Terraria?
« on: October 06, 2013, 11:22:48 PM »
Did a search and saw no thread for this, so here we are.

I see the game is on sale on XBL this week, so I read up on it a little.

It sounds AWESOME! I really like Minecraft and this looks like the same sandbox fun with more of a game behind it.

Just wondering what the Bore consensus is? Praise or condemn?

It's good imo if you like those types of games. It's more "gamey" than Minecraft which is a good thing.

Yeah I liked Minecraft, but it definitely needed a little objective based play.

Stuff like:
- Hack the Creeper database
- investigate cause of zombies

Even Minecraft has moved on to stuff like Hexxitt

but yeah I'd prefer my sandbox games to have a little more sense of exploration and danger and reward. Terraria is better in that regard.

I poured a lot of hours into it on PC, till I lost time to play and then when I went back to it, they'd updated it and I wasn't a fan of the updates. My mega-buff pickaxe dug way slower than before. Also, the dude ran slower than he used it.
ok.

funny you should bring it up. I've been playing it a lot lately since the update. The Xbl version doesn't have the pc update of 1.2. The game was good before the update and is even better afterwards, there's just so much more now. It's totaly worth the price and it would be best played on a PC if you ask me. It doesn't take a master computer to play it. It's a lot of fun and it's more of an adventure than minecraft or spelunky. The objective is simple survive and you'll be rewarded, fail this and you will know pain.

I played it for 20-30 minutes and I'm not a fan. Being restricted to two dimensions makes it a lot less interesting compared to Minecraft. I might give Starbound a try though.

Starbound is a strange one. It's not being made by the same person and yet it's got the same artist. I am really curious to see what they do with gameplay.

I played a few hours of the PC version but couldn't get into it because I dislike 2D movement on the keyboard. I can't wait for the vita version though to give it another shot. I tried the tablet version over the weekend but didn't really like the controls in that one either

Terraria really lacks that "exploration" angle that makes Minecraft work so well, to say nothing of how the 2D perspective makes it feel confined and small.

I disagree. I know there are people who like the exploration bit of minecraft but without rewards and real escalation to back it up, it was always far more boring to me.

I played the shit out of Terraria up until the devs started listening to the Sperglords on their forums and jacked up the difficulty so much that even trying to do simple things became a chore.

Is that what happened to the game? Because I quit when I got to the deepest levels. The monsters were too fucking hard and spawned constantly.

It seemed like the best strategy was to keep 'turtling' in little rooms and slowly kill them individually. Blah.

The deeper monsters were always kinda tough, but in updates they boosted the damage given and taken for the upper level creatures as well, to the point it was taking 4-5 hits to kill even the little blue blobs you first encounter. Too grindy.

Started playing this last night.....

ihavenoideawhatimdoingdog.jpg

I built some rooms and a dude moved in, do buildings have to be made out of stone and/or wood to count? I built a dirt hut out of dirt blocks and walls, and no one moved in.

I'll have to read a beginners primer I think.

Yea, it was confusing for me too. I'm pretty sure the walls had to all be at least wood. Then you needed a table, a chair, a torch and a door.

Yeah, the Xbox version has a tutorial which explains the table and chair etc. stuff, and tells you to make a building out of wood or stone, I guess that implies that dirt is no good... eh I tired anyway. At least I got some shelter next to a good mining spot now.

It's got the mindless resource collecting and building shit of Minecraft, plus actual progression and loot and dungeons and shit. Why does loot make my penis become the big penis?

Game is effing incredible anyhow, having a world map is :O I found my way to the Jungle biome and got boned. I probably sohulda gone for small world size, this thing is massive

I bought the game during the steam sales too. It's really fun to play, kind of new to me since most of what i play is call of duty.
