Yeah I have no idea why anyone would be comparing Dark Souls to MH :what

Unless they are stupid.  So if you'e making the comparison you need to ask yourself, "am I stupid?"

The answer of course is "yes" because you're making the comparison.  You may be thinking "no", but that's just because you're stupid.

That's not true at all. MH and Souls have similarities. It is like comparing Street Fighter to Final Fight. That said, Andrex's post/troll about Souls being an MH wannabe is :what

Whimsy Fun for me is code for I'm not 12 anymore and I won't buy your console systems anymore (and neither will the general public apparently) as long as you pretend it's still 1988.

But that's just me.

The first gears is a very good game that I have fond memories of. It was very fresh at the time. Even the second one is quite fun although they had already exhausted all their ideas by that point.

They simply have shown an inability to take the next step whatever that is with that franchise.

God of War suffers from the same issue. You already know exactly what the next version of these games are gonna be like note for note.

LA Noire actually felt pretty disappointing to me, since I expected so much from an experimental rockstar title. They go through all this effort with the face tech and making the city look really realistic but the story wasn't exactly spellbinding and the investigation gameplay was both too simple and repetitive.

Gears of War, controls were extremely sluggish, character design and art style was hideous. Unreal Tournament was such a fun shooter that controlled like a dream, I expected more of the same from Epic.

World of Goo. I was looking at the highest rated games on metacritic and that's the one that stands out to me. Probably a bunch of nintendo fans were ecstatic that a okay puzzle game released on wiiware in 2008.

While this is a testament to how forgettable it is by it not being brought up in this thread, but a lot more hate needs to go to Kingdoms of Amalur.  It tried to be everything that wound up being nothing, focus tested into the ground, and funded by taxpayer money, which was subsequently pissed away.

We all forgot about that game I think.

I played the demo for the free Mass Effect unlockables, and finishing the 40 minute demo was really really tedious. Just the blandest fantasy shit ever.

Playing Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes showed me that you can have a very generic fantasy setting, and still have the game be endearing through good art and characterisation.

I've been playing it on and off since I got it and holy Christ it's the epitome of "going through the motions". It's gigantic, too. There's some neat stuff in there, like the crafting and ability/attribute system, but it's sooooooo bland.

Assassins Creed 2 for me. I understand One had a lot of problems, but the groundwork was there for a good game. A Open world historic Hitman if you will, where the game has a specific mission to mission routine that you get into. Where it drops you into the missions and you're supposed to find a way through investigations how to kill the target. Each target is special with tons of way to go about it. They did'nt really build on the structure of the 1st one, instead it just became another open world game and I lost interests.

There's also MGS4 which is just a terrible disappointment. No game has disappointed me as most and I get kind of angry anytime someone praises it.

Mass Effect 1 is another highly rated game I don't get. I don't quite remember my original problems with the game, but I do know even without the technical issues on consoles, the game's combat is shit. It's wonky and simply not fun. It also had terrible level design, the level just looked and felt extremely bland. It's like they didn't even try to craft a place you'd want to see. Even the main hub world is boring and feels like a space mall more than anything. It dosen't help that side missions take place on copy and pasted "dungeons" that make Oblivion look like it has variety. The story could have been ok, but it quickly goes into generic ancient aliens crap. Sadly 1 is the best of the series.

Tales of Vesperia also. People act like its the best jrpg ever. Yeah it looks great, somehow better then all the rest of the Tales games this gen. But outside of Yuri, the cast sucks. The story is nothing great. The world is that now tired generic Tales medieval fantasy world complete with the same battle system from Abyss.

I'm pretty sure I finished that game, and until you mentioned it I had completely forgotten it existed. That's kind of the definition of middling.

Couldn't agree more with this. They put so much money and effort [and star power :lol] and the end product was just so bland and paint-by-numbers. It was a generic MMO that had the MMO part stripped out. Who would even want something like that?

Grand Theft Auto 4 stands out the most to me.  Pretty much anything from Rockstar, really.  And definitely The Last Of Us.

On the other side of the pond, JoJos' Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle got a 40/40 from Famitsu.  The game is a broken mess of a 2D fighter that runs at 30 FPS, has a shitty "story" mode, and locks out the "campaign" mode, forcing the player to download DLC to play it-- paid DLC, of course.

It's a fairly negative question to pose, I'd prefer to talk about underrated games - but as we're on it:

I'd say GTA IV as well. I bought into PS3 with MGS4, and I was super disappointed with that, but the MGO component was actually pretty awesome once you could get on and while people were still playing it. GTA IV had even greater hype but I got pretty bored with it - the new game is better in every conceivable way.

Also, I like the Uncharted games, but if I'm truly honest - I don't really like them for their gameplay. It's the Indiana Jonesy setting, and the quality of production.

I don't understand the allure of Pokemon and haven't since Red/Blue, and I don't really get how people are still playing Animal Crossing either. I'm going to try and go back to the latter, but games like those are too demanding of time IMO.

I don't either (or most turned-based RPGs in general, for that matter, especially Japanese RPGs), but I don't feel that those titles are as overrated as the big "AAA" budget games are.  I guess the new Pokemon is looking more like a game fitting of the 3DS platform, but some of the earlier games barely looked any different from the original Gameboy versions.  At least they started animating the monsters.  My biggest pet peeve with JPRGs are the games where battles have next to no animations.  It's so damn lazy.

I understand the Animal Crossing appeal if you're new to it.  Some people throw around the idea that Nintendo makes the same games because the newest one will always be someone's first.  I don't know about that, but I think it applies to Animal Crossing.

tbh, it's hard to think of (exclusive) games that aren't overrated by forum people.  probably something like banjo nuts and bolts that people hate for what it isn't.

It lives and dies by the quality of your weapons but they make it unnecessarily difficult to get a specific one. It's a loot game that doesn't want you to grind. I'm sympathetic to the notion, but if you're going to have random loot that can leave you with shit weapons for long periods of time it's just stupid.

The third gears in retrospect is very tepid. I legit can't remember anything I did in it or any exciting action sequence. It's like I never played it.

That's not the case for the first two for me.

I'll make this the last time I mention it as I've gone on about these two titles more than enough for the year.

The thing that happened with both The Last of Us and Bioshock infinite is a strong media desire to reward campaign games where story matters versus games like Call of Duty where the story doesn't matter. The problem is they overly bent over backwards in both cases without really looking at any of the gameplay flaws of either title (and in some cases the story flaws)

Both good games at least for me. Glad I played both of them. I enjoyed both of them. Just not the wholly amazing greatest of all time experiences they were made out to be.

I also think that overreacting to the claims made by "the videogame media" by slamming the fuck out of them (the media and the games) is understandable and in a lot of cases warranted.

Video game media is not only an echo-chamber, it is an amplifier. Hype is contagious, and hate is often zealous.
