Most overrated game of the generation?
« on: October 10, 2013, 03:26:22 PM »
Now that NEXT GEN is here, and games journalism has reached a new apex of hyperbole, what games have been hyped to shit, only to be turds?

My nominees:

Bioshock Infinite - pretty pictures and nice audio design cant save a middling shooter with no balance or thought put into gameplay and progression. It's like the people designing the game actually put no thought into how the product actually functions as interactive entertainment.

Hyperbolic review excerpt:
Quote
Bioshock Infinite is a visionary piece of entertainment where the gameplay, characters, art style and story all come together to make what undoubtedly will be considered one of the best games of this generation.

The Walking Dead - a point and click adventure with pointing and clicking, no adventure or puzzles. Just walking around talking to assholes. The games goal to goad you into "caring" for the characters is offensively transparent.

Hyperbolic review excerpt:
Quote
From the very beginning, The Walking Dead sinks its teeth in and never lets you go. It's a journey in the truest sense of the word, replete with tragedy, heartache, tension, fear, and even brief moments of catharsis

Bioshock Infinite/Last of Us. Both for me. Both good games. Neither at the level they were reviewed at.
Demon's/Dark Soul's. Won't really get into this too much other than to say that I'm in the minority here but that's how I feel. Shitty controls and faux difficulty but that's my opinion.
Unhcharted 3. Has a metacritic of 92.  God No.
Gears 3 and the franchise in general after the first one.

That is the epitome of overrated. Uncharted 2 was a legitimately good game, but 3 just felt uninspired, repetitive and flat out boring.

And nothing will ever top the IGN quote.

Quote from: IGN
When I rant about why Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is better than just about anything on the market -- about why I think it's my new favorite game of all time -- I don't talk about the firefights, the new ability to throw grenades back at enemies or collecting the game's 101 well-hidden treasures. I talk about the heart-wrenching section where Drake is by himself and completely lost. He's on his last legs, he's desperate, and I'm right there with him. I'm pushing him through the journey at hand and it's clear that it's a game, but as he stumbles, seeks shelter and loses hope, my heart breaks.

That's good but all-time champion is still Greg Orlando's Majora's Mask review for Daily Radar:

Quote
To live life is to don a mask each and every day. Our true selves are seldom exposed to the world at large; to show everything to the people we must share our existences with would be to risk the ultimate rejection. We are what we think others want to see, and we live our lives doing this each and every day until it's impossible to tell where the mask ends and we begin. A mere decoration becomes a metaphor for humanity's hard time on planet Earth. We are the masks we wear.

Fuck publications, when it comes to gamers Dark Souls is easily the answer. Clunky, ugly as fuck trial and error shit. It doesn't look good, play good, or offer anything but repetitive challenge. Not even the production values are good. The only reason people like this shit is because of the influx of babby handholding games and dominance of western titles. Terrible game. Demon's Souls is shite too.

considering the absolute lack of nuance in vidya criticism everything is usually either overrated or underrated in extreme ways. Trying to suss out which act of collective oneupmanship was worst seems insurmountable.

95% of the games I played this gen I would say are underrated, but that could be my Nintendo persecution complex so it's hard to say for sure. :derp

Also I'm super choosy with my games and don't usually buy on launch unless I know I'll probably like it...

Looking at the critical reception and general consumer reception of games like Uncharted 2 and Bioshock Infinite; they are both overrated as fuck because people can seemingly only express themselves in extreme binaries. I assume that's what people mean when they talk about games being overrated? There is plenty of critique to be found on these games, but they barely blip with regards to the collective consensus of quality.

Just an opinion but I think there is a difference between those two. Uncharted 2 is kind of a landmark game because its maybe the first really good/great synthesis of modern shooting/voice acting/and that auto platforming that is in vogue now. It took the cinematic and linear feel that people liked from COD 4, threw in a dash of Tomb Raider theme wise, and pushed it forward. It's an important game because of that however somebody feels necessarily about it individually. Yes, the original was obviously the first but it didn't all come together until the second one.

I would argue something like Bioshock Infinite wasn't groundbreaking in this way. It's a rehash of a game they made a number of years before with little to distinguish it relative to the review scores. In that sense it shares some of the same problems as Uncharted 3 (its way better than Uncharted 3 but you get my point).

I was more talking about the way people seemingly has to throw down laudations that are stronger than those they threw down last time they liked something. Which leads to every positively received major title release getting hyped to high heaven as the best thing ever.

I assume that's what people mean when they talk about games being overrated? There is plenty of critique to be found on these games, but they barely blip with regards to the collective consensus of quality.

Bioshock is a bad game, period. Vapid goal-oriented corridor gameplay, terrible shooting, on rails structure. It is a moving picture strapped into first person mode with guns and magic power. It is lauded as one of the best games of this generation; it is dog shit. I haven't played Bioshock Infinite because of this reason.

GTAIV is a middling game. It has the occasional cool idea mixed in one-dimensional mission design, terrible mission variety, terrible mission mechanics (forcing you to replay an entire 40 minute mission from scratch if you die for instance, without one hint of a checkpoint), horrible robot controls in an action game that has below standard cover mechanics in a game that requires it. Awarded for its storytelling and take on American modern living while managing to express jack shit of originality or pertinence or even consistency within the framework of its own narrative as it jumps from hoop to hoop and goal to goal without an ounce of respect for the narrative term called "character development." Its popularity and reviews prove that games are propelled by hype more so than actual mechanical depth and tight gameplay.

Dark Souls is an above average game with awful controls, physics, the definition of jank. Mind numbly simple AI and combat mechanics, though it gives the player a ride with unique enemy formations and setups, which, are very easy once gotten past, the game reuses the same core enemies over and over, which makes the "challenge" repetitive and in many cases, boring. Archaic design that makes the game an exercise in trial and error that, once gotten past, is rarely challenging again as you wallow through its repetition. A semi-challenging game with bad design that is considered challenging by virtue of the fact that it's slightly harder than the competition, rather than giving the player an honest to goodness reason to change their strategy or approach. Dark Souls is "hard" in that you travel 5-10 minutes to retrieve your soul and that's about it. Compared to Ninja Gaiden 2, for instance, which forced me to constantly change strategies on the fly, or Dead Rising which forces management of resources, and I don't get the big deal. The fact it's been treated as a savior for gamers is the icing on the cake.

All overrated.

There. Are you happy?

It's such a shame Deep Down is f2p because having the game create random scenarios single handedly fixes Dark Souls' main issue. Forcing the player to travel 10 minutes to refight the boss they died at is not hard to me. In some games like SMT there's reason to have tension in between save points and the boss room mostly because you don't know what the fuck you're going to fight, but in Dark Souls, the enemies between the boss and the save point are easy as shit, because you've already mastered fighting them. It's like Mega Man or some shit, which while fine for a platformer with three minute levels, is tedious as FUCK for an action game slash rpg. It gives little point to them beyond a means to grind souls. Why not just let me save time and start outside the boss room?  The game wouldn't be any easier, but it'd sure as fuck be less archaic. With random encounters, there would be less reason to memorize areas like the game is fucking Mega Man. Each new death would be a new experience, and as such, give the game more tension.

Review wise? GTA 4

'Nuff said

Player reaction wise? Dark Souls

I loved Demon's Souls. Thought it was one of the best this gen. Dark Souls is still a good game, but not as consistent nor as rewarding as Demon's Souls because of boneheaded design decisions and a cheap ass online implementation.

The only problem I had with MGSIV was too many cutscenes that were too long. The game itself was great.

Yep, that and the installs, took back my smoking habit thanks to them.

I really want to get one of those portable ashtray canister things. It'll stop me littering my butts outside the office! Agent York in Deadly Premonition also uses one

Dark Souls :lawd

I feel bad for people who didn't like it.  There's obviously something broken with them that just can't be fixed.
I wish I had the ability to like shitty ugly janky games :tocry :(

Demon's/Dark Soul's. Won't really get into this too much other than to say that I'm in the minority here but that's how I feel. Shitty controls and faux difficulty

You are so gay dudes make you hard, but that's my opinion.

Skyward Sword is pretty horribly overrated, I know it got some so-so reviews but it's a 6.0 / 10 at best :shh
