I always thought Kanye sucked. Middling production, garbage lyrics, and acts like a manchild. The only thing I like about him is that his music evolves, even if the quality never improves but I think the only reason I like that about him is that I found the chipmunk beats to be obnoxious and I'm glad that after a couple of years of that bullshit he moved on to something else.

I'd just rate it based off the songs

Dark Fantasy, Power, All Of The Lights, Monster, Devil In A New Dress, Blame Game, Lost In The World, and Who Will Survive In America=dope. But even those songs have issues with respect to too much going on, especially AOTL and Monster. Yet that doesn't ruin the songs. The first track really explains the album to me. You can tell exactly what RZA did (the drums, piano loop and the lo fi synths), which is amazing...and then Kanye threw a bunch of other shit on the track. But it's still a dope track.

It's a good album, hell you could call it great. I like some of the orchestral flourishes, especially on Devil In a New Dress and Blame Game. The strings on the album are really fucking good, which is why I tend to not focus too much on the over-production. Rap wise Kanye is spitting from beginning to end - he's not a great rapper yet nearly every track features his signature humor.

Runaway sounds like it could have been really good if it was scaled back or if Kanye approached his vocals differently. The piano chords are great, I like the synths, drums are fine, and I think the sample vocals bring it to life. But I wish someone else sung on it. Put Weeknd or someone like that on it, and it's a completely different track IMO.

I could give it a 3.5/5.
