A gazillion boards, for like every topic ever. I just regged there today and I don't know where to start. Also, wtf you have to pay to have an avatar? Double wtf: you have to pay to search? Microtransactions have hit forums!

It seems like an alright board, but much much too big to fully enjoy. Anyone else have an SA account?

Big boards like Something Awful make me appreciate small ones like Evilbore a lot more.

You don't have to, but they're basic board features like the ability to search and have an avatar. In order to search and send pms you have to upgrade to a platinum account.

You can also spend money to change someone else's tag, and stuff like that.

I don't know if the whole "we have a huge forum to run!" excuse can be used here. I mean...not allowing people basic features like avatars...I don't know.

You pay a fee of 10 dollars to post

You can also pay an extra 10 (or is it 5?) for a PLATINUM account that removes the already non-intrusive ads and gives access to the forum archives.

As long as you don't get your ass plutoed, you don't have to pay ever again.

It's worth the tenner just to read, in my opinion. At any given time there's something hilarious or interesting going on. The forum is pretty strictly moderated and has a ton of arbitrary rules, so you have to lurk for a while before posting.

At any given time, a few of the forums are public for browsing, I believe.

I am Private Southbound. My name got changed during a particularly nerdy debate about the quality of Star Trek V. And then it got changed again during a particularly gay and nerdy debate about what was considered canon in the mythos of the Candyland universe.

There are also other things you can pay for. Like having someone's name and tag changed and shit, or paying for an ad banner.

Oh it is totally a cash grab and I don't think they'd even deny it. You have to pay to get unbanned. The quality of the forums is so good though. I rarely post there (I fins it tough to keep posting up on more than a few forums), but it's awesome to read.

Yeah, that gaming forum is pretty damned awesome. It does a good mix of new shit and old shit, with a lot of PC gamers there, too.

I like GBS, Games, Ask/Tell, Serious Hardware/Software Crap, The Book Barn, Cinema Discusso, and if I'm bored, the endlessly hilarious archives.

If I'm ever bored, I know I can usually easily kill a couple hours at SA.

SA is pretty much one of the most entertaining forum on the internet. The GBS section is always entertaining, the debate subforum has actual quality debates going on, and the movies section has lots of people who actually know about movies. The only problem is that it's soo gigantic, a lot of people just come and go and you rarely see the same posters twice.

The no-bullshit administration is also incredible; any regular board of that size would have gotten out of control pretty quickly (just like it was in its infancy), but the admins and mods are pretty hardcore about their jobs and just dont fuck around.

Possibly, but the extremely harsh moderation keeps the SA posters from spewing OA-level stupidity. The same harsh moderation also ensures that posters try to make quality posts, though replies to posts are a mixed bag.

Like I said, I don't really frequent there, I just go there when I have some time to kill. I check out the hilarious and interesting threads that have accrued over the past few days and then I leave. I very rarely post. The moderation is much too strict for my tastes, though I won't deny its bred a decent community.

Shuri nailed one of the things I dislike, and another reason why I don't post there much: It seems like the regulars come and go and change on a regular basis, so it's hard to get a real sense of anyone's identity like there is here or at GAF or OA. The threads are still quality, but it never seems like you get to know the posters.

That's something I figured, but it seems that if you stick to a specific board you get known there. At least that's what one of my friends says.
