the giantbomb people were pretty positive about it in one of the recent podcasts and said it's coming out soon (this or next month?).  same people behind killer instinct and some claim to like that game.

that's the giantbomb that called ninja theory's DmC the best in the series, right?  I like the guys, but they're westaboo as fuck.

only brad said that

Brad is pretty much a 'new is better' kinda bro, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Also Strider Double Helix Edition looks mad ass. Strider 2 is still a wonderful game however, I recommend anyone who wants to get their stride on play that.

I've only played Strider 2 in the arcade and man what a fun game. Doesn't hurt that it looks cool as hell. Would love to get a PS1 copy, but those are pretty expensive. Maybe an import copy would be a bit easier.

As for Giantbomb. Brad's review of DMC called the series basically dead until the new game, which is pretty stupid. They guys weren't fans of the previous games. Thats fine as I don't really care about thier opinions on games honestly. They don't match mine at all and I don't find them particularly insightful when it comes to games like DMC. Plus they don't really seem to be into Japanese games. Again that's fine, I like them because they are funny and seem like cool dudes. I don't have to agree with them.

As for this game, I mean I guess it's something. This developer still has a terrible resume. Yeah, Killer Instinct I guess turned out alright, but that game still seems very obnoxious. Though, that just may be KI's style.

This game is great!  Fantastic Strider/Metroidvania fusion going on here.  The first (real) boss fight had really took me back to the good old days with the attack patterns and platforming skills needed to beat it.  No QTE bullshit, no cinematic crap, no hand-holding...just good game play.   :pimp

Isn't there a demo?  Try the demo.

It's so weird playing a game that cuts out all the bullshit and is just old-school, 100% gimmick and DLC-free, 2D platform action fun in 2014.  Someone still gets it....or got it, I guess- I wonder if this game will be Double Helix's only crowning achievement now that Amazon bought them.

The term "Metroidvania" makes my dick hard... but nearly every game that's been strapped with the label has disappointed me in that regard. Someone report back how Metroidvania this actually is.

Did you look at the control layout?  The d-pad is used for other stuff...and movement speed is analog controlled.

I don't see how it could get any more repetitive than the other Striders or something like Mega Man, for example.  Although it is supposed be like 6-10 hours, right?  Definitely longer than those games.

Game is dookie from the demo. Bad controls due to lack of dpad don't help. Calling it Metroidvania may be accurate in this case but this demo screams "play Guacamelee instead."

I heard this is a weak generic metroidvania and doesn't have the schwing defining sound effect of the Strider franchise when he swings his sword.  Getting 7-8s on sites saying it's "ok" but nothing special.

Looks like KI was the exception and DH still a mediocre dev.

There's nothing bad about the controls.

I also have to note that I have this on PS4.  Does the PS3 version run at half the framerate or anything like that?

When you crouch when you wanted to run right there is. Analog controls in a 2d side scroller lack the precision of dpad. Using analog instead of allowing pad is silly.

This is a slightly different take on the formula, though.   I'm sure you will some people say this is the best one.  For me it's Strider 2, then this (so far), then the original.

This game is getting more and more "metroidvania" the further I get into it, only with more platforming/climbing and way more action in comparison to those games.  The developers have done a really good job with the game progression; new enemies and stage hazards get introduced as you go along.  Mini-bosses you encounter also start showing up as regular enemies.  This is a really good game for fifteen bucks; I'm impressed with it and pleasantly surprised at how good of a job Double Helix did.

The only real complaint I have right now is with dialog.  One of the enemies will constantly talk in some sections, and the text box covers up the bottom portion of the screen.  It can get a bit annoying when you're moving downward.

Looking forward to grabbing this tomorrow off of Steam, but the reviews saying that it feels very same-y have me concerned. One of the things I loved about the orignal Strider was the sheer variety of level design. Level designs that constantly shift every few minutes, with new enemy types and bosses around every corner, and music that changes several times throughout the course of the stage. So far this looks like this has great gameplay, but little of everything else. Hope I'm proven wrong.

Put around 2 hours into this. I really like it so far, however I sometimes run into graphical errors(I don't know the right term for this) where parts of the stage would disappear. You can still run and jump on them, they'd just be invisible.

The original Strider in modern day game form would be Bayonetta.  Strider 1 was about like crazy awesome scenarios non-stop excitement.  That first level and you get inside the centipede thing blew my mind in the late 80s/early 90s whenever it was.  It was about being a fast, badass ninja getting into weird sci-fi action set pieces and slicing stuff.

Wait, holy shit.

Modern day Strider is...Ninja Blade  :-\

fun fact: you can play tons of cool capcom arcade 3D games using this emulator called zinc including strider 2 with his amazing music and kickass manga art

and tech romancer, a fighting game where every character is inspired by a giant robot anime trope

the emulator is pretty old and janky though... i think it has gotten eaten and integrated in the latest version of mame somewhere along the road

Not sure how long I've been playing, but I just beat the birdman boss (on hard). It seems like all you do in this game is run forward and mash X. There's no reason to worry about taking damage since every enemy you kill gives you some health and there are health pods all over the place. None of the enemies (including bosses) are fun to fight and the maps aren't interesting to explore. It seems like the game has music, but the volume is so low that you have to pause the game to actually hear it (and it's ambient shit anyway). Combat feels very sloppy since you HAVE to use the analog stick for some insane reason (not that it really matters since it's completely mindless anyway). At least the game looks decent.

All that being said, the game isn't awful - it's just incredibly boring. Stick with Strider (AC), Osman, Strider 2, and Hard Corps Uprising, they're all much better games.

Did you try messing with the volume settings?  And for challenge, it seems like it's going to be the Survival Mode that opens up after you clear the game.

Anyway, this game is way more Metroidvania than classic Strider.  I think enjoyment of the game will depend on how much you like those kinds of games.  Maybe it's best to describe the game as Shadow Complex, starring Strider?

I just finished the story (<4 hours play time, I didn't go out of my way to collect things). The game has its moments and it does get a little better as it goes on (the final stage in particular is pretty good), but overall I still didn't like it much. It's not bad, though. I just don't want to play it any more.
