This album is so safe and so corporate. Just what the shit. It's so generic and I'm falling asleep. I'm not sure I can even finish it. I forgot it came out last week but I'm now listening to it on Spotify and I am so bored. Fame Monster and Born This Way shit on this.

Do what you want with R Kelley is like a perfect throw back 90s song. Fashion! is groovy. Sexxx Dreams is good. Dope is alright, was way better with the lyrics she performed at the iTunes festival thing. Aura is awesome, Venus is good beyond the opening part.

The production is awful and lacks the texture of Fame Monster or Born This Way. It is generic techno pop and lacks soul. It sounds like typical crap you'd hear at a gay bar. That random pop techno music they put on that you don't remember because it all blurs together.

Nothing comes close to Bloody Mary for instance in terms of production or vocals.

Fans did not dismiss BTW. BTW has its share of fans. It's a grower more than anything, and the fans liked the album, though it is far more mixed in terms of reception than TFM.

What makes the album so disappointing is that Born This Way showed a lot of progression and experimentation. It featured rock, aggressive production, and cinematic beats that separated itself from the rest of mainstream pop. It showed that Gaga could be more than just a typical pop princess that was steeped in the usual pop blueprint of trance and catchy hooks. This was shown in its production, vocals, and lyrical content. Artpop, by contrast is an exercise in excess: almost every song mentions drugs or sex ("I am super sexual and I want you to see me as a sex icon") and its production is sterile and forgettable, gone is the experimentation from Fame Monster and Born This Way.

Of course, The Fame is about being famous embracing stardom. She also bombed as Stefani and did an image change. Her entire image is just a mask of PR.

Shaka is right. Artists become icons, not the other way around. Gaga actively panders to the point of harming the community she holds a torch for.

See: her raiding a drag show, without notice, to film a random crappy lyrical music video for Applause, while they were doing their job. The camera men actively got in the drag queens' faces to show,"HEY! WE HAVE GAY PEOPLE AND cheeseburgers IN THIS VIDEO. SEE HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU?" Never mind the abortion of a song in Born This Way, and some of the lyrics on her latest album.

Other pop artists pay tribute to their gay fans; Gaga makes it a point to include them as if to pamper and pander to show she is in on the joke. It's like an artist realizing they have a big black fanbase, and includes watermelon and fried chicken and collard greens in because, hey, I got black fans and I'm in on it too.

1. she has a big lgbt fanbase
2. ALL pop stars have big lgbt fanbases
3. Gaga makes it a point to show that she recognizes her lgbt fanbase. There is nothing wrong with this in itself, however:
4. she has started to promote her material as if it is exclusively for lgbt people.

Popeyes is big with black people. You don't see Popeyes making marketing material as if to only include black people.

The problem is that she creates an inclusive environment for the sake of pandering. It's annoying and manipulative. Raiding a drag show in the middle of it unnoticed to record drag queens and cheeseburgers because she wants to "show her love for the community" is NOT cool. Let's call Popeyes the next time there's a gathering of black folks to show just how much we love our black customers!

Just playing Devil's advocate -- could it by be argued that while it may seem pandering, by doing so Gaga has brought a spotlight that has been progressive? I'm thinking of the work she did against Don't Ask Don't Tell. Not my place to decide I guess, but I would say on the whole she's been a positive force.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Her fans are passionate, excited, and gay. I see no problem with her catering to them. Pop in general has been catering to gay men and young girls for the last few years. This isn't like Popeyes or any other "chicken place," all of which have far more white customers than black customers, and thus appeal to multiple demographics. How many demographics care about Gaga or every other pop act except two (gay men+women).

With respect to the music, I'm sorry but MOST people I've observed who like good pop music didn't even like Born This Way, thought it was generic, didn't take chances compared to her earlier work, etc.

Born This Way is hardly generic. It is highly divisive however partly due to its experimentation. It has sounds from 80s hair metal, to rock ballads, to country. A big reason it isn't big on pop fans is because it wasn't a pure pop album and a departure for her from her early roots. Art pop is a direct response to Born This Way, by going back to more club oriented take. BTW wasn't perfect, there are songs I still skip, but I still love the ruthless dedication to.embracing different sounds and showing Gaga's vocal range.

Also, gotta love the subtle shade suggesting I don't like good pop music.

Born This Way sucked. A bloated, inconsistent mess. There were a few good ideas on there but far too many bad ones. It was a shame because The Fame Monster is actually a pretty great EP - stylistically diverse but everything worked. It was also about the length a pop record should be at around 35 minutes as opposed to 70+ for the Born This Way special edition.

As for the gay fans thing, she probably went too far there. Madonna always had a massive gay fan base without ever making her courting of that market overly explicit. The other thing Madonna always did well was reinvention. It might be time for Gaga to try her hand at that, as the current schtick seems a little dated.

the problem with lady gaga and why she will probably not make an album like TFM again anytime soon is that while you say ARTPOP is corporate it's actually not -- the problem is that now she has near-full creative control without an editor. she's surrounded by yes-men who don't really tell her what's good and what's not, which is why FARTPLOP is so full of filler and redundant songs.

one reviewer put it best that it's gone from "hey LOOK at me" to "hey look at ME" in terms of how she's presenting her music and herself

and based on this thread, it seems like most don't like Born This Way, as I said. I just find it odd to complain about a lack of innovation while championing a stale album.

Rap wise, it's like watching new generations of Lil Wayne fans shit on each new album. So the 16 year olds who like The Carter IV will shit on The Carter V, just as the 23 year olds who like The Carter III shat on The Carter IV. On and on, but at the end of the day they're arguing over turds.
