I think the most interesting thing about this is that it's an OS specifically designed around a TV rather than a traditional PC. I've wanted an HTPC-centric OS for a while now and if this actually works well in practice it could fill that niche better than Windows is doing.

Through the power of #SteamOS you'll soon be able to buy a bad computer to stream games from your good computer http://bit.ly/19tPzrh

lol Shark Johnson, Valve doesn't care about HL3. It's just a joke they teasingly allude to every so often without making any commitments, much like a wife who married for socioeconomic reasons.

Imagine that, Valve decided that the "environment best suited" to Steam is one it owns and controls fully.

In-home Streaming

You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!

It's a platform to play the limited Linux library natively, or stream your Windows PC (or Mac, running Windows) to.

That's not too bad if you can use it with a dongle and it effectively becomes a wireless HDMI device.

Source 2 is prolly gonna centered around making it as easy as possible to make games run natively in linux.

Just think of all those Valve employees, working hard on linux dev tools, not for a single second thinking about Half Life. :teehee

I suspect they are trying to expand their platform. Samsung using SteamOS for whatever feature set they want in their TVs, etc. It's centered around games at the moment, but Valve is probably interested in making something that is flexible enough to deal with whatevs be it streaming media or apps or whatever else that might emerge over time as a worthwhile feature to have built-in to a TV.

You can leave your desktop where it is and don't have to run an HDMI cable for comfy couch gaming. That's something, provided the latency is bearable. Good for those who care about it, I guess.

And this, I suppose.
Quote
In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases.

But who knows what that even means. I'm not expecting much.

Seems like a solution in search of a problem.

I think the Steambox itself with this os or this os installed in smart tv's is supposed to be the solution to the media/gaming set top box problem but I still feel unless the price is radically affordable they have very little chance of actually capturing a significant portion of the market. Like I've always said I still don't understand who the steam box is aimed at. Dedicated consoles have an established audience to try to use as a trojan horse. Apple is the ultimate trojan horse. Even smart Tv's are a new trojan horse. But the community that steam already serves seems squarely aimed at the desktop hardcore niche but profitable gaming audience. I don't see them being able to out maneuver the others.

I know it's been 10 years since it's release, but it took Valve a long-ass time to get Steam into shape. It would be a mistake to think this thing is going to be rock solid right from the start. Early adopters are going to be the beta testers.

I consider myself a PC gamer, but I have no desire to play in my living room. My lonely, little dark man cave with my screen 18 inches away from my face is kind of what I prefer.

I think the vast overwhelming majority of PC gamers are the same way and the casual types would even be far more reluctant to be using their PC on the TV if it remotely involves a keyboard or mouse. That's what tablets are for. I think all this big picture stuff is a lot of work to satisfy a very tiny percentage of the market but its their business.

Well. This could be good, but considering how much the client still sucks I have little faith that Valve can produce something competent enough for the mainstream.

Re: SteamOS

To be any good I'd think they'd have to be somewhat closed at least in terms of compatible hardware drivers / benchmarks, and preventing piracy and malicious attacks. In that sense I don't think they can avoid going against everything that Linux stands for.

Of course, I don't expect regular gamers would give a shit but Linus Torvalds and his friends are probably going to tear this thing a new asshole for essentially being what Valve would claim to be avoiding on Windows 8 machines.

If it's all open, fair enough, but all the linux gaming talk at recent events appears to me as hollow unless they continue to support other distros with a client as good as steamOS, otherwise they've just forked and hijacked it really. It's another Android in that respect - somebody commercializing in the space for a specific purpose.

I'm willing to be impressed by it, especially in terms of cost etc.

Even if that was the case, if the end goal is ostensibly a purely PC gaming focused OS....... why not?
Yeah I'm just hung up on the way they're framing this. It's probably just something they're thinking of a bit further down the road and. A Steambox/VR package make could jumping into VR a lot less intimidating for the curious.

I also have doubts about the UI... Big Picture is pretty nice but they've been mostly snoozing on Steam proper for awhile.
Maybe they're waiting for a big overhaul when the OS comes out but their supposed lack of corporate organization doesn't make me too confident. If everyone's hyped on SteamOS and DOTA, why work on that lame old and busted Steam client?

That said, console and streamer UIs aren't usually all that great anyway so it might not be a huge issue when it comes to being competitive with other TV-centric devices.
