That's my biggest takeaway from playing PS4. Last gen X360 and PS3 were pretty much the same systems. This gen they are even more so with the same type gpus/cpus and all that. There's really no point in owning both besides a dozen good exclusives they'll get throughout their lifespan.
Yet both take this niche market of "core" gamers and only divide it up even further. It makes so much sense next-gen for Sony & MS to put out a single console that's aimed at the 13-40 core gamer crowd and features all Sony & MS's 1st party IPs/dev teams. It'd do really well and third parties would be all for it because it'd be one less machine to optimize for and a bigger install base.
Ideally, in 5 years the perfect market for gaming to thrive would be:
Steam (PC)
vs.
Xbonestation
vs.
NintendoApple
A 3 way market would be healthy split and each would have their unique selling points. PC would still be the place for indie & freeware and certain genre + definitive 3rd party games, Xbonestation would have great versions of all 3rd party and tons of unique first party between Sony & MS studios, and NintendoApple machine would have Nintendo games + kids/casual. There's just absolutely no reason to split the market even further with two different MS & Sony machines. I know at first it seems like one of those pipe dream things, but at the end of the day it's actually REALLY LOGICAL and would be in the best interest for both MS and Sony to make more money, expand the core gaming market and MAKE MORE MONEY. Plus it'd be good for gamers since less stuff to buy and plug in. I think MS would probably be up for it but Sony is too proud of company to do it, so I dunno but hopefully someone can figure out how to convince Sony to do it.
