I don't play games on my toilet. Nor would I be able to get away with playing something as long and involved as DQ8 at work (open floorplan at the new job, I'm lucky I can sneak a few seconds to send out a few texts to people). I'm a crusty old relic who loves to get immersed in a long and gripping adventure, relaxing on my couch in front of a big-screen TV (and to a lesser extent, playing on my PC). I dealt with RPGs moving to handhelds but even that wasn't an ideal. There are games that make sense for phones, like where you can play a few minutes stopped at an extra-long traffic light... but not 100 hour long RPGs. I've also found grid-based movement annoying in the few touch RPGs I've played (of the 2D variety with only 4-way movement) too. And I hate the whole IAP whaling that goes with a lot of phone games.

Even if console RPGs completely dry up and this IAP whaling unambitious mobile RPG future comes to pass, I'll still have more than enough console games to play until either the mobile marketplace finally collapses upon itself or until companies finally start making more ambitious titles on the platform (so far out of what I've played, no original title has even come close to a mid-grade 90's console RPG)

How do you figure? (btw not to dwell but there aren't any big name techno DJs who wear silly hats. Unless you think deadmau5 is techno...) I gave my clear reasons why playing 100 hour long RPGs on a small phone screen with rigid touch-controls isn't for me (and luckily if I want to play any of the DQ games again I can play my console versions). If phone gaming appeals to you, that's nice and I'm glad you have a lot of games to play.

see, this is why i don't give you better answers.  "yes but, yes but, yes but, yes but".  a whole lot of excuses you've imagined up and whenever anyone strikes one down, you replace it with yet another imagined excuse.  i'd say enjoy your misery, but we both know you're going to break sooner or later, because you are an impotent addict, just like every other gamer.

You seem to think that I haven't played anything on phones and I'm just pulling these excuses out of thin air. I've played enough games on phones, whether they be free trials, F2P, or purchased games, to come up with reasons why I don't like most of them. There are a ton of people on GAF who hate handheld games, there are a ton of people on GAF who hate PC games, and they have their reasons for that I'm sure (probably just as stupid, if not more so, as you find my reasons)... but do you go and argue with them?

Also, you'd be surprised. I don't really have an addictive personality, and I don't think it would be that hard to quit following modern gaming completely given my lack of time (which is only gonna get shorter as I get older), lack of finances, and a backlog that could very well last me 30 years. Not to mention I highly doubt quality traditional console/PC games will dry up completely from either Japanese or Western devs.

The 3D FF games are a lot prettier on tablets than on the low-res NDS screen, but they still control horribly. Fortunately there are still plenty of games being released for PC, home consoles, and handhelds so I can ignore mediocre mobile games for another decade.

I'm going to regret this damning statement but, DQ8 is for casuals and DQ virgins. DQ8 was my first DQ, and I loved it. Then I went back - after playing the entire series. Its dungeons are terrible, it reuses entire storylines, alchemy pot sucks, battles are atrociously long in favor of classic DQ swiftness. DQ9 is objectively better than 8 in almost every single category, short of characters, and MAYBE story. And DQ has never been about characters, aside from VIII. DQ is about the world, the world and its vignettes are the characters these people crave.

If graphics and characters are your priority, sure, DQIX may be a step back!

IDK man DQ1-7 are pretty much unplayable in this day and age. They might have been decent in their time, but even back then there were much better RPGs around. The only redeeming features of the old DQs is their writing style and music, and DQ8 completely eclipses them in those areas and everything else.

DQ9 could have been fun if it wasn't for the lack of a challenge, character and decent graphics. 

DQ8 = Easily one of the best JRPGs ever imo

Past DQ's have a sense of character progression, DQ8 is just dumping points into stats. It's very basic and lacks the customization of past games, particularly 3 and 7. DQ8's battles are also slow as molasses, another x. The difficulty in DQ8 isn't really that high, so I have no idea why you'd think DQ8's challenge is fine.  I find DQ9 more challenging than 8, especially given how expensive armor is and how often you need to start a class at level 1. Past DQ's have much better dungeons and vignettes. DQ5 and arguably 4 have better writing than DQ8, I certainly felt more emotional towards 4 than 8. That's without mentioning 7 which has the best vignettes in the series, though the overall plot isn't as personal as 5's.

1-7 are completely playable.

Also DQ9 has the best graphics on the Nintendo ds. It's a beautiful game considering its limitations.

I find most people prefer 8 because of things like graphics and characters and voice acting. The characters are great, but the rest is pretty much extra stuffing.

I really like VIII, but almost every time someone says it's the best DQ it's from some superficial thing like graphics and you can kinda tell they don't like oldschool rpgs to begin with. or they're Playstation RPGers like Kagari

All DQ games are really basic though. I mean you get a handful of skills for each job in the old DQs and that's it. That's not more customization, it's just divided up into a bunch of jobs in a clunky job system. In DQ8 it is centralized on the four main characters, and is open for the player to mess around with right away.

DQ8 is definitely the most challenging in the series. One of the reasons battles were slow is due to how you can get your shit wrecked in a random encounter. Compared to DQ9/7/5/3 where I didn't die a single time it is like night and day in that aspect.

The plot/characters in the DQ franchise as a whole are extremely shallow and only stand out due to the light hearted writing style that always plays it straight. In that aspect DQ8 also dominates.

DQ is a superficial series. Isn't that the entire point? Without all its superficial charm it's just another one of the endless suck-ass RPGs from Japan.

And DQ9? Beautiful?
