As of May 20, 2014, certain online functionality offered through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will no longer be accessible. The discontinued services include online play, matchmaking and leaderboards for many Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games. For a comprehensive list of games and services that are affected, please check http://support.nintendo.com/servicesupdate. Users can still play the games in offline mode, which continues to offer a rich game-play experience.

Online play for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games will be unaffected (aside from the Wii mode on Wii U and Nintendo DS games on Nintendo 3DS family systems). Other online functionality, such as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop and video-on-demand services, are also not affected at this time.

We at Nintendo sincerely thank our fans for their continued support of our company’s legacy systems. Your enthusiasm for games made for these systems speaks to their longevity, and the passion of Nintendo fans.

I want a show of hands of the amount of people who were capable of connecting to DS online service. I have never been able in the close to 10 years since the release of Mario Kart ds. No matter what system (ds, 3ds), online connection (multiple college dorms, three different isps at my house).

Apparently DS wifi protocol dislikes most wireless routers, I could never get online either.

any other significant games have dlc in them? i cant for the life of me think of any that i played, put i didnt stick with the ds all the way thru its lifespan.

DS and Wii online only supported WEP which was pretty much as good as no security. WPA/2 support, which is actually capable of securing Wi-Fi, didn't come until 3DS and Wii U.

I also had one of those shitty USB adapter. It only worked half the time, but it was worth it for Tetris and MKDS.

Mario Kart Wii was the only online experience in the Wii/DS era that was positive. It was seamless and worked great. It was fun beating 10 year old Eurotards online.

Everything else ranged from hideous to not even being able to connect online at all. I don't think I was ever able to connect once in Brawl. I got a LAN adapter thinking that would fix things but nope. Didn't even bother with the DS online after a while. The 3DS and Wii U are significant improvements in the fact that you can actually connect online and do things online with those two devices.

Yeah, Mario Kart Wii was soooo good online somehow. Other than the whole not being able to play with friends, I mean, if I had them who wanted to play Mario Kart Wii. I was kinda "wow" at how well it all worked compared to almost anything else on the console. And smashing up what was probably like you say a bunch of ten year olds was good for my self esteem. I think the couple hours I messed with Blops was the only other thing that was any decent, I mean comparatively, Treyarch did a good job.

So at first I was kinda $:-\$ regarding Mario Kart.

But then I remembered I have Sonic & All-Stars Transformed on PC now so

i had a great time with monster hunter 3 but that didn't run on nintendo wifi service if i'm not mistaken so i guess it doesn't count

so i guess i should complain about brawl and how it was impossible to find random matches and how matches with friends would often be laggy messes

actually, it did, but they already shut those servers down iirc.

really? i tought they ran on a separate service because A) they shut it down long ago B) you could talk with strangers without the need of friend codes and the like

No, that's DQ10, the online game. DQ9 just has some key-locked content you need to connect online to get at, plus a shop that sells exclusive items. You can't even get access to the means of flying without those quests. And since the game only has one save file, even if you already have them unlocked, if you want to play again from the start, you have to choose to delete that file and with it, your access to that content.

I have the game but I haven't really played it. Can I connect online early on to enable this stuff or do you have to do it at a specific point in the game?

Pretty early on. You just have to have the Inn at Stornway opened. Then just talk to the shop lady behind the counter on the right, access the shop, and it should unlock everything for you to do in the post game and all the special guests.

OK, the angel on the right is asking me to visit other worlds or bring people into my world. The lady in the middle lets me canvas for guests. Do I have to select something specific?

I wasn't talking about 3ds or wii. I mentioned 3ds because you can play Ds games on it, not 3ds online.
