For all the iOS games coming from Japanese developers, there still isn't a Super Robot Wars title. I've got SD Gundam G Generation Touch, but it's not the same.

Strange considering turn based strategy is a better fit on touch devices than action games.

Yeah, it is strange. SD Gundam G Gen works really well on the iPhone.

edit: And it's not working with iOS 7. Crap.

I'm down if and only if it has controller support.  Touch screen games are shit and will always be shit.  Now that controller support is in iOS 7, there's no excuses not to include it.

Yes it is odd when turn based games and touch devices fit together really well, which seems to be the genre most raged about.

Apple should have jumped on an official controller attachment earlier, though.

Rumbler, turn based rpgs are fucking dead - for the most part - and it's very likely this will be better than Shadowrun Returns so what's there to complain about?

If anything, more devs putting games I want on smartphones is a good thing because it gives me more games to play on those devices. More games to play is a good thing, isn't it?

yeah, it's a weird landscape to be in to be quite honest - i think there's a denial phase that some people fight against for varying lengths of time but , basically, if you can't find a game or 50 that you like on iOS then you're simply not trying.

That said - there's still -that thing- in the back of your head : it's lovely having cave shmups on the phone but the new projects coming direct to iOS , whilst it all makes sense financially and it's certainly better than these companies dying, is a reality that people just don't want to accept. Hands up - I struggle with it - i would rather see games on a platform with traditional controls on a game by game basis of course - some games work much better with touch of course, some don't.

But hey - controller support in iOS7 sounds like it could be great - though have to admit if my iphone 4S starts running like sh1t after upgrading and they fail to address that as per reports then i'm giving apple the finger.

Bug Princess 2 on iPad :bow2

I know the stalwarts whine about analog input making the games easier, but it feels fun and natural to play so ain't no harm imo.

well, the other factor is that -real- stalwarts have, at least, an X360 to play these games on and, for the real players, a supergun/arcade machine and the boards themselves.

You have to look at them for what they are : extremely good versions of cave games with alternate control schemes that are fun to play in their own right. Cave did a fantastic job on the iOS games,  really top notch stuff.

Again, the difficulty is that the shmup arm of Cave is pretty much dead with the departure of key staff and the traditional shmup market place is also not in the healthiest of states - it's great that they can pump out a few iOS games and fill up the coffers a bit but the lack of arcade/home -traditional- games still smarts for those invested in that side of the hobby.

The irony of the mobile situation is this:

people (like me) complained there was a lack of interesting or quality software enough to make me invested in the mobile environment.

big, big companies are starting to cater to that demo by releasing cool looking games. people still bitch.

damned if you do, damned if you don't.

But I think this is a good thing and I'm a historically loud cynic towards mobile games to the point where I fully plan on getting an ipad for christmas.

it's a whole new platform with a huge ecosystem of games - once you cast away the brainfart barrier to entry that gamers inadvertently throw up then it's a huge growing stream of funtime.

I would also like to add, just in case anyone notices, that the games like Farmville etc that showup on my profile are actually being played by my eldest son. Those sort of games aren't for me but he seems to love them.

I'd be fine with mobile gaming if I could just pay a flat fee for the game. Charge me $50, I don't care. I just hate IAP/play to win bullshit.

Case in point. SD Gundam G Generation Touch on the iPhone is 1,000 yen for the whole game. You don't need to pay anything else. The new SD Gundam game, G Generation Frontier, is "free" to play with an assload of IAP/play to win bullshit. If that's the future, I do not fucking want SRW on the iPhone.

And some devs have actually gone back and turned "flat-rate purchase" games into F2P monstrosities.

I don't begrudge any developer on the brink of death for releasing games on iOS (although they sure as hell better make an Android version too. :heh)

It might annoy me when it's a series I'm a fan of, because the games I'm a fan of would be difficult to control well using only touch (MH, Mario, Zelda.)

Pokemans could make the transition fine, I suppose, but I'm perfectly happy with it being on Nintendo hardware for now.

I find that due to the fact most mobile game purchasers don't want to pay $1 for a game, the games on the platform tend to be very limited in scope compared to traditional console or handheld RPGs. Lots of reused content, IAP paywalls, extremely grindy gameplay. I prefer to pay a flat rate for a game and be done with it... stuff like All The Bravest with "cooldown" periods where you have to pay if you want to play right away is disgusting.

Oscar, you know my tastes by now. What games do you think I'd enjoy on Android (don't own an IPhone)? Aside from Chaos Rings and FF Dimensions :P

Certainly. I don't mind paying $90 to import console releases, but that market is dying faster than a mayfly with stage 4 cancer. I would much rather have ios releases than no releases, and with an unhealthy dose of optimism; there might be some fun new mechanics that evolve from the touch stuff. /hopesanddreams

the only games that suck with touch controls are 1. the rare ones that use a fake dpad and 2. the ones that have a 3d world and require you to move around, manipulate the cam, and interact with stuff all at the same time. console devs cant even get that right because no one can make a decent camera even in 2013. fortunately there are new creative solution being invented all the time, and there are lots of good games (like jrps!) that easily work around this.

you cant even make the budget/limited scope/recycled content argument anymore because theres lots of great devs putting out full-featured games now.

Rumbler you should have a more open mind and think more positive thoughts.

Aside from the fact that it's directed by the BoF guy, there wasn't much in that video that looked interesting to me. It had lots of fights and lots of cards. Looked like there was an overworld of some kind that was just a simple, static image. Movement looked linear [just forward and backward]. Even if the announced hardware was 3DS and Vita, I'd probably still be about at the same level of disinterest.

Actually, scratch that last line. If it was on 3DS and Vita, there'd actually be a decent chance of it being more like a traditional console JRPG.

With his kick starter future crumbling around him, what good thoughts are left?

I've always enjoyed ios games. Roughly from the beginning. I was a fairly big poster back in the relatively early days of ios gaming on GAF. I do it far less over here just because.

Yes, the best games on ios/android currently tend to be non-action focused games or games where quick precise twitch movements common to PC and console games are not focused on. And that will always probably be the case for people playing solely on phones on a phone screen. But I think tablets and eventually phone streaming technology to tv will of course change that. We already see the how the future will increasingly move that way now that ios will have controller support. It will be a slow adoption but as the technology rapidly increases it will catch on.

I guess my attitude as I've gotten older is more to see where new technology fits into my lifestyle rather than overly lamenting how things are changing. Because things are always going to be changing. That's life. It's the job of the older technology to maintain and establish their portion of the market so things are hopefully additive rather than just a replacement. Ios gaming has only added to my gaming lifestyle. Not lessened it.

And I'm also mad that the mobile platform hasn't spurred a revival of P&C adventure games. I mean, it's great that Simon the Sorcerer and The Last Express have popped up on Android recently, but those are just ports of 20-year-old PC games.

Why would it revive P&C? I enjoy the genre on the platform, but the small screen really does not do any justice.

A lot of them would probably get ported to PC, so it would be okay.

Playing Curse of Monkey Island on my tablet is cool, though.

The Cave is also coming to iOS, isn't it?

Is there a single decent iOS JRPG that isn't a port? And by "decent" I mean "longer than five hours" and "doesn't have a puzzle battle interface."

I'm perfectly fine with the idea of playing good games on my phone. It's just that native mobile games always seem to be developed with a minimum-resources, minimum-effort, maximum-monetization model so that nothing keeps my attention for longer than 15 minutes total. That, and I'm still not comfortable with touch screen controls for action. I mean, it works well enough for the Cave shooters and Raiden Legacy, but there's something about the transition to mobile that makes them feel like insubstantial, throwaway experiences. Which pretty much describes 99% of mobile games I've played.

The best, most long-lived iOS game I've played is still Game Dev Story (though I realize it's a port from JP featurephones). The best Android games I've played are Dungeon Diary and Pixel Dungeon.
