BF really wanted to watch the first on Netflix, so we did. Nothing happened. Told him I'm not seeing it till the rest come out. Shit's ridiculous. Nothing happens storywise and in true Jackson fashion everything is ridiculously saturated and everything is EPIC TO THE MAX. I hate these films. They bore me.

9 hours, three movies. Can't support it, sorry. And I'm a fan of Jackson.

Saw it today.

Better then the first, still too much filler.

There is a boring action sequence that lasts like 10 min too.

Smaug is cool.

Epic music every 30 seconds.

Haven't seen it yet. First one was first Jackson film I haven't liked. Would have saw it with Mups if I had taken his movie ticket offer the other day but I was busy.

is it good though mupepe

the first one was straight w/me
its a more refined version of the first. It accomplishes what it was going for much better. So if you liked the first you'll dig this one. I liked it, but I had gripes mainly because of the book. But on its own merits and legs its better than the first

My review from the movies you've seen recently thread. And over the last few days thinking back I've quite warmed up to it even more...

Saw The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug last night...

I'm so fucking torn.  It was a good movie in its own right.  But you can really see in this one where they're stretching themselves thin for 3 movies.  Though I honestly believe if you're not familiar with the book it won't bother you or you won't care.  But so much of it is so unnecessary and they skip over things in the book that they actually could have expanded upon for just completely made up portions of the story.  It got a great reaction from the crowd though.  Smaug was really, really well done.  His voice, the animation, his design.  Incredible.  They brought him to life better than I could have imagined.  The pacing is uneven.  But it's PJ so is anyone surprised?  But even with that everything is extremely well done and interesting.  If you liked the first Hobbit you'll like this one.  Oh and the ending is a cliff hanger cock tease of epic fucking proportions.  If I didn't know what happened in the book I'd be fucking pissed.  I couldn't believe where they ended the movie.  No resolution whatsoever for any of the story arcs.

So in short:

+Gorgeous movie
+Smaug is fucking incredible
+Nerd porn through and through
+Fun adventure
+Bombur is more than a joke in this one and redeems himself

-Uneven pacing
-Cliff hanger/awkward ending
-Rapes the fuck out of the book

Since I'm sure someone will ask. Here are some spoilers...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
They go through so much effort to shoehorn in a really unnecessary love story.  That's probably the most offensive part of all the added shit.  And they end the movie with Smaug flying to Lake Town.  But this is after a thirty minute chase through Erebor where they run in circles and eventually cover Smaug with melted gold and really do nothing.  It's a pointless chase, but it's pretty to look at.

Any reports on if HFD + 3D work better in this film?  Many people complained that HFR made the 1st look unrealistic.

yeah the HFR is divisive, yet I love it.  People who say it looks unrealistic are fools.  It makes it look much more lifelike.  The only thing "unrealistic" about it is that it definitely highlights whats CG and what's not, moreso than regular frame rate

Saw this earlier in HFR. Smaug himself looks amazing. Best scenes in the movie.

Much faster pace but by god the silly 'love' story was so,so forced.

Really liked Luke Evans in this.

Like Riddles in the Dark, the scene with Smaug and Bilbo stole the show. Great characterization by Cumberbitch as Smaug. He brought a lot of life and was able to tell us a lot about the character in a very small amount of time. He wasn't some overly clever villain like we're used to. I like how he's made out to be vain and narcissistic and that ends up being his downfall.

Rest of the movie was pretty cool overall as well.

Rather liked the way they "revealed" who the Necromancer was.

The only impressions of the first Hobbit that made me want to see it were the ones on this forum describing it as "the good kind of boring" and basically an uber-dorkfest. That sounded kind of appealing, especially combined with the kvetching likening the effect of HFR with old BBC shows (so, where's the downside?) but I still didn't see it.

heres every chapter in lotr:

"as the crossed the top of the hill, they say the mountains looming in the distance to their east. to the north were many smaller rolling hills as far as the eye could see. behind them lay the long as twisted pathway, covered by dark trees and brambles that had terrified them so. to the south lay a smaller mountain range with storclouds overhead." just like that except that it would be THIRTY FUCKING PAGES LONG. then put in like one inconsequential conversation. repeat for the whole goddamn trilogy. i remember the final walk to mount doom was like fifty pages of " everything around them was dead, and they were thirsty and starving and it was really dry and shitty out." GOD DAMN IT WAS SO BORING

as far as the books go, in lotr they spent way too much time on bullshit; in the hobbit they breezed through all kinds of major shit. lotr movies trimmed a lot, hobbit expanded on a lot. the first hobbit movie to me didnt feel stretched out at all. would recommend seeing it.

The Hobbit book isn't nearly as descriptive as LOTR though, it moves rather quickly.

and so when they elaborate on important shit that was kind of breezed thru in the books (like meeting the elves for example) and add in backstory that was included in the lotr books, then you get enough material for the movies

Jesus no longer these movies are so fucking long sooooo much filler trash! luckily I got some free tickets for this shit, that ending would have pissed me off a lot if I paid for this movie.

I had a couple of drinks before so the first couple of minutes literally put me to sleep, when I woke up some dwarf was talking some bullshit with a hot elf and for some reason they decided to give this dwarf and his stupid arrow wound like 20 minutes of screen time, "yeah let's cut to some dwarf holding hands with an elf no one wants to see this awesome dragon anyway", also Gandalfs ridiculous quest to reveal that the great evil gathering power in the LOTR prequel is the villian from LOTR :sabu, and the movie didn't even have an ending! fuck Jackson and WB and I actually liked the first one.

Also one of my mates never saw the first one and he asked me to catch him up on the story, I ended up saying something like: "a hobbit goes with a dwarf king and his subjects to steal a stone from a dragon in the dwarf's old kingdom and he finds the ring in a cave", really couldn't think of anything else that he needed to know from the first three fucking hours "epic" part of the trilogy

My friend convinced me to watch this over anchorman 2 and it was actually the first time I've seen a 3D HFR movie (and like a decade since I've been in an imax theater).

Now I haven't seen the first but he caught me up on how the dwarven families are reuniting and essentially it's a big heist film. Watching it, I thought it was pretty fun although there was absolutely no character development and it was very blunt about who's good and evil. But the high framerate and 3D and set pieces in general kept me interested and I don't think I fell asleep once, unlike every LOTR movie.

Then the ending of the movie came right in the middle of the big climactic battle. Like literally it just suddenly ended and the lights in the theater turned on. I was so pissed off, should have watched anchorman 2.
