I mean, Sony's still making Vitas for some reason. So I'm going to say after whenever Sony stops.

Yeah, gonna go with a reasonably unreasonable 2015 as well.

Atleast 2016 because they are still announcing games for it if they havent stopped already.  But if it makes it to 2016 it will see a big boost in sales because they should be able to drop the price to $200.

2015.  You don't need to still be producing hardware to make software.  If the channels and warehouses are full and the hardware ain't moving very fast, there's no need to keep the factories pumping them out.
Oh yeah, like how they stopped making Gamecubes for a while cause the warehouses were all full...

How long does Nintendo have left in general? Unless they do some rapid reorganization and change focus to adapt to the times, I'm gonna say five years. They have some cultural cache to rely on, but they're no Disney. If they're not producing, they're coming up on that irrelevancy wall pretty fast.

Same could be said for the other two.  Since kids start with the ipads and such they arent going to go for the ps5 or Xtwo when they grow older...

MS has successfully developed a service that people want to use to play their Call of Bro games. That will keep them relevant longer than nintards will keep Nintendo in the home console business.

Both MS and Sony have their fingers in other areas of tech and services besides video games. With or without video games, those companies will survive. If Nintendo isn't producing video games that make money for them, they're absolutely fucked.

MS yeah i dont see Windows dying soon even with the colossal fuck up of the Win 8 os.  But isnt Sony's electronics in a bad place at the moment?  I guess their movies will keep them afloat?

Well, I'm not saying any of them will dominate, or even thrive. I have no real dog in this debate. I do think MS is gonna make a decent comeback in the tablet space over the next few years. They'll never overtake iOS or Android, but this time next year it's a real possibility that you'll see $199 full Windows tablets with support for legacy software and Office packed in, and I believe that'll help them carve out a decent market share in that area. They're a services company, and it looks like they're beginning to get their shit together as to where they're headed in the future. Sony as a company has a lot of branches, and a crazy vast library of music/movies/TV to fall back on even if their hardware lines sag. They've done a pretty good job of shoring up their resources over the last couple of years.

I don't hate Nintendo. Their games aren't my cup, but I do recognize and respect the craft.  But video games are all they've got. There's no Nintendo music service. There are no Nintendo movie studios. There is no Nintendo OS to license out. There are no Nintendo services, in other words. If they're not making money off video games and console/handheld hardware, they're done.  I think they have about a two year window to still be able to pull off some sort of Nintendo tablet, with a curated app store and exclusive games, sort of like Amazon's Kindle branch. I think it would do pretty well for them, and be regarded as the go-to for the "safe," family-oriented tablet/apps market. Tech shit moves so fast, though, that if they miss that 2-3 year window they might never be able to catch up and cut a profitable piece.

2017, 2016 at the absolute earliest.

Nintendo's strategy in the past has been to keep pinching out Mario games.  I suspect this is going to be their MO from 2014 on.  So get ready for Mario Kart 8, Mario Golf U, Mario Tennis U, Mario Baseball U, Mario Sunshine HD, Mario Galaxy 3, Mario Strikers U, Luigi's Mansion 3, and I wouldn't be surprised if they make a Super Mario 64 HD since the DS version sold over 10 million copies.

So if you really, really, really love Mario, this is going to be the system for you!

The biggest issue with Nintendo is that they will never compete with Sony or Microsoft.  Those two companies are just too huge and can make large investments in a way that Nintendo never will be able to do.  Nintendo has that reserve of cash Nintards are oh so fond of talking about but I can't see them dipping into it significantly to make a Wii U 2 that would be stand toe to toe with PS4 and Xbone.  I think Nintendo ultimately has the right idea with going down their own path but they need to find ways to make that path work.  Nintendo's current strategy of "Low end hardware + gimmick sold at a premium price" crashed and burned with the Wii U and the 3DS for the most part.  I think Nintendo as it is needs to have two streams of revenue (console and handheld) to really survive so I think going handheld only is a bad idea unless they pare down operations.

Real answer, I think 2016 is likely. Their next device will be some kind of convergence device with a handheld focus, succeeding both 3DS and Wii U. The 3DS has already gotten tons of games that wouldn't be out of place on a home console (like Luigi's Mansion 2.) This'll also let them unify their digital services without doing any actual work. I just can't see Nintendo stomaching the Xbone/PS4-level budgets with an actual Wii U successor, so they'll probably ride out PS3/360-level power and get away with it as it's a handheld-oriented device.

There's an outside chance of a PS Vita TV/Roku-like device as well, with the same PS360 level power in a small all-digital form factor. We'll see. No one expected the Wiimote.

I have told you people again and again. You will be made to care.

Microsoft preaches tolerance until it is dominant and then it seeks to silence whimsy. Iwata, CEO of Nintendo, honestly answered questions during an interview with Famitsu. He spoke openly of the Wii U's future. Because he offended dudebros at war with Nintendo Whimsy, he must be punished.

Microsoft and Iwata both chose to put their respective faiths ahead of profits.

What we should not shy away from is that Iwata articulated hardcore gameplay doctrine. He referenced real gaming. Call of Duty is, in fact, shitty according to hardcore gamers. And as gamers society begins to openly tolerate cinematic, dudebro games that really are not really hardcore games, gamer society tends to start loosening up across the board as it descends down a slippery slope.

Iwata has spoke to Nfans, and told them to support true gaming experiences and not just become a troll, as Xboners do. As Shigeru Miyamoto has said,

Our gaming culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s console choice, you must attack and troll them. The second is that to be a hardcore gamer you have to own all consoles. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be a hardcore gamer.

The casual dudebros believes otherwise. NeoGAF poster Wilson Cruz, in a laughably ridiculous statement, responded to Iwata by saying, “Iwata and his company claim to be creating hardcore gaming experiences, but Iwata’s lies about FPSs fly in the face of what true hardcore gamers believe.”

Actually, Iwata said precisely what true hardcore gamers believe and anyone, including Microsoft, letting NeoGAF be an arbiter of true hardcore gaming is pretty quickly destined for the shit bit.

NeoGAF has now joined much of mass market culture in the US in picking sides in a fight — tolerance for gaming culture, but not for Nfans expressing honest answers to questions asked of their company. The only surprise is that the Nfans of NeoGAF could last there as long as they did. NeoGAF has as much right to do this as you have to go to a different forum. But they have clearly aligned themselves against us in the console wars.

The world is at war with Nintendo and those who put their faith in Nintendo. The silver lining of this act is that many Nfans who decided they could sit on the sidelines and not have to care will have a wake up call — particularly casual Nfans.

Nintendo, however, must show it will stand with those who stand with Wii U and not shy away from this fight lest too many weak and new Nfans go wobbly and silent.

You will be made to care. You will not be given the option of silence or the sidelines.

They probably stopped greenlighting new Wii U games already. I still think they're either going handheld only w/ TV out, or negotiating with AMD for an x86 console.

What I hope happens for maximum troll is an AMD x86 console that one-ups Xbone graphically and costs like $300. :P

and they've apparently now merged Console dev into handheld dev at Nintendo towers - i'm pretty sure they're going to move to a "one platform" system next.

Nintendo consoles aren't about the power so why not just have hdmi out and controller support and have the machine playable on a big screen when you are at home?

Smart move.

Going into teraflop/online battle with Sony/MS would be silly.Nothing stopping them from making multiple versions of it(see smartphones, tablets).

But hopefully Iwata is fired in 2014. :phil

Doubtful.

I only want X and Bayonetta 2. Bayo will hopefully be out by 2014 and X I bet is a 2015 title. By 2015 I don't see the logic on spending anything more then $200 on the kind of hardware the Wii U is.

And honestly those two games, I'm unsure if they are even worth the money.

Bayonetta was a great game, but I may have had my full of it. It reminds to be seen if Bayo 2 will be as good. It will probably be good. but $200 good?

X, well I'm pretty cautious about X. Xenoblade was great, best game this gen without a doubt. But I'm worried that X will have some MH esque gameplay. The only gameplay trailer shown so far could easily go both ways. That of a MH influenced rpg or of a full blown single player rpg. If you like MH, cool but I don't want that in my single player rpg.

Really at this point its a wait and see on how those two games will be received. I like the character action genre, but it's not my favorite and Bayo 2 will not be a system seller for me. X would be, but it has to basically be as good as Xenoblade.

Outside of those two games at present I don't see anything justifying the WiiU. Wonderful 101 sure looks decent, but nothing I need to play.

Next year - a lessened PS360 focus, $199-250, Mario Kart, Zelda and possibly online X - will give it a temporary stay of execution in US / Japan IMO. I even think upgradeability will mean it will age way better than Wii / Gamecube in terms of software experience, and maybe pick up a little in perception elsewhere. Its not impossible to do a 3DS on this thing, its just very very hard.

Not only is it dead in the UK, Nintendo are dead in the UK. No retail presence at all. Way worse than the Gamecube / GBA days. They'll need to do some serious necromancing if they wanna recover here.
