Gravity
« on: September 23, 2013, 12:50:24 PM »

Quote from: Entertainment Weekly
What's astonishing about the film is its hypnotic seamlessness - the way that the director, Alfonso Cuarón, using special effects (and 3D) with a nearly poetic simplicity and command, places us right up there in space along with the people on screen.

Quote from: Time Out
This isn't just the best-looking film of the year, it's one of the most awe-inspiring achievements in the history of special-effects cinema.

Quote from: Film.com
This is truly awesome.

Quote from: The Atlantic
A master class in fluid camerawork, bold, unfussy imagery and special effects that put most recent Hollywood blockbusters to shame.

Quote from: TIME Magazine
If the film past is dead, Gravity shows us the glory of cinema's future. It thrills on so many levels. And because Cuar‪ón is a movie visionary of the highest order, you truly can't beat the view.

8.8/10 average review. 94% positive with 36 reviews total.

two of the best films I saw this year both had rad elbow drops (The Worlds End and F&F6), I don't know how they'll fit in this movie, but I'm expecting great things out of it nonetheless.

I have friends whose opinions I trust implicitly on film quality that have seen this.

They have all said the same two things:

1) See this thing in the best 3D you possibly can; it's the best use of 3D in film to date.

2) Alfonso Cuaron is a fucking master... this is the final confirmation.

I'm counting down the days.

I love Children of Men but I'm kind of terrified to see this in a theater. :(

See it in a theater.  Seriously, the visual effects/3D are supposed to be next level shit.  People who work in the film industry have all said the same thing:  see it, and see it in the best 3D you possibly can.

Shiiiiiiiiiit! If I had to describe this movie with one word it would be "intense".  From beginning to end.  When I left I heard "on the edge of my seat" repeatedly. Its also absolutely beautiful and should be seen in Imax 3D.

Imax 3D is the way to see it bro. October 11th Captain Phillips will begin taking away theaters from Gravity and it will probably be gone in another week after that.  It's the definition of spectacle.  For reals.

do what you gotta do.  Maybe 3D just isn't for you.  There are definitely good uses of it out there.  If 3D interests you, this is a movie you don't want to miss in 3D

it does interest me on a conceptual level, i've tried the 1080p rift and it got my yayas going, but a flat projection into filtered glasses always feels like "huh, that's neat" distraction for 15 minutes before my brain recalibrates itself and then i spend the rest of the movie wishing i didn't have to watch it with dumb glasses on at crappy light levels.

i guess i need someone who i know has always had as equally wretched an experience to tell me that this is the first time they've ever enjoyed 3D, then i'll give it a fair shot.

I see.  Can't help you there.  I've enjoyed a few movies in 3D.  Avatar, Pacific Rim and this off the top of my head.  Others felt like a waste.  Most movies feel like they run out of ways to make the 3D interesting.

Same for me. Pacific Rim in imax 3D was amazing. Gonna have to convince my friends to see Gravity that way.

Best 3D movie I've ever seen.  All those space sequences were :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd

For the movie alone, I thought it was fucking great up until

Bullock gets into the Soyuz.  The movie then becomes this lame mix of spiritual fake-outs, existential crises leading to this unfounded and unnecessary "I'M THE ONE!  I'M GONNA DO IT!  YEAH!  NOTHING CAN STOP ME!"  Last thirty minutes of the movie are just smeared with cheese.

I thought the whole thing was pretty cheesy.  There's a lot of cliches.  Right from the beginning it's chock full of them.  A nervous rookie accompanied by an experienced veteran father figure on his last day on the job.  Oh and big surprise, he dies just before retirement.  Sacrifices himself no less!  The final act is definitely cheesy, but I don't think it's out of sync with the rest of the film.  Story was clearly an afterthought in this movie.

For those who aren't looking at the spoilers, go see it for the spectacle.  The story seems to be there just for the sake of coherence.  Take that as you will.

Excellent movie.  Don't have much to say except that you should probably see it (and I mostly agree with what Mupepe has already said).

Definitely think 3D is worth it.  That Hobbit 2 trailer played in front of this and the 3D looked pretty bad and for a moment I thought I got suckered into this 3D shit again.  A minute or two into the movie proper, I knew I made the right choice.

The trailer makes it sound like Clooney being Clooney in space. He doesn't sound particularly alarmed by what's happening, in fact he sounds calm as shit - just loud. IE...Clooney in space.

Do they find anyone else in space? Maybe other lost astronauts.

The visuals were absolutely incredible but the story and the acting were the hokiest thing ever. Remember that space scene in FF8 and how cornball that was? Take that and amplify it 100x. My gf was cracking up at some of the more "emotional" scenes...

but yeah, it's worth seeing on the big screen - couldn't imagine you'd get nearly the same effect watching at home.

Actually, this movie... with the perspective and some of the cheesy jokes... reminds me a lot of an amusement park ride in the beginning :P

As for minimalist space movies, did you guys like Moon?

Also back on the subject of Gravity:

was kinda hoping it would end with a strange leftfield twist... like Bullock gets back to Earth and the Russian missile launch was the catalyst for WWIII that wiped out most of the planet or something fucked up like that... hence why NASA wasn't really answering her.
