Valve + Oculus Rift = Your Dreams Come True
« on: January 16, 2014, 10:14:13 PM »
Valve’s vision of your PC gaming future would seem to entail the most complicated web of hardware ever devised. On one side, Valve has an entrenched digital sales platform pointed at the typical Windows gaming crowd. But on the other side, the company is pushing those crazy, living room-oriented Steam Machines, which are aimed at more mainstream console gamers.

And then there’s Valve’s relationship with virtual reality—and it came to a head Thursday at the Steam Dev Days conference in Seattle. Twitter is now abuzz with developers discussing Valve’s virtual reality prototype. It doesn’t yet have a name. Or even specs. But when Valve talks hardware, people perk up and listen.

Valve’s VR demo at #SteamDevDays  felt like being in a lucid dream state and very much like a holo deck #mindblown #vr

It’s going to be hard to go back to my #oculus dev kit after experiencing #valve’s #vr demo. Kinda like playing an xbox then 8bit Nintendo

I am very skeptical about the OR's potential for success

but deep down I hope with every fiber of my being that it catches on like wildfire and completely changes the industry.

it still feels like it is much too soon for this technology to take hold though

Most of this is pretty old news at this point but one thing I noticed is that Valve seemed to emphasize 2015 as the launch date for VR on PC while previously it seemed implied that Oculus would likely have a consumer model out sometime this year. Not sure what to make of that.

Plans for the rift changed, I think.  There will be another rev unit with the positional tracking and probably 1080p.  iirc their method isn't finalized.  The latest model at ces had a camera tracking dots on the visor.

If it's 2015 maybe it is bundled with ricochet 2

too soon? we're essentially still playing iterations of game designs from the best part of twenty years ago in the same way we played games the best part of twenty years ago.

I've seen the Valve VR demo and you can absolutely believe the hype.

I have no context for Valve in the hardware world and I've never been bowled over by their software (out of the box). So, I'm pretty skeptical about anything they do.

YES. I'll never have to hear my friends bitch about "controls" again.

Yup.  I'll try it, but fuck wearing anything like this for any amount of time.

I don't like people wearing shit on their heads. I saw some guy at the airport the other day, a foreigner in Japan, wearing Google Glass.

Is there a word other than "douchenozzle" for these guys? "Glassholes"?

It's not like you have to wear the Oculus Rift on your head out in public.

No, but it will likely get uncomfortable after about half an hour.  Again, it's a really neat idea, but most people don't like wearing things strapped to their faces or heads unless they have to.

Yeah, even the comfiest Headphones will make themselves felt after a while. I guess it's only a problem for people with habits like mine, where I play for hours without a break (if I can help it).
