Southeast Snowpocalypse
« on: January 29, 2014, 07:36:47 AM »
So who is being affected by the snow/ice 'storm' in the southeast right now?  Atlanta has pretty much shut down...roads are empty and a lot of highways have closed.  I got lucky and went home yesterday after all the problems with the trains were fixed, but my wife drives and what normally takes 45 minutes took her six hours to get home.

Looks like we had about 1.5 inches here in the immediate vicinity. Everything is shut down and quiet, I'm not working, about to dive into some pancakes and sausage, all is well.

The funny/scary part is going to be tomorrow. None of this shit is gonna melt today, and it's gonna hit 10 degrees tonight. Everyone probably thinks they're just going to jump in their cars and zoom into work tomorrow morning because it isn't snowing, but nope.

We got several inches in the mountains of Western NC. It's not going to get above freezing here today either, ugh. Also, since I work from home I have to work tonight. :fbm

dead in the water here in the triangle until thursday afternoon, it looks like. nothing's thawing until then.

interstate/highway travel is OK provided you are just driving through. the exit ramps look hellish and suburban/neighborhood roads are suicide right now.

Protip: If you put salt on the roads, the snow/ice will melt. Good tires are as important as brakes.

Did any weather station down there say it was going to snow?

I'm working from home today too.  First time for that, actually, and it sucks-- guess it's my Internet to blame, but it's so slow and I can only get the remote session to display on one monitor.  Oh well, done at 4:30 and because of problems getting connected, I didn't end up starting until like 10:45.

Did any weather station down there say it was going to snow?

Of course they did- the problem is that nobody is prepared.  NOBODY.

Yeah. The problem is that the people in a position to do anything about it didn't heed the warnings. Also, the warnings didn't come in until about 4 am, and by that point, probably no one was up paying attention to shit, so in 3 hours buses rolled out to pick up kids for school, no one told people not to commute to work, etc. It's a failing in how the decision makers (politicians, bureaucrats) receive, process and act on information, not a failing of the people whose job it is to provide that information.

Quote
We still have challenges in how weather information is consumed, interpreted, or viewed by policymakers and decision-makers. This is ultimately the root of the Atlanta mess from Tuesday, in my view. I don’t believe “anyone” is necessarily to blame. The situation simply points out that we still have challenges in communicating across the science-decisionmaker-public “gap.”

edit: also, they closed all the schools and sent everyone home AT THE SAME TIME, creating a huge fucking traffic jam.

Everything is pretty much back to normal today.   :heh

Half the office still called out.   :gurl

And most of them refused to work remotely, citing "no Internet connections."  :comeon

Atlanta is freaking out again over reports of some snowfall tomorrow and/or Wednesday.   :lol

At least time they're claiming to be "prepared," which I doubt.

Not a lot of snow where I am, but plenty of ice.  Everyone pretty much stayed home this time.  Have seen a few people walking around and a couple of cars drive by, which is weird since everything is shut down.  Where are they going?

The trains have been running all day, but I stayed home for two reasons.  One, because the parking lot I need to cross to get to the station looks like an ice rink, and two, because I don't trust the train system here and expect shit to happen later today.  I see that they have already been posting delay after delay with the trains running right now.  Was afraid I might get stuck somewhere and dumped off at some random station on the line.

There's no sun out so it doesn't seem like things are going to be any better tomorrow.  The apartment complex has been sending messages out that the sidewalks are iced over and not to even try getting out of the gates in cars.  Feel totally stuck, but I guess that's OK since we have plenty of food and the power is still on (knock on wood).

Ice is pretty thick on the trees around here, every few minutes we'll hear limbs pop and break off. Roads don't seem to be too bad, mostly water and a little slush. Power keeps blinking off, so I don't want to turn on the PC or PS4 and risk any file corruption or whatever. Power is out in areas all around us, so it's probably gonna take ours out for good sometime today :(

Of course, it's supposed to creep up to 40 tonight, so it'll mostly be gone by morning.

WTF happened in Charlotte?  Photos make it look like Atlanta was two weeks ago.  How the fuck did nobody prepare after what happened before?   :dizzy

No idea what's going to happen here tomorrow.  Last time I popped outside, it was all frozen rain and hard snow/ice all over the place.  But amazingly, the trains have been running all day.

It's only snow up here, but it's been snowing non-stop since 9. We're probably at 4-5 inches, and it's not supposed to stop until noon tomorrow. I really, really hope we don't lose power. I'm supposed to work (and do homework) every day between now and Monday. Electricity and internets are kinda integral to all that.

Holy shit, that's a lot more snowfall than what (metro) Atlanta got.

Went to work today- was the only one outside walking around, although there was a fairly large crowd waiting for the train when I got the station.  On the way, some 50+ year old man in a jeep came into the parking lot I was crossing, did a bunch of loops, then drove up and asked if I needed a ride.  WTF?
:what

Took an hour to get to work instead of the usual 25 minutes.  And of course we're completely understaffed but expected to carry on business as usual.   :dizzy

it looks like we are going to be just short of a foot of wintry garbage here in chapel hill by the time the system moves out.

Thankfully it's going to be a warm weekend and we'll thaw out nicely.

That stupid system was just supposed to go up the east coast, but that bitch swung west now. We went from getting 1-3 to probably 8 inches. That is on top of the 10 that we have now.  :shaq2
