Say goodbye to YouTube Let's Plays and guides everyone

Anyone make a living off this shit? What's this going to do to the more popular stuff like Total Biscuit and Gamer Grumps?

I personally find this shit so useful so I hope there isn't a massive decrease in them. They're perfect for games upure on the fence on.

The problem with this is that it can impact more than just gaming. Let's take the Young Turks, a political channel that shows footage from TV channels and makes money off of it. Would Fox News be in the right to request taking down ad support for TYT vids? The manner this could be abused is wide and could really ruin YouTube even further.

Thanks Google!

Google owns YouTube and should be trying to protect its users. Instead it seems to be actively waging war against them. Publishers and developers are in on it too, but the policies are all Google. Which is another fuck up from the ever hit and miss company.

Who the fuck IS pewdiepie exactly? I just found out about him from the gaf thread and searched him on YT.

And it isn't that they have to pay, I just have a problem with the draconian stuff. Because it fucks the under dog more than the Angry Joe's and Poopoodie's out there.

There's been problems the other way too, where the big media companies are trying to figure out how they can show things off YouTube. Fox News originally was just listing the username, but then they went to having to acquire permission to show clips because corporate wasn't sure what exactly is and isn't legal and fair use. (I don't know about other companies, I know the Fox stuff (and a local station that got into some unrelated to copyright trouble for showing stuff off YouTube) just because Red Eye explained why they weren't showing as many weird and extended YouTube clips anymore, especially anything that was like a clip from an obscure foreign show or ad or whatever.)

It's one of those situations where people just did whatever, and now others are coming along and having to figure out how exactly this is all supposed to work legally and some powers that be aren't content with allowing the "rules" that have been established just go on. The now added monetization factor is probably why it's seemed to be going quicker than it had been.

I was under the impression that to monetize gameplay footage you had to be a part of a Youtube network that would license the distribution rights from the publishers. I guess that's not the case.

From what I can tell a lot of the monetization stuff has been more in theory than in practice and some of this is rules finally being applied and confirmed. I can remember when the same kind of thing happened to Google Ads nearly ten years ago.

But I only have second hand knowledge from a few people who have been getting into it.

As long as boogie can keep making Francis videos, I should be ok.

(There are a couple of arpg youtube channels I subscribe to that might be affected by this, but those guys mostly all stream too so it won't be that big of a deal.  I like youtube videos because it often gives me concise info on a specific topic compared to the general "fuckaround" nature of a stream.)

Not to mention the streamer's schedule and the fact that there's nothing going on for long stretches sometimes.

Schedules is why I'm not big on streams. You can watch yt vids any time.

I also hope this makes more game makers create theatrical modes for their games. If people are watching nothing but cut scenes on yt.Maybe people who bought the game also want to reexperoemce the story without investing time in it. Add a mode that bundles all cut scenes and helps contain the games story. I will often watch a few.ff12 cut scene vids because I enjoy the writing and direction. I bought the game when it came out.

Criken is infinitely better than any of these shmucks and as far as I know he hasn't made a cent from his videos.  He's made a little from appearances I think though.

As long as Criken, Game Grumps, and Dodger (  :-[ ) aren't massively affected by this I'm okay with it

Sucks. I have a bunch of LP type stuff monetized and a few bits got caught on 3rd party music, one of which was just a bunch of police sirens that I guess sounded like a song? I dunno. One of the other people uploading to the channel got Hearthstone vids tagged by Blizzard though.

Only about 10-15ish vids out of over 300 so not too bad.

He goes off the deep end towards the end there... They don't need publishers? Some people who have stuff out now need the content they control. There's no denying that away.

Re: Say goodbye to YouTube Let's Plays and guides everyone
« Reply #44 on: December 11, 2013, 11:55:55 AM »
There needs to be a new mechanism so that both content owners and enthusiasts can monetise these videos. The people making them DO need an incentive to continue to do so... you would think that with the benefit potential of having their content out there, publishers would be okay with it, but I suppose not all such videos are complimentary. And I guess when the finance guys see literally millions of views going on each episode of something that relies on their content, they either want to monetise it or find a way to squeeze their own marketing in there.

There was nothing really wrong with the status quo IMO, but Youtube are forever signing up companies to ContentID matching in the hope they can incentivise paid membership and advertising, and acquire more legit media content as a result. In a post Hulu/Netflix world, Google could have a lot riding on the video services' legitimacy. Lets plays are an unusual category of production, the only real equivalent I can think of is movie-commentary stuff like RedLetterMedia videos - which are insanely popular. If this is happening to game content, why isn't it happening to movie content in the same way?

In any case, the matching mechanism is disturbingly good at picking out copyright content without any human intervention. I don't see why a user can't self-flag their video as containing IP, but carrying additional commentary or editorial. Allow users to throw their own ads in, and allow the content providers to throw one in too. The net result would be a choice of either - allowing just the publisher's ads to run before the video, or two/more ads in the same video. For the series that are quality, that people actually like, people would put up with it. They'd do the 5 second skip or whatever as necessary.

If I were involved in a channel like this (I'm not, but I know people who are) - I'd be trying to come up with a way around it. Perhaps breaking my out-of-game commentary into separate videos with my own ads, and maybe trying to encourage people to view via set playlists. I'd be looking at other video services too.

This seems like something most publishers will walk back from eventually (similar to online passes, does anyone use those anymore). The smart thing to do would to beat these guys at their own game. If piediedie hits 7 million views on a lets play, upload your own lets play with developer commentary, interviews and editing out major spoilers. Sony puts up a blog post each week with the PSN releases, why isn't someone on Twitch every Tuesday night showing everything off?

Just seems like it would be smarter to cut out the middle man (both press and regular youtubers/streams) by doing a better job then hiding behind youtube's TOS.

Some more info and context from a movie reviewer who's been dealing with Content ID for a while:

Disputing claims is a comical process.
