Mobile gaming in 2014
« on: December 09, 2013, 02:18:49 PM »
Whats your outlook folks?

Has mobile gaming been completely ruined by iap and f2p or is it still worthwile and there are good games coming out next year? It really seems to me like mobile gaming has taken a turn for the worse the last 2 years.

I havent played anything cool in a while on my phone.
Im wondering how long it will take for square to release stuff like bravely default on ios also.

What high water mark two years ago game-wise did we hit that we aren't hitting now?

"Are my expectations of what gaming is going to be met on this platform, or will I have to actually change the way I think, because I don't want to do that."

I dont think we hit some high, were just hitting so many lows with everything being f2p like Real Racing 3 which was such a great franchise now ruined.

(Skulls of the Shogun is an exemption)

There are plenty of bad free to play games that sully the model. Plants versus Zombies 2 is a game I was anticipating that was ruined imo by its f2p model.

But the more "core" games on the platform still tend to be set price games. So there is still plenty for me to enjoy there.

And there are still some free to play games with less obnoxious models that I find to be worth it.

Its easy to not care when all the new apps dont support your device.

Ooh a new game! Oh, doesnt work on my ipod. Oh well.

Xcom, Oceanhorn, Shadowrun, The Wolf Among Us, Sid Meier's Pacific Skies, Sorcery! 2 and a few other board/CCG games have been released in the past few months.

:shrug Seems okay to me.

Most of my play time has been eaten up by Skulls and Marvel Puzzle Quest.

I'm hoping that the smaller Windows 8.1 tablets will catch on (the Dell Venue 8 Pro is apparently selling very well), so we could see more devs incorporating touch controls into suitable games on Steam, etc.

Probably impossible to answer but do you think Xcom would be considered a success if it hadn't originally been released on three other platforms?

speaking of which, whatever happened to ghost recon 3ds coming to iOS? it was announced something like two years ago

It's a pretty good list for the past 2 months. There have been a half dozen other minor titles too if you know where to look.

Yea, you can play Skulls on Iphone 4, or 4th gen Touch. Not sure how it plays, I play on an Ipad.

Oscar take no offense to this but how the hell do you pad out a long ass review for a mobile game that has like one mode, i can't evne imagine how unfun it can be to review mobile games at times. i used to have trouble writing 6 pages for a fukkin hockey game on ps2

e; this is in no reference to skulls

I played Skulls on my iPhone 5s for that review I wrote.  It works great.

Thanks, mention that next time! One of your complaints was dragging thr units and I was worried that if that already was a problem on ipad on iphone it would be impossible :)

one of my previous GOTYs New Star Soccer has been a tad ruined by the recent balancing that , basically, just punishes you into oblivion.

My level 112 player is basically useless now as he's just leveling down constantly because the only way i could possibly generate enough cash for energy boosts and trainers etc is to IAP. I know this is now part of the game in regards to knowing when your player is past it, but but but FUN IS THE LOSER, BRIAN!

I started a new game and it's a bit better, but already it's forcing me down a path that the earlier versions did not : I cannot generate cash fast enough to balance my energy or my life so my player is miserable, but still leveling up - that's pushing my costs up higher and... yeah - vicious circle :/ Whilst the game definitely needed some level of refinement the recent changes have somewhat soured the games appeal.

(play time : played 1539 games, 1564 goals scored - 28 seasons played)

Is 2014 the year SE finally starts remaking/enhancing their PS1 catalog for mobile ??? FF VI is coming, there is no where else for them to go. I could go for a enhanced version of Vagrant Story :drool

If that Wind Waker style game comes to android I'll probably check it out.
