You should definitely move to a cold Nordic country with little sunlight if you're feeling depressed in the dead of winter :derp

winter's my favorite season.

How would a black man be greeted in Sweden? I might move in with Fistfull.
Depending on your personality but a lot of people would want to talk to you about America and what you think of Sweden when they are drunk. People will probably thinks its fun to talk to you. Here is a guy who is black and he makes a lot of funny videos about his stay in Sweden:

I heard legally immigrating into those countries is a bitch: you either need to have a job in that country prior to immigrating or marry a native.

Anecdotal evidence, of course, but the Swedish au-pairs I know have a thing for black guys...

Fistful, I would suggest you 'start small'... maybe move to a different part of the US first instead of emigrating. I definitely agree with what demi said, 4 years in Buffalo was enough for me to want to get the hell out and back to fucking Long Island of all places...

Fistful - there's an app/website called memrise. That's what my husband and I have been using to learn basic Swedish, and for me to brush up on German. Kinda fun. You "plant seeds" and "water them." Seeds being words/phrases. And people can upload pics that help remind them. For instance the phrase for "we want to smoke" is something like "vi vill roka" so somebody put a photo of Queen referencing "we will rock you."

So Fistful why not go travelling first instead of emigrating? Thats so drastic.

By the way, if you feel unhappy talk to a psychiatrist. It won't hurt. You might have some kind of depression even if you do not feel ''sad''. I think you know what I mean. It doesn't hurt and if you find an antidepressant that works for you you might find joy again in what you do.  :)

While I wouldnt say going to shrink is a bad idea, it shouldn't be the first option if you don't like your life.

You should try to do something yourself to change it.

Hehe. So how much do you actually know about Sweden? What's the depth of your research, here? Pretty sure we're at least as bad as Buffalo
I have watched these two videos:

Pretty sure I'm all set. I hope to re-open the Statens institut för rasbiologi as that field of study has been neglected for the last 65+ years for some odd reason.

First steps taken:

-Consolidating debt. Transferring credit card debt to single card, lowering payments. Lowering payments on student loans. Transferring money saved to savings account with additional money.
-All required documentation for passport obtained, appointment setup for passport application.

But if I were to move and I solidified a place, I would hire a professional to teach me.

How would you pay this? What kind of job can someone get in a foreign country when they don't speak the native language?

Sweden, last I checked, is completely fine with you rolling with English depending on the area and job.

Honestly, I don't think this will solve your unhappiness Fistful. Changing scene is nice and all, but if you're unhappy with yourself or something like that changing the scenery isn't going to solve that.

Right now, it's about 40F warmer in Sweden, and I leave my house and get home in the dark all but maybe 3 months of the year. And I live further south than fistful. It'd be a step up!

Buy a lot of vitamin D tablets, no joke.

If you go far far up in Sweden your life will looks more like this, a lot of indoor activities but it will be fun if you find your group of people.

You get used to the cold. The darkness is more difficult. Make sure you take a walk outside whenever you see the sun shining during the winter months.

After 25 years I'll be moving out on my own in the next three weeks or so.

I recently applied and accepted a job in Rochester NY and I'm going out tomorrow to look for an apartment. If all goes as planned by the first week of March I'll be moving my shit into my new place.

So it's not Sweden, but it's a step in that direction.

You're close enough that you'll be able to go meet up with people whenever, but also far away enough that you can keep people away if you need to.  Best of both worlds!

Were you living with family all this time?  Is this your first time living by yourself?  Could definitely be all that you needed.
