Someone report on Ass Creed 4

Pirates are awesome, ocean/waterfaring games are awesome, Caribbean settings are awesome. Sounds like a win/win formula until you see Assassin's Creed on the cover.

We need some Bore Real Talk. Is this a wait a few weeks till you can pick it up for 40 bucks on Amazon WINNER or is it a wait two years and buy it in a bin at Gamestop for 5 dollars STNKER?

I read that (game spoilers)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the main character isn't an assassin.  maybe he becomes one later on, I didn't read much, but he starts as a pirate who kills an assassin and takes his clothes/identity.

the real world/non-animus stuff is about Abstero, a fictional game developer.  you're a game tester working on the studio's pirate video game.

sounds so dumb.  it's great.  I'm also waiting on impressions of the game before I decide on it.

Rev3's review praised the game, but repeatedly brought up how tedious and repetetive everything gets.  The game even repeats the same cut scenes over and over (like watching your crew patch up the ship after a battle) and you can't skip them.

People jizzed all over ACIII at first, too- not getting fooled again.  I'd wait a few more weeks, at least, to see what people really think of it.

This is the game my friend decided he was going to get with his PS4 because Watchdogs got delayed.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry for him. These games get worse and worse each year. I played a bit of AC4 and its straight poo poo. I went back to GTAV.

AC2 was the pinnacle of AC games it s all been ok or middling since.

You know what's sad is that I thought the premise was really fascinating in the first two (even if told in a clunky manner). But now its basically at Resident Evil stage. If anybody is playing these games for the story at this point, they are a crazy person.

Yeah, jumping through different eras is always interesting to me. Shame about the genetic memory crap and all the other nonsense. I only played AC2 so I'm sure I only saw the tip of the iceberg. I did read summaries of Brotherhood and whatever the third Ezio game was called, but I don't remember a single thing about them.

I could have played POP rehashes for a few more years if they hadn't gone the ANGST route after SOT. They did pile on a bit much on this series though...I haven't really played one to completion since II (I am part of the problem cause I own them all).

I dunno, ONE version should run and look great and the impartial reviews from AC haters make it seem like ACIV is just below AC2:B but 1,000 leagues above unplayable crap that was AC3.  I mean I hated AC3 with a burning passion and was going to pass on ACIV but enough level-headed people convinced me to jump back on.

Played 2 hours of this and despite HATING AC SO MUCH because of the torture of 30 hours of AC3 fresh in my mind, uh...this is super fun!  It feels like AC2-gen again.  Like the designers know how to make pro-gamer fun european vacation simulator.  The first city, Havana is totally old school AC and the game gives you lots of chances to do optional stealth instead of fighting.  Like how in AC3 the guarded chests were always bullshit and you end up fighting everyone and then doing WORST LOCKPICKING MINIGAME EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME.  Here you can sneak in, kick the chest open and dash out before anyone knows your there.  YAY.

Even the sailing which I thought was kind of meh in 3 because it was slowww has been sped up a ton.  You can fire cannons again the second after you fire off your current shot.  No more stupid loading.  The boat moves faster and there's way more stuff in the sea.

I think this is gonna be a fun one.

God, this game is such a return to form for the series.  It's finally a fun stealth sandbox again.  The game is really non-punishing and gives you lots of room to make your own stealth way to everything optional (haven't done much main mission yet, just running around side stuff) and it never requires stealth for any of it but if you do play it stealthly you often get stealth bonus money & items out of nowhere to reward you for BEING AWESOME.

I'm just going to pretend AC3 never happened and hope that everyone involved in design decisions in that game were fired and will never work on an AC game again.

In Ezio's trilogy, yeah. I don't recall evesdropping. Tailing someone, sure. Which I guess could be under that umbrella, but evesdropping: No.

AC3/Connor? No. They're back and they're fucking HORRIBLE due to the bug AI and bug side-marks for 100% sync.

I hear there's a bunch in AC4 too.  I'm only in Sequence 3 as, like always, I end up doing all the side stuff in the game first, but there's only been 1 of those missions so far and yeah it still sucks but it's slightly better because AC4 is less punishing than AC3 and the stealth also works slightly better.

Basically my thoughts on AC4 after like a dozen hours from someone who thought AC2 was top5 game experience last gen and AC3 was the 2nd worst tedious game in the world in a good series behind Zelda Spirit Tracks, AC4 is...pretty good.

Feels a lot like AC:B/AC:R.  Lots of collectibles, but at the same time the game was designed by someone who understands and feels for OCD gamers so it makes it very easy and satisfying to collect things.  Lots of YOU FOUND EVERYTHING ICON TURNS GOLD MENU TURNS GOLD TEXT TURNS GOLD YAY.

The sailing was made waaaay faster and more fun.  Map looks big but between fast travel and full speed sailing you can get from one place to another in < 3-4 mins.  It's like Wind Waker but 3-5x faster.  Ship battles are much improved and pretty fun.  The feel of just being a pirate sailing around and jumping onto little islands and grabbing treasure is good.  Nice looking game with good use of color.

The main story quests are ok.  The sub-objectives are slightly easier and it's less frustrating when you fail them.  But it's still frustrating if you're trying to get 100% because sub-objectives count for 20% of each main mission and sometimes they don't even tell you the sub-objective so you better hit start here and there and check.  Otherwise missions are fun with some bad ones here and there featuring tailing stealthly.

The subquests are way better.  The assassination contracts are fleshed out a bit and fun and always have a stealth option.  Every chest/secret that's guarded always has a stealth or stealth kill option which makes you feel badass when you do it and pull it off.  There are forts like AC:B that are decently fun and uncover a huge chunk of the sea fog of war so you get a complete map if you do them all + all viewpoints.  Fast travel to any viewpoint instantly.  There are puzzles like the glyphs but not as interesting (not historical stuff, just like match symbols on the ground), there are treasure maps to find hidden chests like RDR.

It basically feels like AC:B/R but with a B+ quality done Wind Waker sea to explore.  The story started off actually pretty interesting and I thought it'd be a cool Assassin's vs. Templar's tale filled with excitement and conspiracy and all that, but then like a chapter later it's like fuck it, you're a pirate and the game is about pirate stuff, we'll get back to that Assassin stuff probably right before the end of the game.  So not expecting much from the tale, but it's still better than the junk that was AC3's tale.  It's also fun and not miserable and dark like AC3.

So far it's addictive and does a good job getting the sour taste of AC3 out.  There's almost nothing from AC3 retained lol.  Even the graphics remind me of the old engine.  I think only killing animals and crafting are from AC3 and the two person kill animations in combat.  Otherwise it's like the old games again.  But AC5 will need to be a pretty decent jump as it's really run its course at this point.

It looks ok.  Nice colors, lots of trees/city in view, but honestly just looks like a 5 year old game like AC2 on PC.  The best part about it is the smoothness and lack of load times on PS4.

I actually think the graphics took a step back from AC3.  4 has better colors, more interesting environment, but the structures and environmental effect (snow footsteps) and forest stuff in 3 is a lot more "next-gen" looking.  AC3 has better lighting too.  AC4 almost feels like it's back to the AC2 engine.

Weird.  Even with the higher resolution, PS4/Xbone should be capable of much more than the last-gen consoles.  I highly doubt it but did more processing power get allocated for gameplay elements like AI?

It's not like they were aiming for 1080/60fps on PS4/XBone.  I'm guess that AC4 still runs at 30fps even after PS4 patch?

That part wouldn't be so bad besides the full-sync requirements. The full-sync makes it TERRIBLE. It took me like two hours to do that.

I need to go back and finish the achievements up. It's the only Ass Creed I haven't 1000gs/100% trophied just yet besides AC4. :/ That's how much AC3 and it's ending disappointed me: I went through the bugs and the story shat on me to the point where I don't want to touch the series. :'(

The water is just ok.  AC2 had nice water in Venice and I've seen wayyyy more impressive water in games like Far Cry/Crysis and a whole bunch of recent PC games.  It's nice when you're near an island and can see the fish underneath it but when you're at sea it's nothing special although actually the most interesting and impressive thing the water does is have big waves occasionally in storms that can damage your boat if you're not facing them.  That actually does look quite cool and adds to the experience.  But when you're just sailing around on calm sea and diving into water near locations it's nothing special imo.

Vegetation is the same as AC3 I think?  Same bushes and grass and stuff that shuffles around.  Haven't really noticed it.  And I've never noticed any difference with the NPC crowds since like AC1.  Can't find any good PC 1080p pics of AC Rev but from my memory it looks pretty similar graphically (same director too).

I mean it's a nice looking game sure.  But the few friends I showed my PS4 games to all said AC4 looked like a PS3 game and they could barely tell it wasn't.  It's very much a last-gen game and stuff like Knack and Killzone is more impressive visually imo.

Yes, AC4 is 30fps/1080p after patch.  It's a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally shit engine.  Runs terrible on PC and that's probably why you're not seeing anything too crazy with the PS4/Xbone versions.  The AC2 engine ran really well on both consoles and PC, but the new engine they made for AC3 & AC4 seems to truly be a PoS.  People with $3,000 gaming computers can't get anywhere near 60fps on PC and it doesn't even look all that impressive.  Just a bad engine and I doubt Ubisoft will spend the effort to optimize it over the years and instead will just stick with 30fps console versions and busted ass PC versions.

It's pretty much rpg stat based.  If you have good enough stats it's easy.  You drive by them and shoot, turn and drive by them and shoot, repeat.  If you keep losing you probably aren't upgraded enough for the battle.

Agree that ship combat isn't much fun.  Controlling the ship is surprisingly tedious too.  I thought it would be like Far Cry where you get to admire the scenery but even cooler with a pirate ship.  Instead it's a real bitch cuz it's so easy to keep bumping into rocks.

Performance wasn't as bad as I expected.  With SLI, I can get constant 60fps with everything maxed out at 1080P.

Just for curiosity, I switched off SLI and the framerate immediately drops to 40-60 fps even when I dropped AA settings to only FXAA.  This doesn't sound too bad but with BF4, one 780TI is still enough for close to 100 FPS with max settings at 1080p.  Even at max settings, AC4 doesn't come anywhere close to BF4's visuals.  Like you said, AC4 looks more like a highly tuned PS3/360 game.  2 780 TI really shouldn't be necessary to get 60fps with AC4.

Also, the stupid game locks me at 60fps which makes 120hz useless.

What do you guys think of the stealth in AC4?  Maybe I just haven't played AC for too long but I found the stealth clumsy and unnatural.  It bugs me like crazy that I can't crouch or drop to the group.  It's either walk around slowly or hide in foliage.  Also, there are certain locations where it's really hard to sneak around undetected without first scoping out everything, which usually leads to being detected.  It just throws me out of the realism when I have to run away for 30 seconds and then run back to finish the mission like nothing happened.

For that early mission where you have to sneak into the fort to steal back Edward's possessions, I got so annoyed by being detected so many time that I just ended up baiting the guards onto the roof and pushing them off.

Stealth is bad in the main missions in AC.  It's been like that for a couple of games.  Perfect stealth runs basically are keep retrying to learn guard patterns then hide in bushes and move between bushes before their yellow alert becomes red.

But the stealth on the optional stuff is pretty fun.  Like for chests or secrets in towns/islands (the script looking icon) that are guarded.  There's usually a tree or roof or something you can run up and jump down and get the treasure or jump down kill the guards without setting off alerts and get the treasure.  Stealth is also more fun for this stuff because it's not like 10 mins long of bush to bush like some of the main missions.  In short bursts like this it's pretty fun to sneak around and kill someone.  Or like an assassination mission where someone's on a wood bridge and you sneak into the circle radius by swimming and then climb up and grab him by the foot and toss him in the water.  That kind of stuff is fun.

Best advice for enjoying the game the most I think is to ignore sub-objectives in main missions and don't worry if you get seen in main missions.

Also the ship isn't that bad to control.  But I agree on the getting stuck on rocks and stuff.  It's why I try to fight in open sea areas.  But yeah, just full speed it then drop to no speed to turn then full speed again.  Gets fun when you get used to it imo.

Glad you were able to get 60fps.  But yeah, game shouldn't require the beast of the machine you have for that.  It's a shitty unoptimized engine :\

YES. WHY IS THIS A GAMEPLAY DECISION.

Someone on gaf recommended turning off most of the hud besides SSI (I dunno what this does) and updates (which when you open a chest tells you what was in it) and I remember trying this in some games and it just made them a pain in the ass, but uh, here it's actually kind of cool.

Like I attacked a fort and then it told me to kill the main officer so I looked around for ways to scale the fort and got to a high vantage point and used eagle vision to find the commander in gold and then made my way over avoiding and taking out guys, finding treasures I see along the way and then stealth took him out.  Then for sailing I just use the map to figure out the general direction I want to go (like a real map) and then sail away and as I pass islands I look out my scope and see if anything looks cool and if there is I jump out and explore them.  While sailing I look around for other ships and use my scope to eye their goods and see if they're worth sinking.  I dunno, it just feels a little more fun and like actual exploration without the mini-map pointing every object out to you.

Might be worth a try to get more enjoyment out of it.

It sounds more realistic since even an assassin shouldn't be able to know so many details about his surroundings.  However, that also seem like a lot of work for an already lengthy game.

Man, I just can't get over how much I love this game.  I hated ACIII so, so much.  Was pure torture playing it for 30+ hours.  So tedious and unfun.  And for me story is pretty important in a game, which is why I love ACII so much for the grand tale it tells.

Yet even though ACIV doesn't have much of a plot, I don't even care.  The game is just one of the best sandbox games I've ever played.  The world is so much fun to explore and mess around in.  This is the first AC that finally hits that GTA sandbox fun the series has always wanted.  It's so much fun to find some plantation island, sneak around stealthly killing all the guards in any way you want (not because you have to!  But because you actually want to stealth it and get that satisfaction) while cutting all the alarms and then looting the wharehouse and getting actual useful loot (useful upgrade system helps a lot!) and exploring the island for collectibles and hidden mysteries and skinning a few animals to upgrade something new on your character.  Not because you had to do any of that at all...but because...why not?  It's fun and you just had a great 10-15 mins of gaming.

The main missions are definitely the weakest link because unlike the above situation, you're still forced to play scripted missions where they want you to play in scripted ways and if you go for 100% sync it can be tedious and a lot of trial & error.

But thankfully the game is 20% main missions/story and 80% awesome sandbox world.  There's so many assassin's contracts that give you free reign to assassinate someone any way you'd like!  Stealth onto an enemy ship and kill the target?  Get in your ship and tail his ship and sink him to the sea?  Fight his ship and board it and air assassinate your target from the mast and loot the ship?  Sure!  The assassination contracts + exploration + warehouse islands give the free-form PLAY YOUR OWN WAY sandbox AC game that I've always wanted gameplay-wise.  Absolutely love it.

And on top of that Naval stuff is fun, the upgrade system is fun.  The world has so many nice touches to make it feel alive.  The music is SO GOOD.  The singing while fast sailing was an incredible decision as it adds so much to the ambiance and makes it a perfect pirate sim.  Love the shanty songs.  And the music players in taverns playing good music...awesome!  And just little stuff like a guy fishing on a rock on an island and ships sailing around fighting each other.  Waves affecting the boat movement.  Scoping out things with your scope.  Treasure maps, etc... it's so well done and meaty and fleshed out.

Also turning off everything on the HUD besides SSI & updates (so you know what's in the chests you get and see objectives) makes the game so much better.  I love going to islands and instead of just running out collectible icons, I get to high ground and use eagle vision to scope out the enemies, the treasures, the animals and then I make my own path.  Sailing is nice just using the main map to point in the direction you want to go and look out at islands as you pass them to see if you want to check them out or scope out the ships you pass to see if you want to fight them.  Even the forts are way more fun when you make your way to high ground and use eagle vision to spot the commander and stealth take him out.  Just makes it a far more enjoyable experience for sure.

And I'm only like 1/3rd through the game now!  (top 1/3rd of the map clear).  Even if the story ends up being weak, they've made such a fantastic sandbox game that any story is all icing on top and the frustrations of sub-objectives in the story missions are annoying but a one hiccup on an otherwise fantastic game.  I haven't even touched the MP, but it looks deep with a lot of content and even though I'm not an MP person I'm looking forward to messing around with it after I finish the SP game.

Oh and even the Abstergo challenges are great this time around.  They remind me of Saints Row 3/4 challenges where they reward you simply for doing cool stuff you normal do in the game so as you explore the world and do your own thing you're constantly seeing "gj, challenge complete!  Here's some rewards!" which is really satisfying.

They knocked this one out of the park.  Even Revelations wasn't bad (just under-budgeted and rushed), so I have a lot of trust now with this director and look forward to any future ACs he makes.

Oh and I think they've got one more Pirate AC left in them (maybe next game will be ACIV: Subtitle?).  Because with the talks of social gaming for the next AC I can totally sea an open world pirate adventure like ACIV with 64 player free roam on a map while you're doing the SP stuff. Would be cool to see actual people sailing around and you can fight and loot them or start up an MP game of cat & mouse on an island.  There's so much potential here.

Definitely favorite AC behind AC2 and totally for different reasons.  AC2 for great story adventure, AC4 for Saints Row 3/4 type awesome sandbox fun.  I think you'll like this one demi if you don't expect too much out of the story.

It was your glowing recommendation that convinced to give this game a try after AC3, Bebpo.  All I've done so far is the "exclusive"(?) three-mission story with the chick from AC3 Liberation, as a warm-up.  While I'm not complaining about extras like this, seeing as how it takes place after AC4 and is connected to ACIII (Conner even has a voice cameo), I don't really get why this was added- especially when it could have been added into the AC3 Liberation HD port coming next year.  Weird.

I never got around to playing Liberation (and since it's a lot like III, I'll probably skip it for good.  Will be hard to go back to anything ACIII-style after all the ACIV improvements) so I haven't played the Avellone bonus missions.

The game opens at at the start of sequence 3.  That's a good time to start free roaming doing side-stuff.  Although it adds more stuff as you get further into the story.  There's also the real-world side stuff but I'm waiting until end-game and I'll just do it all at once.

Well, Liberation pretty much starts up right away and has no Animus crap, so it has that going for it, but then it has the stupid dress system that brings it down (basically you need to wear certain clothes to do certain missions and with certain outfits you can't do ANYTHING apart from walk around and/or you can't fight).  The AC4 missions are nothing like this and it's straight-up "GO RESCUE THIS LADY AND KILL FOLKS" stages.

Controls are still kinda shitty. There'll be times when my dude will just hang there on a ledge instead of climbing up it when I'm in the middle of a chase, even though I'm pressing forward.
