Let's talk stand-up, bitches. There's a lot of really interesting things happening these days; a wider appreciation for the art form, and streaming video means that it's easier for people to get exposure n shit.

Obviously, everybody loves Louis CK. And he's great! But, for my money, the best stand-up alive today is Doug Stanhope, who will be back in Asheville in late March. I'm pretty stoked to get to see his show again. His most recent special is "Beer Hall Putsch," on Netflix.



Lots of people will tell you that there are no funny female stand-ups. NOT TRUE! Check out Morgan Murphy's special on Netflix, "Irish Goodbye."

Ross Noble's pretty high up there for me. He never seems to do the same show twice, he just waffles on about something new each night and still manages to be funny. He's a bit like a contemporary Billy Connolly in that respect.

I've become hopelessly addicted to Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, as the show reminds me in many ways of The Bore (buncha old people trolling each other over current events for laughs), and I really wish it was still around. Colin Quinn also did this special a couple years ago that Seinfeld produced called "Long Story Short" where he characterizes the world's old empires as a group of friends with really tenuous relationships. The whole thing is available on Netflix, and here's a clip

sometimes i feel like i'm just not a big laugher. i'll laugh at dumb shit with friends or whatever, but when it comes to scripted/routine stuff, i'll usually sit there entertained, if not bowling over or anything.

then i listen to some doug stanhope and realise it's not my fault, the rest just aren't up to his standard.

Don't get Aziz Ansari since he mostly annoys me. It's either my self loathing or his dune coonery.

He's relied on dune coonery far less as his career has advanced. I honestly can't remember any in Buried Alive.

Sadly I know he did visit, him and my brother are good friends. He's just as unfunny in real life as he is on stage. Arabs love the guy's comedy though.

But comedy widely varies from person to person. What some people think is hilarious doesn't make others crack a smile.

Stoney, I used to listen to Dennis Miller's stand up all the time as a kid. My dad had his albums, and Off White was a favorite. My dad exposed me to a shit ton of stand-up comedy early on in life, including really good stuff like Stephen Wright and Emo Phillips, and some not so good stuff... including Gallagher.

Oh! Another underrated dude: Larry Miller.

I even liked his rant stuff, but what sold me on him was the infrastructure of semi obscure references which were the key to his humor. It's said that humor comes from making unexpected connections, and Miller's style emphasized that while allowing the audience to feel like they'd just become part of a clique by just getting the joke. I loved that, and I think my in-person style of humor is influenced by it to this day.

Sadly, as you note, 9/11 basically broke Miller's brain, and he's been more obviously an intolerant, ranting, climate-change-denying, Iraq war supporter. I remember Jon Lovitz had a talk show a ways back, and Miller was a guest on it; Lovitz had to spoon feed Miller items to get him to trot out even a line or two of rants I'd heard before as responses. It was surreal; I'd thought Miller was just so slippery and fast, but it had either been a massive stockpile of prepared goods, or something had actually changed in the way his brain works.

since his heydey of the 90's he's done lots of good work, great standup, and all that.
But if he died the day after conducting this interview his legacy would have still been secure.

can someone explain Kevan Hart to me. It seems like every few years a comedian becomes That Guy who's everywhere. At one point it was Chappelle, then Dane Cook, then Louis CK, now Hart. I've seen some of Hart's stuff, it's not bad like Cook or something but his delivery is so...meh.
