Vita TV is half the price of the Vita, but doesn't include controller or memory card.

Works with dual shock 3, plays PS1, PSP, and Vita games.  And hooks with PS4 to use Dual shock 4, it seems.

theoretically you can hook that up to another TV and stream PS4 games to it (restricted to vita's res, probably). nvm, that's actually a touted feature.

$100 (w/o the controller)

Can't play all Vita games since it doesn't have a touch screen.

PS Vita tv thing is kind of neat.

Single player/Co-op Phantasy Star game by Tri Ace? Thats also awesome. Vita's got some stuff.

Actually this conference had a lot of cool things. Not huge great things, but plenty of "hey ok cool" things.

Sony is doing pretty awesome honestly.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol At the Sony fanboys on GAF who think Vita TV is 'huge'. It won't sell a thing. I'd be surprised if it sells over 20K in its first NPD. I mean, we've had both Apple and Google (Ouya too lol) spectacularly fail in this arena and they've both pushed and put a million times more effort into Google and Apple TV than Sony ever have with the Vita, we've even still got the majority of Sony studios unwilling to touch the Vita with a bargepole. This thing has no reason to exist and won't change a single person's mind about the Vita platform who wasn't sold on it already.

Man, I can't wait for the NPD tears when this thing is outsold 50x by the 2DS.

I think this new push - the new Vita SKU and this - is an attempt to get more development. A $100 media and gaming playstation box is a really good idea, but I agree that anchoring it to the Vita eco-system could make it kind of stillborn...

the size / aesthetic / price is all good though. Almost so good it could detrimentally affect their other products if it caught on. I am much more prepared to part with this kind of money and play the good games I know Vita has, than part with £400-500 this Christmas on a next-gen machine. Hopefully its not too hard to convert games / rip out all the touch/back screen stuff and most of the best games are available immediately.

I'm taking it that it uses Sony's distinguished mentally-challenged proprietary Vita memory cards?

I can very confidently state that you're pretty much alone there. There won't be a single person considering a Vita over a PS4/XB1 this holiday. Also, the PS4 and XB1 lineup just for this holiday is better and more attractive to the mainsteam consumer than the complete Vita library is.

Yes, it still uses the hilariously priced Vita memory cards.

AFAIK its still Japan only this year, so it wouldn't be going up against PS4/X1 hype anyway, but once those launch windows are out of the way, I think this is an attractive thing if they can back it up with games.

the Vita memory card thing is a dealbreaker for me anyway atm.

edit: I don't agree with Sony fans on GAF saying its gonna mow everything down, but I don't think its a bad idea either.

Vita TV is fun news to wake up to. I'm definitely down for one. Hopefully this means the Vita will get all the major media apps its missing (which is everything but netflix)

I wonder how saves will work. I don't have PS+ and no real desire to get it but I don't want to plug my vita into this to transfer saves :-\

I was kind of waiting for a 2nd gen Vita to jump in but no way would I want to give up OLED.  I guess the 1st gen units might drop in price so I could get one of those, but I'll admit that I'm interested in the Vita TV.

Not being able to use the Vita for TV remote play or as a controller does seem kind of stupid.

It is pretty dumb that the Vita TV isn't going to play all Vita games though- at least the 2DS plays everything.

For the record - deeply Don't Give A Shit about the new Vita model

Definitely- it seems like a downgrade with the OLED screen removal, too.  Really disappointed with the lack of TV out and especially the pathetic amount of built-in memory.  1GB...lmao.   :lol ::)

The problem with the Vita TV is that it's not really a $99 device.  You need a controller and you need a memory card for it.  That $150 bundle they have is only $50 less than the 12 GB PS3 model.

pretty sure the -actual- market for this that all 341 people have a controller and a memory card already ;)

Actually I can't think of any Vita game right now that I'd want to record video footage of, so I'll probably hold off until then. /notavitardiswear :-[

Yes it does seem deceptively cheap considering the controller + card needed to play Vita games on it.

Apparently it will (along with giving it DS4 Support via firmware update)

Quote
UPDATE: We’ve been sent a few more details on the system from Sony.
•There will be a system software update to patch in DualShock 4 support.
•It can connect to other PS Vitas via ad hoc mode.
•Two DualShock 3 controllers can be paired to the system, allowing for playing PS1 titles.
•PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.
•Will support “nasne”, a networked recorder and media storage device.

also

Quote
You are able to use touch controls with PS Vita TV after all, although it doesn’t sound like the most intuitive or natural of systems. Instead of flicking or tapping as you would on the Vita screen, you press L3 or R3 to activate a pointer, which can then be moved around.

This will sell well among the following groups: existing vita owners who no longer care about dat OLDED, future PS4 owners who want laggy PS4 gameplay on a secondary TV, people who in 2013 don't already have a box that steams netflix, and gamers who've been playing vidya on a console that's 400 gflop for nearly a decade who now want to play vidya on one that's 40 GFLOPs.

Can you name one reason anyone who previously was not interested in Vita would now be? It's not like Vita TV is really any cheaper than the real Vita since you need to spend $150 to actually play some games. As well as that, tonnes of Vita games are unplayable on the thing and the Vita is hardly drowning in games.
