Also, I have ticked the box for allowing people to change their vote in the event that more garbage gets added to this pointless poll.

I only voted for four options so you should add Android-based microconsoles as a choice.

can we expand this to "the deification of any game with focus on narrative and/or some sort of tear jerker moment"

More people voted Wii U than actually own one on this board I think

I voted Gearbox, No HL3, IAP, the Console Industry not crashing (but really I mean AAA), and Neogaf

I would probably replace No HL3 with one of these two if I could change my vote:

  • People acting like Bioshock Infinite and TLOU are life-changing experiences
  • Games that are decent fun but people act like they're unredeemable garbage

I would add Steam early access hoopla from the side of the press. Yes, it could be better communicated, yes, there is potential for abuse, but they forget that it can change a game for the better as well. You don't even get that with Kickstarter. It's a storm in a teacup, but it's one of the few things that successfully filtered through my caring algorithms.

My choices:
- David Cage, for hammering home yet again that the wrong people get big budgets
- Polls that have things from the wrong year, in lieu of everything that's missing (BF4 limped onto shelves in 2013, Xbox 180(s), whatever else I'm forgetting...)
- Binfinite and Last of Us. Less so LoU, becuase it seems to be telling its story smartly from everything I've heard.
- OUYA, because of course
- HL3, because I want to know what happens :fbm

#1 sony releasing a buggy, mediocre spec device with a shitshow of a library, gutted features and paid online and still getting internet-wide fellatio due to being better than the binary alternative.

#2 those bit-coin fuckers driving GPU prices up just as they were getting sweet again/20nm no show.

#3 big anticipated PC games coming out as either just disappointing (company of heroes 2) or super wack (rome 2, x: stillbirth, sim city).

and just for 2014:

#1 people suddenly being excited about the garbage experience which is cloud streaming.

#2 valve's steam machine coming out party at CES being the wettest fart since neptune bought a butt-plug.

#3 the amount of time i spent making this list.

I don't hate TLoU, I just hate the response to it. Kinda like Christopher Nolan films. They're good, but not the greatest thing ever.

Never played Infinite, so I can't speak for it.

If I was to pick one worst of 2013 for me it was critics rushing to praise any and every indie game as the best thing since sliced bread and see who can out hip each other. It continues to amaze me how people stop suddenly being critical of games when they are playing the 7th roguelike of the month or art pieces like The Stanley Parable (which is a fine enough thing for what it is but c'mon) suddenly are considered the best games of the year.

Because Spelunky > whatever shooter came out that year

Guacamelee is great too.

Just like indie games more and appeal to my tastes than some bloated game. It's a feat I liked GTAV so much.

Litecoin is the crypto-currency responsible for the recent shortages. The more coins that are already mined (there's a finite amount), the harder it becomes to mine more. Bitcoin are at a point where people designed and sell ASICs made specifically to mine them. It's bananas.
Litecoin is still at the stage where GPUs can make you money, hence the run on them.

I'd say the GCW-Zero, but that can be classified under "Kickstarter."  The horrible d-pad is enough for it get "shit" status, but worse than that is the way distribution of the handheld was handled- there are still some people without these things.

Stanley Parable was amazing.

It's a nice enough. Fun enough. Little meta commentary on games. I spent an enjoyable couple of hours with it on a lazy afternoon before I got bored.  And that's fine.

"Amazing" would be nowhere near my vocabulary in describing it but different strokes.

1) Games journalism - Whether it's clickbait controversy they generated for no reason, whether it is desperate attempts to legitimize their hobby (and thus, their life choices) by talking about how deep storylines in video games are, gaming journalism hit a new low this year, much lower than the previous shit record of games journalism in 2012.  It seems that as gaming journalism is the least useful, you see more annoying attempts to try to claw their way into maintaining relevancy.  This new generation with streaming and uploading videos are going to strangle the industry further.  That means better get used to more hyperbole, more outrage, and more indie game dick sucking for 2014.

2) Wii U - Nintendo completely pissed away their year head start.  PS4 will pass its LTD in January and the Bone will pass the LTD either in February or March.  It is almost impressive to see how badly they fucked up.  Mario 3D World is good but this was the launch game people wanted, not NSMBU, which badly needed a break, or Nintendoland, which is shit.

3) Xbox One - While Microsoft backtracked on most of it, the Xbox One development was one clusterfuck after another; the end result is a system that costs $100 more than the PS4 with weaker specs.  I believe Microsoft will drop the Bone to $399 in a couple of months.  The whole thing sounds like it is worthy of a book to be written.  Maybe get Dean Takahashi to write it or something.

4) Nintendo - Yep, they're up here a second time.  Nintendo's tone deafness is really costing them.  However, this isn't anything new as notoriously ninspergy writer Emily Rogers wrote about the Gamecube that shows that Nintendo's incompetency in 2013 isn't anything new: http://www.dromble.com/2014/01/07/dolphin-tale-story-of-gamecube/

5) Ouya - A byproduct of indie cocksucking and Kickstarter cocksucking.  The CEO, Julie Uhrman, comes off as the sleaziest, shadiest used car salesman around.  The controller sucks, not all Kickstarter backers have yet to receive their Ouya (not that they'd want it now), and seems patched together with duct tape.  The open universe ya (no shit, that is the name breakdown) is surprisingly closed and Ouya was never able to articulate just why indie developers should develop for it.  News reports come out about how 70% of owners never actually buy a game on it.  I feel sorry for the $8 million in Kickstarter money + $16 million in venture capital that was pissed away on this joke.

Stanley Parable was amazing.

Some of the lamest shit of the year (I guess this falls under NeoGAF) was that  hilarious backlash and back and forth on message boards and feminist bloggers getting furious about people questioning the way games portray women; Dragons Crown, Bravely Default, Dota 2, etc etc etc. Just  ::) . Censorship debates, 'ephebophiles' furious about their waifus being censored, just a fucking mess.

I did like seeing all the conspiracy theories and freak-outs pop up about Anita Sarkeesian.   :lol

Although some of them did hold some water- she used footage from other people's videos and then there was this supposed "scandal:"

Quote
More important is her own attempts at making quick money through telemarketing and her link to Jonathan Mcintosh (her boyfriend), who Anongamer implies may be the one really pulling the strings on the Tropes Vs Women videos for his own personal gain.

There is a video this guy found of her at one of these marketing seminars, too.  But the whole thing is ridiculous and stalker-ish.

I loved Bioshock Infinite, and I really liked The Last Of Us. Well, I did when I played them. Now I can't help but hate them due how distinguished mentally-challenged the gaming fanbase has become when either of them are mentioned. While BI was the most annoying one when it first came out, Last Of Us is the most annoying one by far now. It peaked with Joel Banderas, the fucking glee that showed up with that reveal where no new game was announced boggled me. It's a videogame you've already played, not a new game reveal. And it was showed off parodying an overused meme which you'd think would have these nerdlingers crying about how it doesn't fit the "emotion" of the game. This sort of shit makes me not want to touch either game ever again, despite enjoying them.
