Knack looks the same beyond different lighting... also the "bullshot" screens are blurry.

The blurriness made it look more cinematic!

Deep Down looks like it could be fun. It's Demon's Souls MMO. Knack is probably decent if you're into Ratchet & Clank.

It's advertising, made at various stages of production. We're not going to get any decent footage until close to release and when we do whatever visual qualities they do have are going to get a video compression downgrade.

I think Knack looks heaps better in the reality shots

I'm with Borys on that one...  sick of reveals and trailers that don't show any actual gameplay. I expect a gameplay camera and maybe even a HUD. If you're just showing me cross fades of dragons and unrealistically playable camera angles, I don't give a shit.

It's advertising, sure, but I just find it insulting. And embarrassing when people drool over it.

Meh.

YES, BORYS. IT'S NOT REAL.

Games go through changes to the gameplay design, animation, framerate tuning, UI elements, camera behavior, etc. right up until they're submitted to the publisher. These "bullshots" and fauxtage are frequently the results of internally commissioned "target image quality" or otherwise inspirational / aspirational renders.

If it's good enough to show the dev team and publishers where they're expecting to end up, and getting them excited about it, hopefully it's good enough for the consumers too.

On the other hand, we've seen nothing but entitled contempt and loudmouthed ignorance whenever a dev shows their actual WIP to the world outside, which can result in marketing/sales/publisher panic, which can sometimes result in drastic and catastrophic changes to the game, simply because a bunch of anonymous Internet dimwits (who were likely to wait for the $20 price drop) got their rage boners in a line and decided to march.

That's a badly compressed image. Even the text is low quality. Driveclub's graphics isn't blowing me away, but it does improve some things. The environments are much more detailed compared to games like Gran Turismo 5/6 and it has nice lighting and reflections.

yeah, it's not particularly striking.  Driveclub, Forza, and that Need for Speed game all look good but it's hard to make that jump with car games.  Driveclub was most impressive in the latest video and I think it's more to do with the aesthetic sensibilities than rah-rah next gen tech.  Same reason why I prefer PGR3/4's look to Gran Turismo, Forza, or other betterer contemporary racers;  Bizarre knew how to make a classy looking car game.

To me, mind you i haven't played many recent driving games, GT is still the only series that got the visuals right and it all comes down to lighting. looking at that video, it looks great, but it still looks like video game lighting.

the main difference between the old and new footage is the low light. CGI always looks better at night, what with all the crushed blacks smudging out any imperfections and high contrast specular lighting.

if was on sony's fauxtage marketing team, i'd get ensure all footage was taken at night. GIF hounds don't give a shit about why it looks good as long as they can spam it in a console war thread.

I think Wipeout is the only racer last gen to WOW me.

I have to say the new Mario Kart on Wii U looks nice too, but that's purely the design.

Motorstorm was pretty sick in some places. Burnout would have wowed if Criterion hadn't been so bloody incredible on Xbox. But those games all have in common that they weren't really pushing realism as the biggest selling feature. Burnout lathered on the fx which is the right way to go with videogame racers since you lose so much real feedback.

It did?

well, not outsold the living fuck, but it did outsell them both handily, at least with the numbers available.

demon's souls sold about 650k~ between NA and JP, with 2/3 of that being in NA
dark souls sold about 700k~ between NA and JP, about half and half
dragon's dogma sold about 800k~ between NA and JP, with 2/3 of that being in JP, plus another few hundred k of the expansion.

souls is a big critical/fan success, and demon's was a huge sales success for a company atlus's size, and they sell very well for what they are, to be sure.  but, like uncharted, people seem to think that they sell a hell of a lot better than they actually do.  i can pretty much guarantee capcom wasn't sitting their rubbing there hands together at the prospects of selling seven hundred k.... they can do that pretty much in their sleep.

edit: you saw nooooooo typos
Could've sworn Dark Souls cracked 2m units earlier this year. Are you talking about NA and JP only?
