Should I quit my job?
« on: March 18, 2014, 04:40:35 AM »
Just moved to Denmark and I'm working remotely from home for an overseas company, but with the Danish taxes I will be earning less then someone at McDonalds.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but the job is really performance driven (sales) y. It's just a short term contract and it would net me some extra cash before the wedding though without the hassle of looking for work. It's just very hard to take it seriously when I earn half of what I used to.

Should I quit my job and just try to find some manual immigrant work that pays more (plus start doing full time danish classes instead of just an evening course) or just stick to it for the 3 months and net some cash?

That does seem smart, but when working full time there really isn't a lot of room to look for something else, especially the kind of manual work I would be able to do here.

Thing that annoys me is that I chose evening classes Danish over day classes for this.

I don't know if I should just do the bare minimum for this job now and don't try to please the boss, but on the other hand I have references to think about  :-\

Another option Ive been thinking of is opening my own mobile coffee stand, and this money could help me do that.

Wouldn't running your own mobile coffee stand be "really performance driven (sales)"?

What's your long-term goal?

I don't mind being performance driven a bit, I've worked in sales for 2 years now. It just seems silly to have a boss while I can be free and earn the same crap money running my own coffee stand. Also a coffee stand is not exactly the type of performance pressure sales signing deals etc.

My long term goal is to have my own business, a kid, a dog and a house.

Do you need a capital investment for your business idea? Otherwise you could start that up now in parallel with your current sales job.

Selling coffee sounds like a horrible job in a cold place like Denmark.

Well I would need a few thousand to get going, but I would need to do it full time really otherwise it doesn't make much sense.

Denmark isn't cold really, just normal land/sea climate. It's no sweden/norway. It's like the Netherlands and Germany.

It depends on the business idea. Many people get by with combining their dream job with the security from doing a boring day job.

Good point.

I'm just on a temp contract now for a few months.

Here's a basic rule: Should I quit my job before I find another one? No, never.

Hehe seems so.

But we moved to Denmark cause she is Danish and we live close to family now. So moving here was more of a settling down thing then anything.

If it was about adventure we would have moved elsewhere.

No but we lost a pregnancy last year and then decided that we should be closer to family if we want to start our own. So we moved because of that mainly.

Oh man  :( I didn't know... I'm sorry

I do wish you the best though on your future family. Maybe this job might lead to a better job in the future so you can start that family?

Just stick it out and blow it off as necessary to find other work or if you can't you'll have the money for the cart at the end of your contract.

The advice about sticking with it until you have another job lined up is sound.

I'm truly sorry to hear about the miscarriage.
