Dear Amazon subscriber
« on: March 13, 2014, 09:41:05 AM »
We are writing to provide you advance notice that the price of your Prime membership will be increasing in 2015. Your 2014 annual renewal will remain at the original price of $79. On July 3, 2015, your membership will renew at $99/year.

Even as fuel and transportation costs have increased, the price of Prime has remained the same for nine years. Since 2005, the number of items eligible for unlimited free Two-Day Shipping has grown from one million to over 20 million. We also added unlimited access to over 40,000 movies and TV episodes with Prime Instant Video and a selection of over 500,000 books to borrow from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

For more information about your Prime membership, visit our Prime membership page.

Sincerely,

I'd been considering dropping it, anyway. They started charging tax here, I don't ever really watch anything on Prime, and I don't order enough month to month to make it worth my while. If you don't watch Prime Video and you only order 10 things a year, that breaks down to $10 a shipment.

Why the fuck can't I just have a cheaper shipping-only plan? I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR GARBAGE SHOWS, AMAZON.

I have been meaning to cancel mine for months, this just seals it. I mean, it's an error that I still have it, since PRIME doesn't extend to international shipping, and the streaming service doesn't carry over to Japan -- hell, videos I've PURCHASED OUTRIGHT are not even available to me unless I'm physically in North America.

Yeah, yeah, vpn or spoof my way to using stuff I've paid for... it's possible, but I don't want to bother with it.

Anyway, I am going back to free express shipping on orders over $25. Or did that change, too?

I dropped my subscription this January after two years. Kentucky has always been charged sales tax from Amazon so no big but I ordered a ton of shit with prime shipping and only a couple of times got the item in two days. What pisses me off most is that we have a huge Amazon distribution center 4 miles from my house.

And they can suck dog dick for not releasing Prime Video for Android devices.

Still do most of my online shopping from them though.

Well, considering the number of times I'll order from US Amazon this year, it's a safe bet that I'll clear that when I do.

Thanks for the info.

And they can suck dog dick for not releasing Prime Video for Android devices.

I saw someone on a non amazon device using the app, that person works for Amazon. So I assume they have an app already, but they just want to be dicks and not release it to us. Either that or it's in development and may come out some day.

I buy too much not to give in, but there is a few other changes that are upsetting to me. You can no longer add new "family members" to your account, and you only get 10 locker pick ups per year. I use the locker to pick up presents I don't want the missus seeing so that kinda sucks.

They want to sell you the locker space on top of the prime price. I don't know what the price is going to be, but when I do I'm sure it won't be reasonable.

Killed my Prime membership; felt good.

I was happy to pay for Prime when I was: (a) in the USA, (b) could receive packages in the USA, (c) could watch Amazon Prime, and (d) could access my "cloud drive" of music and crap.

Amazon's got a great model if I was in the USA, but the fact that I can't watch movies or TV shows or even MUSIC I've "bought" if I'm not physically in the USA is crap.

I'd love to buy a Kindle and load it up with books, but if I buy a Kindle in Japan it is somehow magically locked to Amazon.co.jp rather than .com, so that's out.

This region-specific Internet can go screw itself, starting with Amazon.

Maybe I misunderstand your problem but I think I can buy books from every amazon store? Or the german amazon store has almost all kindle books that Amazon has, I would imagine it's the same for Japan? Or is your problem that you can't use a japanese kindle with your existing Amazon account?

Yes, I have a US Amazon account, and Kindle purchases on it, which can be read on my computer, iPhone, or iPad through the Kindle app, but if I buy a Kindle reader device in Japan, it will not allow me to access my US account, only an account associated with amazon.co.jp

Apple has no location-based IP block restrictions in place for any kind of purchase on their store. The billing address limits an account's region; the account's region determines which "store" can be accessed; the store can be accessed from anywhere in the world. I've purchased music, TV, and movies, rented movies, and uploaded my library through the iTunes Match service. No problems, no hiccups with that, ever.

Amazon only follows this model for MP3 purchases; it allows me to download them.

The cloud-based services, accessing my purchased music through Amazon's servers, accessing streaming video, or even downloading video which I purchased -- these features are all inaccessible from Japan due to the physical location-based IP block check performed before accessing any cloud services.

Boritos have previous suggested spoofing my IP address, but it's easier to just use my Apple account to get the stuff I want, the "internet store" for anything not on iTunes, or just read a (paper) book. I'm just annoyed that Amazon is likely setting the larger stage for non-consumer-facing policies in media distribution.

Fucking infuriating. There's two albums I want from an indie band that are like $7 each but I can't buy them outside of the USA. I could get them on iTunes for $12 but fuck apple.

Didn't renew. Having to paying taxes and a $20 price hike for Prime was enough for me to start buying at regular stores again. I'll still get stuff with free shipping though since prices are generally great on Amazon.

The service is called Amazon Key, and it relies on a Amazon’s new Cloud Cam and compatible smart lock. The camera is the hub, connected to the internet via your home Wi-Fi. The camera talks to the lock over Zigbee, a wireless protocol utilized by many smart home devices.

When a courier arrives with a package for in-home delivery, they scan the barcode, sending a request to Amazon’s cloud. If everything checks out, the cloud grants permission by sending a message back to the camera, which starts recording. The courier then gets a prompt on their app, swipes the screen, and voilà, your door unlocks. They drop off the package, relock the door with another swipe, and are on their way. The customer will get a notification that their delivery has arrived, along with a short video showing the drop-off to confirm everything was done properly.

Amazon blows.

They're still my preferred retailer, online or no.

Still, they suck. Their UI is ALWAYS dogshit. They shit out way too many Kindle models with far too little differentiation. Their content is barf compared to Netflix. AWS is a useful but confusing clusterfuck. They blacklist products from their expansive online store from direct competitors.

Fuck Amazon.

I am stunned at how often I use google to find a product on Amazon. If that's not a sign that your UX/UI blows, I don't know what would be.

You're right, it's surprising that Amazon didn't learn a damned thing after the giant John Sculley Apple Performa clusterfuck about branding when selling hardware to a JC Penney or Sears consumer base. Amazon mass media consumption devices should be simpler than Facebook to choose and operate.

The sheen on Twitch and Comixology dulled severely for me when they sold out to these ruthless corporate fucktards.

I still use them, along with Amazon.com, but I know at any moment Amazon could pull a wooden-splintered dildo carved out of trees from the actual amazon rainforest and fuck my ass to death.

Thank god I'm not an iOS user or the Comixology IAP snafu might have forced me to boycott their shitfaces for good.

I also was not happy about the Comixology snafu. I'm also worried that Amazon's anti-consumer-facing region policies will eventually influence beyond music and video to reflect local rightsholders' distribution contracts.

When I was in the USA, I bought some episodes of Fringe. I didn't have an iOS device that played on TVs, so Amazon Prime's Xbox 360 app seemed practical. Then I tried loading one up on my iPad for a flight, no dice. Tried watching them in Japan, no dice. Tried buying music through Amazon, or re-downloading previous purchases: no dice.

At the very least, Amazon appears to have recently revised their policy on PURCHASED videos, so maybe they've revised on music as well, but it's a complete clusterfuck that about which Apple is unconcerned. So Apple's still getting my money.

Nailed it on the head here. It's easier to google stuff than search their site or use their app. I was searching for some car parts on Amazon the other day and got items listed that were *completely* unrelated to my *very specific* search. On the first page. While sorted by relevance. I never understood why Amazon searches produce such godawful results. You have to wade through a few pages every damn time.
