2013 was a pretty seminal year for me, and one that I'll consider a turning point in the future, as I see it. Looking back on the year, what surprises me a lot is how much I learned from you good people on this forum.
Van Cruncheon: Really opened my eyes to how much of my male-privilege and white-privilege I take for granted. Forced me to confront the fact that I still held a lot of entitled and misogynistic views, even if many of them were subconscious.
The Business: Made me think a lot more about how badly I'd treated a lot of the people I interact with. Made me consider the meaning of being a gentleman.
Himu: Made me realize that I was actually pretty transphobic a lot of the time. Opened my eyes to trans issues.
Positive Touch: Showed me how much of a douchebag I was being about thinking I know what's best for other people and being willing to take essential freedoms away from people in the name of creating a "better society." Didn't beat around the bush about how douchey that actually was, which, while difficult to deal with at the time, was really what I needed to hear.
Wrath: Constantly held me accountable for my bullshit. Called me out for having a "god complex", which I totally did, and have had for years. Showed me that I really am not nearly as knowledgeable as I thought I was. Along with Esch, also turned me on to some really good music.
Devolution: Like Van Cruncheon, a constant reminder of how much privilege really exists and how much I've benefited from it.
Triumph: Despite the gruff exterior, really a kind person at heart. Definitely drove me to try to be more like him in this aspect.
Mandark: Essentially a far superior version of me. Doesn't give in to emotional arguments, maintains rationality at all times, and doesn't spout off on stuff he doesn't know much about until he's done plenty of research. This is how I'd like to be able to debate people eventually.
Shaka: Such an open and accepting person who makes everyone love him through kindness. Really makes me want to improve myself in this regard.
I think at this point I'm a much better human being than I was at the beginning of the year, and it's really amazing how much of it is due to ya'll. I sincerely thank you for that. Hope you guys have a great holiday season.
