Oz was great but he was no where near the strongest force on Buffy.  I'd say the show started being meh when a) Joss moved primarily over to Angel and b) Anthony Head became a guest star.

It definitely did seem like Angel became a real distraction and he let his b-tier cowriters write more and more of the show.

I will say that s6 was very well focused and largely succeeded at what it wanted to accomplish (putting all the characters through a meat grinder.) I enjoyed it but I understand people not liking where it took the characters. I really loved the finale, too. s7 was all over the place though. Joss really should have buckled down on it.

Season 6 was terrible save for a few episodes.  Magic addiction, ruining Anya, Giles gone, Buffy emo...blugh.  Season 5 was the best post-high school season by far, sans Dawn.  My rankings:

3 > 2 > 5 > 1 > 7 > 4 > 6

7 had Conversations With Dead People, which I think is the best episode of Buffy since The Body.  Plus the finale was mostly excellent.

The finale does not hold up whatsoever. Literally 15 minutes of fighting in one spot after an entire season of buildup, dusting Ubervamps like it's nothing when the first one almost killed Buffy (for the third time.) I like the message but it was handled awfully. At least Spike went out like a boss.

8 is about on par with 7 if I had to rank it.

Honestly the only season I can't stand is 4. Had two good eps that people like to prop up (but one of them was basically a lead-in to s5 anyways.) Riley = sucked, Parker drama = mega suck, "Adam" = , "Let's combine all our powers like Captain Planet!" = , the Initiative sucked, brought back Harmony, and Buffy's wavy hair = UGGO.

I watched Buffy during it's original TV run and I've caught random episodes on cable since then. I'm still fond of the high school seasons (as I was in high school at the same time the characters were), but the show overall really hasn't aged well.

I love Buffy (my ranking is 3>5>2>4>1>6>7 for the record) and Firefly/Serenity and even like Dollhouse a bit but I'm just now going through Angel for the first time. Don't know why I never got around to it before now, I've seen most Buffy episodes countless times (and miscellaneous Angel episodes but never the whole thing) and although I never loved I never really minded Angel/Cordy/Wes. Halfway through season 2 and it's starting to get pretty great. Season 1 was entertaining but nothing special - I wasn't a fan of the mostly uninspired monster of the week stuff that I never found very gripping. Season 2 is a lot better though - having a stronger overarching plot with Darla helped a lot and I always had a bit of a soft spot for Dru. Adding Gunn to the main cast was a good move too, I do like the huge casts Whedon puts together.

So yeah Buffy and Angel are pretty good.

Dollhouse IS the best show. it packs about a season's worth of Jossy goodness into every 3-4 episodes (meaning the first 4 episodes are the Buffy S1 equivalent)

S1 True End is probably in my top one TV moments ever

Finished #1-4 of Buffy s9. Man I like the more realistic setting but the writing/characters don't feel like Buffy at all. The opening of s8 was far, far stronger in comparison (although that should be no surprise, as Joss wrote The Long Way Home pretty much by himself.)
