Best portable library (POLL)
« on: November 29, 2013, 02:31:54 PM »
I'm really tempted by the BF deals for Vita and 3DS.  However, Apple has stepped up its game and seems to have more titles with depth like games that are usually on consoles/PC.  There are also plenty of quick, simple games available for iPhone.

I'm really not fond of Apple products but there's shit to play on Android.  Even though I think my HTC one is a great phone, I'm seriously considering switching over to a iPhone 5s in a few months for gaming reasons.

Anyways, y'all know my gaming tastes so help a brother out.

IPhone. 3ds and vita are anti console in terms of library. IPhone has a lot more console esque games.

But if you want graphics, Vita. The problem with Vita is its lack of library. Hence why I suggest iphone.

Also, the new controller attachments for iPhone are making me way more interested in it as a gaming device.  I don't mind touch controls but I hate how most devs just lazily implement virtual joystick and buttons.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I consider Vita > 3DS > iOS. The lack of buttons makes most games horrible on the iPhone. The exceptions are turn-based genres or titles with really simple input like Tiny Wings or Super Hexagon.

This is pretty spot-on in terms of iOS.

If you like card-collecting games, turn-based strat, puzzle, turn-based rpg, sports sim. etc. Then it's the platform for you.

But if you are more into action-orientated fare, it's going to leave you pretty wanting.

Also, keep in mind that most controllers (made by reputable companies) are probably going to set you back an additional 70-100 dollars.

I think a lot of 3DS's value is overstated. I own one with about 12 games and most have been pretty underwhelming outside of Fire Emblem and Luigi's Mansion 2.

I'm not sure what this means. 3DS's biggest games this year were sequels to mostly console-oriented franchises.

I dunno. They just aren't the type of games I identify with consoles anymore.

Angry Birds is cheaper on the iPhone, if that helps.

The only one that's really debatable is Fire Emblem but it had more in common presentation-wise with the GC/Wii games than the previous handheld games. Not to mention RE Rev, KH 3D, Ocarina, etc. which were clearly console-calibre.

Guess I'll probably go with the iPhone and this,

http://store.apple.com/us/product/HE449ZM/A/moga-ace-power-game-controller

$100 is steep but it also seems to be more flexible and versatile than the Vita/3DS

Between the 3DS and Vita, I was leaning more to the 3DS even though I'm a big graphics whore.  I like how most 3DS games are not simply ported-down versions of console games.  Also, I like Zelda and Mario.  However, Nintendo's output is too slow and its few quality Mario/Zelda games won't last me more than a month.

If you're a graphics whore, then avoid the 3DS.  The 3DS looks like early era PSP graphics for reference.  Just look at Heruro's thread about best systems for the generation and see the video for the PSP.  Then look at the best 3DS games out there.  Not sure 2005 era graphics are your bag.

The Vita looks great but at this point, the only thing coming to the Vita after this year are Monster Hunter clones and indie titles.  Maybe the PS4 will breathe a second wind into it but we won't see the results of that for some time.

The iOS is the best bet.  The Moga and the Logitech controllers are the official iOS controllers so I could see a lot of games supporting it in the future.  Touchscreen gaming sucks ass but now that there is a clear direction to go for iOS gaming controllers, we should start to see more controller options in games.

I haven't said 3ds didn't have console esque games. But of the games I have - notably Animal Crossing, Shinobi, Thearhythm, SMT) are things I no longer associate with consoles. While LTTP 2 is a sequel to a console game it isn't the type of game Nintendo would put on consoles. Hence, anti console. The same is true for games like SMT4. I've been playing SMT titles portably for an entire generation. I don't associate it with consoles anymore. Theatrhythm? That would never be on console. Add in shit like Crimson Shroud and the rest of the Guild games.

I switched from iphone to android this year, and i really dont miss the games. Outside of a few exceptions, they were always more time killers than actual games

3DS has a better library, but the hardware (at least the OG model) feels like some high grade Cheapo China design or something. I just don't want to play games on that.

Obviously, I'm ignorant, so I'm just curious why you'd say that.

Games I'd consider console-esque on 3DS:

- KH 3D
- MHS 3D
- RE Rev
- MH3U
- Luigi's Mansion 2
- Mario Kart 7
- SM3DL
- Tales of the Abyss 3D
- Ocarina 3D
- Animal Crossing, if we're being honest very little has been handheld-ized from the GameCube game
- Fire Emblem is probably 50/50

You're right that LttP2 is more handheld-ish, and of course Pokemon is pretty handheld-focused.

I have a ipad 4th generation.  I bought it for $900 AUD.  I hate it.  You guys say it has good games but i cant see any that are that good.  All i see are b teir games.  3ds atleast has the ds library.  Infinite space is by far the best strat rpg game ever made atleast.

As I said before, I like Nintendo 1st party games.

JRPGs too but I'm not a big fan of Atlus.   Bravely Default is something I'm interested in but that's just one game.

IOS has a decent mix of JRPGs and WRPGs

Much larger collection than the 3DS but it doesn't seem to get as many new and exclusive games as the 3DS

Hmm, if you're not an Atlus fan you may be a bit out of luck. Non-Atlus RPGs I can think of off the top of my head are Mario & Luigi - Dream Team, Tales of the Abyss, Crimson Shroud (Matsuno e-shop pen-and-paper-esque game), and Heroes of Ruin. There's a ton of good Nintendo games though, Mario 3D Land is pretty ace in particular. Kid Icarus I didn't like but a lot of people seem to - the game has a TON of content and great production values, but the controls just did not work for me.

Vita may work out well for you too, since there are a few FPS games already (though I don't know how good they are), and can output some awesome graphics.
