This game

It packs a challenge, one that feels masochistic at times, yet it still feels fair and not as trollish as La Mulana's puzzles. Discovering a new enemy type, trap, items, or secret for the first time make me squeal like a bitch.

I wonder how it flows and co-op though, and whether there are levels beyond 1-3.

The levels can be a bitch, but then you get some godly items

it gets to your head and you become reckless and then you die like a bitch.

Haven't beat it yet. Still trying to wrap my mind around the traps and enemies because holy crap does it take some time to process all the craze!

Unfortunately I never maxed out the cheevs. They are some of the hardest I've ever attempted.

My pain and anguish is documented on the old Spelunky |OT|, but I may as well write it again! I need to join a support group due to this shit.

Basically I spent around 15 hours over 2 days going for the speedrun cheev. I got up to Olmec (the boss) around 6-7 times, and choked EVERY TIME. One time I actually killed him and climbed out of the hole, exit door was in sight. I had it. Then a scorpion jumped at me from off the screen. I only had one health left, so I died, my time was 5:30, which would have been #5 on the leaderboard at that time. I was howling and screaming, literally. I was punching my sofa like crazy. It hurt so much :'(

I might as well just start playing the game again. It really is GOTY 2012. I'll get those damn cheevs eventually

You playing on Vita? Does that come with the extra characters? I bought the DLC on Xbox, it's worth it for the disgusting viking loincloth guy

It's a cross buy so I get both PS3 and Vita versions. I don't think it supports cross-save otherwise I would continued playing it on the Vita. And I'm not quite sure about the extras, but it feels like it came with a few bonus characters, including 3 damsels, not sure if that was standard though.

okay so the PS3/Vita/Steam versions are identical, content/character wise, excepting that it seems that only the PC (I guess) version has the daily challenge (which is awesome).

Everyday, everybody gets one chance to play the exact same and daily refreshed map set, highest score (not furthest progress) ranks best, this of course changes the game radically, as you're more concerned with hoarding wealth then necessarily advancing. Ordinarily I tend to avoid grabbing the idol (too risky, can't piss off the shopkeeper with a stray boulder), but here, well, I'mma gonna need that scratch, right now please.

I also realized that it automatically and seamlessly supports cross-save. So I can jump between the PS3 and Vita version with zero hassles.

Aww, that sounds actually awesome. I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up the PC version at some point in the future.

I never even made it to the City of Gold. It's crazy how they put so much effort into creating super secret content that only like 0.01% of players will have the testicular fortitude to access.

Oh man finally beat it after playing non stop all break. Took me 498 tries/deaths to do it.

I had a perfect set up to try a city of gold/hell run too, but I wanted to at least beat the game first. Now I'm not sure I'll ever have this set up again.

I still play it fairly regularly. I still struggle with Olmec if I don't have enough bombs and have to use his stomp to break away the floor, also hell is still really challenging so that's nice. I played a bit yesterday and made it to hell without any bombs which was real cool because it forced me into a bunch of bullshit platforming sequences, dodging balls on chains and lava pits and all sorts of fucked up nonsense. Made it to 5-3 before dying, had me hella stoked.

I have to get back to this. I've gotten to the Ice Caves a couple of times, so I don't have the shortcut to it. I've been distracted by Rogue Legacy, which at least gives a feeling of progression. Once I beat that (probably soon), I'll most likely jump back into this.

I kinda love when the game fucks you over on something really obscure. Like on my last no-gold run I jumped on the head of a Tiki man who was holding a torch, but he was standing in front of one of those stationary torches that, when lit, spawn like 300 gold.

yeah, I don't mind but I would've liked a death cam to see why I died. I had one 20+ minute run with a lot of health, the jetpack, tons of bombs, and then something happened in the ice caves where my guy was unconscious and falling off the stage. No clue why that happened.

I've done the opposite. I started with Rogue Legacy, switched to Spelunky and have been enjoying it a lot more. Sometimes Rogue Legacy feels like it expects you to grind.

This game is still the shit. They recently updated them on Vita/PS3, now they're better optimized and less buggy (e.g. Vita's version runs at solid 60fps). Unlocking the shortcuts was also my main objective, however I've hit a wall with the requirement to bring the golden key from first cave to the ice cave.

I've never fucked with the shortcuts because they're more of a disadvantage than an advantage. You're going to have a way harder time with the game if you skip all the gold/items in the mines.

That's true, starting from the beginning and getting a nice selection of upgrades when the going is not as tough is part of how the game is balanced. But the shortcut requirements pose as a nice set of side-objectives that comes with its own fun challenge.

yeah, it's a nice mini-challenge. and it's nice to 'understand' the levels before going for a full run. I died seconds after I entered the temple the last two times because I didn't know what to expect.

ugh i had a great run going. got a jet pack from the first crate on 1-1. made it to the city of gold with 8 hearts and like 50 bombs. had my route planned to get me from the book to the exit. got hit by something stupid which made me fall between two tikis. no way out. fuck damit

I tried that for a while on 360 but could barely get to the Temple at all. Put it down for a year. Got it on Vita and did it within like 100 lives of turning the game on.

The shortcuts are good just to familiarize yourself with the traps in the later areas.

Original with a cheap USB adapter. Works great. Sometimes I'm unsure if there's a tiny bit of delay, but that might be imagination from reading to much about emulation problems or just that my controllers are a bit worn out.

If there's additional input latency it probably comes from the adapter. There's a tool to test it, but I forget what it was called. If MarkMan (the fight stick crazy) from GAF still has his Tekken fansite it's probably on there. Quick googling reveals mostly display latency tools, but it has to be out there somewhere...

high scoring involves waiting for the ghost and getting it to float over the various gems in the levels which turns them into diamonds. It's kinda grindy, lame and notfun imo.
