This company seems eager to drive itself to irrelevance on old gaming platforms in favour of milking past successes on new ones. If they drag Eidos teams into making online games there isn't a market for... well I dunno really. Lets see how that goes. Was anyone really crying out for a loosely based Legacy of Kain F2P MMO? How are SE doing financially these days? Are they doing okay?

More than likely  a lot of those titles are multi platform. Please don't find quarrel with them. You guys complain there is nothing to play on smart devices. Here are things to play on smart devices. You still complain. WHAT DO YOU WANT? Be open minded and stop wanting. When you stop wanting you will be open to less heartache. Just accept as is and adapt.

Let's be honest. When was the last good S-E japan game? Those days are over. Either we are waiting for HD games years and years, or waiting for an HD port two-three years after it was announced, or we get mobile games. No matter what, if you liked S-E in the past you will be crying. The best remedy is to not care. Which is easy when you put out titles that look like Lightning Returns.

it's a good thing bravely default is coming in the next two month so we can complain again how jrpg are stale and too animey before going back to complaining about how there are no jrpg in the first place :heh

i swear if i ever meet the internet genie i'm asking him to kick every single one of these guys straight into their tiny balls

i kinda wonder how bravely default is going to get received,i heard there is a scene where one of the character peep on one of the female heroine so i expect at least three "SEXISM AND JAPAN IS WRONG" article on kotak

Lightning Returns looks great. 14 was good.

I am buying a 3DS and I hate handhelds.

Even the iOS stuff is mostly ports.

So no it does suck, because I like SE games and I like consoles. Everything's going mobile and it sucks, because no I don't want to adapt. I want good single player games, not f2p nonsense. I'm not asking for big budget games(which I love) I'd take cheap projects like Drakengard 3.

So no, this all sucks and now it seems to be not just Japan, but also the perfectly decent Eidos. Hell supposedly the Montreal team just cancled a new ip. Great, are they going to work on idk Deus Ex Online?

Kingdom Hearts 3, Lightning Returns, Drakengard 3 and FFXV all being on consoles give me a little hope that all is not lost.

I cannot tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but cell phone games are rapidly overtaking what qualified as mid-tier console games this- and previous-generations.

The trouble is, more and more money is being dumped into gaming on portable devices, and that means the same kind of spending recklessness we have seen in stationary console game dev.

SE's output is shit, their console crap can't compete with the western big boys, and eidos isn't able to float a company of that size alone.

So it's either phone stuff where they're better than the average shovelware developer, or reinvent themselves on the PC like SEGA.

With me and mobile games, it's a little bit of half and half. I just wish Google and Apple would stop being dumb and release a program for playing mobile games on PC.

I would really like to see console developers go back to how they were doing things 15-20 years ago with a healthy lineup of mid-tier games, that would probably get me interested in these new consoles than some more AAA shooters [most of which I'd just play on PC anyway].

I'm more concerned about Sleeping Dogs, Deus Ex, Hitman, etc... SE Japan is already pretty much dead to me but they've published some surprisingly great western games since they picked up Eidos.

What is awfully ironic to me is that, considering the cost of goods and inventory and shipping, contrasted with the freedom of digital downloads, Square stands to make a lot of money on mid-tier games on mobile devices with small team sizes akin to what they had during a generation back.

The trouble is, they are not capable of scaling back to that size of team, and are probably unable to open up their brands internally without a lot of political infighting over them.

They didn't, though. Not really.

There aren't any Japanese companies which really competed with the west on anything other than pre-rendered cinematics. Japanese companies have not invested in the tech or design which characterized progress this generation. Graphics, networking, user-interface...

Capcom and SE (Konami and MGS?) definitely tried to compete with the west on budget... and the results weren't pretty.
