I mean sure you could have 1080, but would it feel as finely tuned?

900p is the perfect balance between this gen and next gen.

Favorite next gen resolution is The Order's 1920x800.  Black bars.  2.40:1 ratio. It's not sub-1080p, it's FILMIC  :jawalrus

Can't wait for 1440x1080, 4:3, Vintage Hollywood resolution.

Devs prefer prettier pixels,diminishing returns,console userbase playing games on badly tuned/calibrated 720/1080 sets,some of them even playing at 4:3 Lager retro setting,etc...
