Spotify has been ruined
« on: August 28, 2013, 11:50:40 AM »
A once great service has been ruined for me by a very odd decision.

Spotify has removed the Whats New tab that kept me as a dinosaur supplied with fresh music. Now all i get is stupid suggestions like WHY DONT U LISTEN TO 2PAC? Oh what a great idea spotify, tell me more!

Apparently this is some fucked up beta since my fiancee still has whats new. Horrible, horrible idea Spotify.

If you have a Last.fm account you can link it and then use that for recommendations instead. From within Spotify, I mean. They have an extension/app or whatever they call it.

Dunno, I only have a dumb phone. I imagine it will if the mobile version let's you install apps. Check for a menu option along those lines.

Why? I don't have a PC to pirate shit, so Spotify is pretty great to have.

Anyways, that sucks but I never really noticed that What's New tab. I use Discover a lot, though.

Nah. Their selection has been superior from my experience. I don't have to download a program on my PC and the mobile app is much better. Also the ability to upload your music to their cloud is FAR and away superior than Spotify's horrible method.

They used to run a great playlist with new album releases, but that hasn't been updated in forever. If you want to listen to niche music then Grooveshark might be the best choice.

What's the pricing model for Google Music? I don't think it's available here.

I just load up youtube and listen to tracks.

Some labels upload entire CDs

I am pretty specific in what I listen to, though

Between Spotify, Soundcloud and iTunes I'm pretty much covered without having to own a computer or pirate anything. Feels good.  :obama

A lot of the shit im into is free mixtapes, mixes and shit from soundcloud or bandcamp that is free. Spotify only has paid albums..

True, but it's not like you're not forced to use Spotify exclusively. You can't get everything in one place (except for PirateBay...), so pretty much any real music fan's gonna have to use a few different programs/websites.

This is also true, but I don't feel that Spotify is the best for recommendations. Like Rufus said above, Lastfm is better for that purpose (flabby and sick) but I didnt know about crosslinking it to spotify. Think I'll do that now..

Does Last.FM allow you to create playlists? That's my big thing. I might give Rdio a shot soon, but it's a little more expensive.

Google music is better than Spotify if you only listen to American music. I can listen to niche shit like Buscemi on Spotify because Spotify has European roots, and as such, has a great selection of American and European music. Also, I prefer albums over mix tapes and mixes and I can play my own playlists. Making fun of people who use spotify is distinguished mentally-challenged.

Also, Fistful only listens to metal. In my experience spotify easily has better selection of jazz, rap, country, and soul. But it is missing a lot of bit of rnb, and rock. That's where other programs come in.

I haven't had the NEED to pirate music in almost two years since getting Spotify premium. The only albums I've pirated have been RAM and MBV and that's cuz I had to listen to them immediately.

More than anything though, lastfm is the best for telling who is on tour with bands you like.

I don't think so, but I only use it for recommendations. It's also neat if you're into a bit of data porn, because it tracks what you're listening to (some players have built in functionality for that, or offer plugins). They do have Pandora-like radio functionality, but I haven't used it enough to know how it stacks up.

What's New still exists in the iPad app but I'm sure it's going to be phased out soon. I have I admit that I relied on it for new releases when I first subscribed, but I recently noticed an increasing use of Discovery simply because the recommendations are slightly more accurate and in tune with what I usually look for.

I'm not sure how many Spotify apps exist there, but there's a good variety that can replace something as simple as the What's New section, so that could have something to do with it.

In the end you were really exposed to whatever advertisers have paid for. People who honestly think every recommendation or radio mix has been tailored to their tastes are simple naive, IMO.

Ok google music seems cool, but no iOS app so it's a no go.

I thought the selection of music on Spotify was great value for 10 euro, I def got my moneys worth listening to old school hip hop :rock
