Recommend me some graphic works of fiction!
« on: October 22, 2013, 05:53:11 PM »
Recently reread Sandman seeing as my library had the absolute versions :drool

Starting in on Fables, picking up a few books of Preacher today, I'm digging my library's selection, it seems pretty extensive.

So I ask you -- Borians, Boritos, and dumpster sluts -- lay some knowledge on me! What should I be reading that's along the lines of what I've mentioned?

Fables sucks.
Preacher's aight.
Lucifer's the shit.

Since you JUST finished a re-read of Sandman, I strongly suggest you do not pass Go, do not collect $200 and get started on Lucifer.

Y the Last Man is okay but doesn't really hold together. SAGA is a massively better work (though still ongoing).

When I say Fables "sucks" I mostly mean it squanders what little originality it has in its premise and coasts on James Jean's gorgeous covers. It wants to be Sandman for Fairy Tales but it's more along the lines of Grimm or Once Upon a Time. Also the author is a KINDA racist asshole jerk. Approaching Orson Scott Card levels.

do you want fantasy stuff only or would you mind some semi-realistic dramas as well?

East of West if crazy strange wild west fantasy plus biblical Apocalypse sounds interesting to you.

Gundam  The Origin if  a classic war epic science fiction story with robots sounds interesting to you.

New X-Men if  a modern and progressive X-men story that's kind of strange sounds interesting to you.

Saga if "whatever the hell I want" imagination trip with snarky humor and dialogue sounds interesting to you.

Fatale if you like the idea of having the female film noir character involved in cthulhu type stuff.

Transmetropolitan if you're cool.

There's also Lazarus which had it's first trade come out recently. Its good so far. It's about a woman who is basically her families' enforcer. Except her family owns like most of the US in this bad future where things have become corporate feudalism. She also is'nt human and there's something up with her connection with her "family". So far it's been well paced and well written. The character's are written realistically and interestingly. In something lesser the main female character would have been written as very cold and calculating to the point of just being unrealistic. She's not a robot, she's a human being and even though someone can be very cold and professional, they would still have some sort of emotions. Lazarus has avoided that with it's main character. She comes off way more well rounded. It's very good so far, you should read it.

And more about Gundam The Origin. Maybe you don't know Gundam, maybe you do and don't like it. I'd still recommend this because I'm reading it now and it surprises me how good it is. It just reads like some classical story that if you had read as a kid it would stay with you. It just hits all the right notes with it's story telling. A good male teen character who anyone can relate to thrust into a war and yet Amuro kind of behaves like I think a teen would. You've got great villains with great dramatic flair, but yet do come off better than "I"m evil". It's just really good and the art is pretty amazing.

I know Gundam is a classic, but even with the old cartoon it felt lame in some places, cold as if someone who can't write wrote it, and just plain bad. Gundam The Origin is the best Gundam thing I've experienced honestly, really makes you see why the original series is a classic. Because it's just got a pretty timeless tale with good characters.

There's also East of West which was so good I read it multiple times while sitting in Starbucks. Now I wont say the story or characters are great, but as far as vol.1 goes they are just ok. Yet thats fine, because I'm not sure this thing needs deep and great characters or even story. It's just so crazy and strange. The world and story are so intriguing and filled with imagination that it doesn't matter.

Wow you guys, great recommendations all around, thank you!

I do prefer fantasy, but a good enough story would transcend that.

First two volumes of Fatale are pretty good.

Stuff I enjoy which isn't on the generic "watchman, sandman etc" axis of comics

Archer & Armstrong - Comedic super "heroics" wherein an Evangelical Assassin and an Immortal Socialist team up to take down um, everybody. Fun and funny stuff.

Battlefields - Garth Ennis's affecting and hilarious look at various soldiers during WW2 from all sides of the conflict.  Good recurring tales about Russian female fighter pilots in two of the volumes

Hawkeye - awesome street level comics about what Hawkeye does when he's not out with the avengers.  Very good arts.

Nextwave Agents of HATE - Superheroes turned up to 11.  Absolute insanity.

Stumptown - Greg Rucka does his "damaged female lead" thing.  This time she's a private eye in Portland.  very good stuff.

Multiple Warheads - Brandon Graham's pure visual joy in comic book form.  Also check out his King Cat trade and Prophet relaunch

Phonogram - Pop music as magic by Kieron Gillen.  The more you like Blur, the more you'll like this series about the importance of music in our lives.

Lost Cat / Werewolves of Montpelier / I Killed Hitler / the left bank gang - basically anything by Jason, the Norwegian comic artist is worth reading and they are all fairly short as well

Journey Into Mystery - The Kieron Gillen "kid loki" series.  Loki is a teenager trying to do good but constantly fucking it up.  Very Machiavellian twists.

New York Mon Amour / Goddamn This War! / The Arctic Marauder - Anything by Jacques Tardi is worth reading.

Carl Bark's Donald Duck / Uncle Scrooge books from Fantagraphics.  Absolutely wonderful cartooning

this should at least get you started.

I'm totally into Euro comics right now.

Reading the hell out of XIII Spy stuff and the Edgar P Jacobs post war sci-fi intrigue stuff. Not for everyone, but I'm totally into it.

Also loving the hell out of early Judge Dredd thanks to my library carrying the Complete Case Files series (up to vol 6)

cosign on Nextwave and Phonogram

Archer & Armstrong is pretty enjoyable tho I don't love it as much as Eric P

I should really check out Journey Into Mystery considering it's basically Phonogram Starring Kid Loki - any particular issue or did it start a new volume?

It basically started a new volume but not a new numbering scheme because comics.

If you have an ipad or other tablet i can't recommend Comixology enough if only for the sales.  they regularly put good stuff on sale for a dollar an issue which makes it easy to check out something that sounds quite interesting on the cheap

they also carry a ton of digital only comics which are quite good.

I can tell you my reading list from that if you like

sure, I'm addicted to Batman '66 but might check out some others. I'm keeping a better eye on the sales but lmk if Journey into Mystery goes on sale again. At $0.99 / issue I will buy basically anything in the universe. and at $1/issue + Guided View it's not worth my time to pirate.

Looks like I want to start with Journey Into Mystery #622 - leaving a note here for future

Also, I know it's blase to complain about comics naming and numbering but JESUS FUCK it shouldn't be so hard for someone like me who "wants to read the Kieron Gillen Kid Loki stuff" which seems like a common enough request

please for the love of god read Edison Rex and Bandette Each issue is $.99 and worth it.

it's premise is "Lex Luthor Wins"
Bandette is "breezy 60s eurocrime pop comic"

i'm also reading Kinski but I haven't made up my mind on that one yet.  Basically a guy who is failing at his job and his life decides that he has to save an "abused" dog.  it's pretty dramatic, but there's only 3 issues thus far. It could fall off the rails at any minute

There's only one issue of The Real West but I lked it.

will check both out. God I love breezy 60s pop comics. the recent Steranko SHIELD comixology sale was just  :gladbron

and I love Casanova way more than I should based on its awesome art

turns out my library has all 6 insanely named Kid Loki collections, so I'll check those out next

there's a crossover issue with some New Mutants reboot which isn't great, but is pretty good to see Loki interact with other mythologies.  There is also a just released Thor book which wraps up the Kid Loki run thanks to a crossover in both books.

there's a lot of references to Fear Itself which that book spawned from, so you may want to read the wikipedia entry.  I wouldn't recommend reading Fear Itself as it's pretty shit.

and sweet Jesus see if your Library has The Complete Case Files of Judge Dredd or has the Rogue Trooper Tales from Nu Earth book or even the Al Ewing Zombo book.

I cannot stress this enough but I think you'd really like Al Ewing's work.

I read the complete Incredible Hercules run so I got enough background on Fear Itself from that series. Boy.

Seattle Library System has Judge Dredd case files but King County (my side of the lake) does not. It's rough as I really want to read it but I don't want to drive to downtown unless I can get 2-3 case files at a time.

Read Sleeper Spencer. It's seriously amazing, skip the prequel and read it afterwards as it's good, but meaningless without context.

Seriously, Sleeper and Incognito are those rare moments when talents seriously bleed (in a positive manner) into each other.

Did he do preacher?

He did, and it wasn't very good. His writing mostly comes across as 'I'm so clever, and funny' angles. But tbh, he's still banging hotter girls than we occult and the Freemasons.

Are you confusing Grant Morrison with Garth Ennis, or are you referring to a different post?
