Therapists and Sleeping Pills: A realization of what I may need.
« on: September 16, 2013, 07:05:08 AM »
So I'm going to do it. Tomorrow I'm going to get a therapist.

It's been a long time coming, it's been achingly clear how much I actually do need someone to talk to. It's made me feel better in the past whenever good friends would listen, but I rather not burden people with my shit. I've come to realize that I don't have depression nor am I bi polar like previously and idiotically self diagnosed. I do know that something isn't quite right and I aim to fix it somehow. My fluctuating interest has reached a point where I actually need to be focused and not deal with sudden disinterest. Which has plagued me in almost everything important in my life, and has filled me with regrets that creep back into my mind every now and again. So I'm going to get the help I sorely needed for the past 5 years.

My clinical on and off insomnia has been acting up something fierce lately. Strangely upping my productivity levels. Although, I know it won't last from past experience. I was prescribed Ambien many moons ago but all it did was make me too tired when I did wake up to do anything. Maybe something a bit weaker could work wonders, I don't know. I have quite the disdain for pills. I need to put that aside to see if there's anything that can help that loathed aspect of my life that I took much pride in when I was younger.

Just felt like posting this somewhere. After seeing fistful post a thread and actually go through with it I thought I'd do the same in need of a group to call me an idiot or a bullshitter if I end up backing out. More motivation are the words I'm looking for, methinks. I'll get to it as soon as I'm done with classes.

First step is the hardest, well done for taking it.

Brave man to take the step, congrats.

We men would rather bury ourselves in booze and whatnot then face the facts sometimes.

Therapy can be awesome if you have a good therapist; sometimes all you really need is someone to talk to that's not actively involved in your life, weird as that sounds.  Good luck, man.

Yep, having someone objective to talk about stupid stuff is awesome.

Glad to hear you've made this step bro. You'll be fine, you're a strong guy but anyone dealing with what you've been dealing with would need some help. Nothing wrong with that breh.

Good luck with the therapist. I want to you to be guarded with them, but don't be too skeptical and try to enjoy it, the talking process I mean. Sometimes just talking it out helps as has been said. But sometimes you get a therapist who is just flat out wrong in their methodology and suggestions. So again, tread lightly. But I think having a therapist should be something to look forward to. Last year when I was doing therapy it was the best thing going in my life at the time.

Just have a positive attitude and you'll make it. Good job taking the step to get help and you'll always have friends here if you do want to talk it out.

Melatonin can fuck with you pretty bad if you're depressed.  Don't do it.

Seriously look into that melatonin supp. Works just fine. I used it to regulate my sleep in college because I was on stim meds for ADHD.

I'd avoid all kinds of mental meds if you can. It's like 50-50 will they fuck you up or possibly help

From one Shawarma to another: squeeze everything you can get out of that glorious full-coverage insurance. Find a good in-network therapist, and go to town! I have one for every topic I feel like discussing.

I have a question: so how do you find one?  Do you just look at which ones are covered under your insurance?  Since you say you have different therapists, I didn't know.

Just curious.  I don't need one now but I may look for one in the future.

I started with asking my friends, or at least the ones I trust are getting good therapy or have done so in the past (you can usually tell by how much they use therapy-speak), and they'd refer me to their current or previous therapists. I give those a call and ask if they're in Aetna's network. They usually tell me they're in more often than out-- which tells me this company has a good amount of contracts with health providers, so I'm in luck. As you can tell, I'm clueless as far as US insurance companies go.

If they turn out to be good I stick with them, if not or if I want to see others for other reasons, I'll sometimes ask them to refer me to someone else straight up. For instance, my current therapist referred me to a good Pakistani doctor because he'd relate and understand where I'm coming from better on some issues. I'm not sure if that's feasible for everyone, but with $0 co-pay I'd be crazy not to.

I was just about to recommend Imovane if you were still looking for a sleeping aid. Works for me pretty well with minimal side effects.

Melatonin supps. are probably the best, but I think you're only supposed to take them short-term because they'll fuck with your bodies own melatonin generation.

That shit has never worked for me. Neither has the "sleepy-time tea" stuff with herbs that are supposed to make you drowsy.

Anything that's specifically for sleep works for like 2 weeks tops for me. The only thing that helped my sleeping pattern long term was modafinil, and that was too expensive.
