yet make just enough sense to be taken seriously. What's entertaining with that kind of wit is that everyone who only takes everything at face value is totally confused, and only the clever ones truly get it.

Real life is full of thoughtless idiots who constantly judge and put their filthy groins where it doesn't belong, and make light of serious matters. I have no respect or pity for them, and no problem to vehemently vehiculate my opinion of them. Nothing feels better than to scare dumb assholes off.

I don't act hostilely when it isn't deserved, however it's the sole thing that most people respect and take any seriously. It's amazing how it makes a positive difference.

Am I the only person that curses as much, if not more in RL?  :-\

But overall, I'm probably a bit more shy and introverted in my everyday life. I used to be more extroverted before I got to college. I've changed a bit. I'm definitely more neurotic now.

I'm a comedian in real life seriously i'm a walking talking comedian. I crack jokes ever few minutes to complete strangers just about anywhere. I wasnt like this before and i think i have the internet to thank for that cause its helped me get over some social anxiety problems. I'm much more laid back irl than on here and I dont come off as a complete freak in real life like i probably do here.

I'm just a nice guy i'm not mean i do lots of hard work irl and through my foundation and hard work i've grown as a person irl. I still feel like a teenager when i'm online though.

Meh, I'm a pretty intoverted person - online and IRL.  I only really loosen up when I'm around people I'm comfortable with.  It's easier for me to express myself online, I do admit.  Something about typing up a bunch of words just doesn't create the kind of pressure you feel when talking to people face-to-face.  I honestly wouldn't have given Willco the time of day if he approached me IRL as opposed to online.   :lol

As per the topic at hand, I'm pretty much the same online as I am off -- though I guess I'm just a tad less talkative IRL.

But honestly, people always tell me I remind them of a certain late night television character -- hence my online handle.  ::)

Exactly the same here, and the same goes for my boyfriend. I'm pretty shy except at work, where I don't have a choice because I'm paid to be talkative and friendly.

I don't cuss much in real life unless I am extremely pissed off. Around my boyfriend I cuss more though, because I know he doesn't care.

I have different personalities online. On this board, as well as GAF and OA, I'm rather obnoxious. But on the first two boards I signed up for, I'm totally different. I use those boards to talk about more serious things, like politics (on Randy Rhode's message board  :lol).

In real life, I rather quiet. Everyone I know thinks I'm funny, but at the same time I remain laid back and somewhat aloof. I'm not sex obsessed or anything like that in real  life lol.

As for myself, I'm a big joker in real life; I love to laugh. :)  I don't think that comes across online much -- if at all -- really.  I'm also not as "preachy" IRL (I don't see myself as being that way, but I know I've been accused of it on the forums a number of times :D), and I only offer my advice or opinion when solicited or appropriate (e.g., if a political/social topic arises), and even then I'm far from pushy about it.  I suppose it's because these are discussion forums, and I feel that people should be prepared for divergent opinions simply due to the nature of the medium, whereas in real life, you can really rankle someone if you're too opinionated or insistent, and this can lead to confrontation; and if there's one thing I'm not, it's confrontational.  I'm not a pushover by any means -- I'll debate things civilly and in good faith where appropriate -- but I'm far from confrontational.

I don't swear at all IRL, again, unless it's around people I'm comfortable with.  Obviously Will is much more social than I.  I swear, he'd sooner be raped then eaten by a pack of rabies ridden wolves than to have to be alone for a day or two.  :duh

How is this different than GAF?

It's very different.
http://forums.therandirhodesshow.com/

GAF has seen many civil debates in which liberals and conservatives can go back and forth without much drama. Obviously GAF leans left, but you don't see anyone there comparing Republicans to Nazis (a very tired fallacy).

Without question, there is hypocricy on both boards. But the concentrated hatred that emits from the posters on RRMB is not comparable to anything happening at GAF. To be frank, I truly don't know how to explain these people. They have a deep founded hatred of the right, which is justified by their claims that the right are inherently evil. That's the funny thing about demonizing one's enemies. When you demonize someone, you cut off all bridges and turn the issue into a black/white affair. They're evil, we're good, end of story. Because of this, they can never agree with Bush on anything, for to do so would be to agree with evil. That's why guys like Ed Shultz, who is on the left but agrees with Bush every now and then, get hate mail daily from these far left people. And when you practice this, your vision is clouded.

The right hated on Clinton for 8 years, but they were still able to accomplish some things, mainly gaining congress in 1994. So far, the left has yet to accomplish anything in my eyes. The Democrat's chances in November are very good, but we'll see. But I'll say it again: the far left, which is quickly accepting the conspiracy theorists (like Alex Jones) who have been ignored for years, is going to become a problem for the Democrats. I think they'll be a negative just like the religous right is to Republicans right now.

I think it comes down to my analogy that you slightly poked fun at.

In real life we aren't allowed to implicate ourselves a lot (if at all) in most people's lives , save for our very close peers. If you show too much interest in people you barely know it's often viewed as inapropriate, because people are prude and don't trust strangers, and probably rightfully so.

However boards are meant to group diverse people and their interests together and let everyone participate at will -- in real life it's easy to escape from someone, however with boards everything that you discuss can be conversation fodder for anyone. So even for people with scruples it's allright to implicate yourself in everything that you desire and interact with everyone that seems interesting, whereas in real life there's tons of people you'd like to know more about, but for which their presence is ephemeral -- it makes you breed a lot of curious ideas and views that can't serve anything.

Like Nietzsche said, some people need to get rid of their ideas with writings like they need to go to the toilet, in real life because of what I've said it can be embarassing. So forums are a nice place to do something productive with your ideas and find an attentive ear. From what I've noticed though, people seen as preachy or holier than thou, are perceived as such simply because they're scrupulous and back all their claims articulately, so it's really not a bad thing.

Which "conservatives" are you talking about?  The literally one or two who haven't been banned yet, and haven't stopped posting seriously because they were tired of the endless harrassment?  Even their "conservatives" tend to be pretty liberal--I'm liberal by normal people's calculations, yet that hasn't kept me from being nearly-banned or had-to-be-talked-down-from-being-banned for expressing my opinions in exactly the same way as every other GAFfer...

True...

I still find some of the liberals on GAF to be very sharp; I can't say that about RRMB. Malek is pretty smart, and you better believe I'm working towards becomming as quick/deadly/witty as he is XD

meh, I was like that before, never sweared at all... and this is something my parents enforced

however at some point I stopped caring and holding back, now I swear like a madman... probably because I'm extremely easy to irritate and always grumpy as hell :lol

even if I always hated the Quebec swears in french, that's those I use... it's stupid, but when swearing your goal is to shock, so you use common words that come instantly to you, words that are sure to unnerve those around you and attack their dogmas

I'm not flamboyant in real life.  I'm very assertive and confrontational in real life.  I have pretty strong opinions on things.  Online, I just don't care.  I'm pretty much a polar opposite of my true self online.

I'm reserved and quiet in person, but if the conversation interests me then I talk a lot more.  The only differeince online is that I can selectively find conversations worth partaking in.

I actually don't talk a lot about videogames in person, because of the weirdos associated with it I know online. I'm worried that they will be like what cloudwalking experienced and freak out in a squealish way.  Plus, most of the time its people who know a lot less of whats going on trying to discuss it.
