PS2.

Yoshi's Island sucks

No, but it means there's less reason to own one console above or in addition to another.

Not when we're comparing it to SNES or PSX

Honestly I enjoyed the N64 a whole lot more than the Wii. The Wii takes the spot for most overrated imo.

If Nintendo would have kept their software output at the same level as the first 18 months of the Wii, it would have been glorious. Unfortunately, they did not.

Just be told, I would probably say that the Xbox 360 is my most played console of all time. I'm sure having really good Virtua fighter and Daytona USA ports helped a lot with that

Well, obviously, because most games that are available on one are not available on the other.

N64 is the most overrated. When people post their list of favourite games on platform xyz there's usually some variation in what's listed. With N64 the lists are almost always the same for a reason.

the PS3's is even worse!

honestly, people were fine* with it until the 360's replaced it as the standard.  and at the time the alternatives were the n64 and dreamcast controllers.  later the original xbox controller got stigma for being too large, and the gamecube for being too small (both are comfortable, imo).  crazy to think the dual shock 4 is the first significant change since 97 or 98.  almost every impression of the dual shock 4 is roughly "so I hated that fucking awful piece of shit ps3 controller, but this is pretty good."

At least I can still play the N64 classics no problem. Go back to non-JRPG PSX games and feel the scust :smug

Even as a kid N64 games hurt my eyes with their uglyness. Granted, so did PS1 games but I can still play Klonoa and Crash Bandicoot with no problems.

Ah yes, the xbox 360, the system where pretty much all of its best exclusives were in its first two years and then poof. What a great system!

Ah, as opposed to the system which Sony has been playing catch-up with all generation, and still hasn't caught up. PS3 has no Party system, cross-game chat, system-wide music player, background downloads, guaranteed demos for all digital downloads, Indie Games (if you can find them, I mean), and software download speeds which don't give me enough time to go make a sandwich AND walk around the block to eat it and work off the rage.

Still, I must admit that I enjoy my PS3! It's my home's only Blu-Ray player, and the DVR function of Torne is serviceable. Sometimes it's even fun to play a game without worrying about Achievements or my GamerScore completion percentage! Trophies are so ineffectual and cute!

PS2 is best for single player gaming but if we're being real it wasn't great if you were into online games.  You could argue for SOCOM, or uh, resident evil outbreak, whatever.  Xbox was better.  Xbox 360 and PS3 are way better.

Really, if you were into multiplayer games, early 2000s PC multiplayer was choice.  Still, at the time Xbox had some killer multiplayer games.

Notice how I did not mention the playstation 3 in my post.  ;) We are talking about what you think is the best system. I consider software the main component of what constitutes best system. For me, that's the ps2 if we are talking consoles. Playstation 3, and best system, in the same sentence is laughable. However, I feel the same way about the 360 for the reasons I gave. What drives 360 software as being the best system to offer in terms of library? Gears? Forza? Exclusives are a big thing for me when I consider a systems quality and it's that reason I prefer the original Xbox over the 360.

The only console I ever had die on me was my first PS2, which was not a launch unit, but still ended up with DRE within a year of purchase.

...and I still think the PS2 is the best console ever, hands down, no debate.

I'd give the PS2 the edge if I were more into rhythm, racing, and tbs games, but since I prefer action, shooting, fighting, and arcade ports in general, the 360 can't be beat. The PS2 does get some bonus points for having the two best wrestling games ever tho.

I still think it's silly to ignore everything but exclusives when comparing different generations of consoles. They should be judged by their entire library (though you can/should ignore lazy rom dumps, like compilation discs of games that have been ported 50000 times, the Wii VC, some PSN/XBLA games, and arguably HD remasters).

Xbla is fantastic. But I don't think it's that good enough to make 360 jump out to "best system ever", but then, the subject of "best system" is subjective. PSX is my favorite system, though I feel ps2 is better. I can see why 360 would be someones favorite, after going on 8 years of playing on the thing. That's a long ass time.

You are also right, 360 does have more in the way of say, fighters. Fighters were entirely revived this gen. But most of those action, fighting, and shooting games are available on other platforms, namely the playstation 3. There are exceptions, mostly xbla titles like MotW, Rez HD, Ikaruga HD;etc only available on xbla. But they're still ports. You said to ignore psn/xbla games, and imo, those are the only major qualifiers for BOTH systems. I found both dd services had more games that appealed to my tastes than anything on the mainstream market - for the most part. Yet, the dd titles are the ones that were mostly exclusive. That mostly leaves retail titles. Maybe I'm ignorant on 360 library, but pretty much every major fighter is on ps3, and the major action games of this gen (Bayo, DMC4, NG2, Vanquish) are all available on the ps3 though some of those versions are not optimal they're still available. Shooters, I'll grant you. 360 mopped ps3 up with 2d shooters.

For reference, my favorite dd games this gen are Outrun 2 HD, Mega Man 9, and Hard Corps Uprising. All of which are also on ps3. Though, I owned them on the 360 and not on ps3. To me, it's like saying ps2 is such a great system because it has Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Beyond Good and Evil,  and SSX3. All of those games are on the other consoles, and none of those games go into why ps2 was such a great system: exclusives. You played the ps2 because it had all this shit you couldn't find on gc and xbox. You play your 360 and neglect your ps3 because, for the most part, both systems have an almost 1:1 ratio of game library. Practically all of the major games this generation have multiplatform. What's the point of playing a ps3 when you've got an Xbox 360? Exclusives. It will always be down to exclusives, and exclusives aren't that important these days and are becoming more and more rare.

I didn't mean to ignore PSN/XBLA entirely, just the lazy re-releases of old games that didn't bring anything new to the table (like PS1 classics or emulated Sega Genesis games). And I agree that you should ignore multiplatform games if you're comparing consoles from the same generation, like Xbox to the PS2 or PS3 to the 360. But if you want to compare the PS2 to the 360, there isn't much overlap in their libraries, so you're better off taking everything into account (ie. you can't play SF4 on the PS2 and you can't play Sands of Time on the 360).

The PS2 has a ton of exclusives and a more robust library overall, so I have no problem with people saying it's the best console ever. For me personally, though, the niche arcade ports exclusive to the 360 push it over the edge (along with all of the other great games on the console, exclusive or not).
