I think at least half the reason I tip high is to make up for other black dudes not tipping.

Dating an asian girl now, we walk into a restaurant and it's like we killed someone's grandmother.

I only tip babershops, delivery and waited tables.  I always give generous tips for barbershops and food delivery people but waiters?  If it's not busy and the server just clearly doesn't give a fuck you can suck my balls.  Homeboy is getting loose change (and I'm probably not going back).  I give leeway when it's busy and stuff and I tend to tip generously (more than 20%) when I go out.  The chart just bugs me when it says "never less than 15%".  Fuck that.  Some waiters actually are just lazy pieces of shit and I'd like to (non)tip them out of the industry.

I don't really go to bars so I was unaware of the customs for bar tipping.  I generally just leave 20% or so.  That seems less confusing to me than amounts per drink type thing.

only time i ever tip less than 15% is if the service completely sucks because the waiter if some jackoff twentysomething who thinks theyre to good for the job or whatever. or the rare situation ive had where the waiter is the owner and also clearly an angry psycho on the verge of killing his wife or something.

but people who give bad tips for stupid-as-fuck reasons (i didnt like the food/it wasnt made just perfect to how i like it) can choke on pubes. stay home til you learn to be decent people.

Once I went to a restaurant and my own server was ignoring the fuck out of me, but a guy from another table kept coming by and asking me if I needed anything.  So when the bill came I asked the manager if I could leave a dollar for my waiter and then I left a 30% tip for the other waiter that kept coming by.

Like I said, if I leave less than 15% it's because I also think the restaurant/employees are pieces of shit.  Not just busy/having a rough night.  That's understandable.  Being indifferent or outright ignoring your table deserves a dogshit/insulting tip.  Suck it, brehs.

You know what you do in that situation?  Talk to the manager instead of leaving some passive aggressive tip like a shutin.  Sometimes shit went down at the restaurant and they'll be happy to apologize, comp some shit.

:beli nothing wrong with fearing the outside world breh

but most of the time when something goes wrong the waiter will come tell me, or will apologize and fix the problem if i have to bring it to their attention. im fine with that. its when i tell them somethings wrong and they still dont fix it that i have a problem. if everyone at the table has finished and i havent even been able to start eating because of the waiters fuckup AND they arent even gonna comp my meal? well have fun bumming drinks from your friends this weekend cuz you aint getting shit from me.

I don't think I've ever tipped less than 15% as an adult. Bad service included. Everyone has an off day, an off shift, an off hour. And everyone has to put food on the table. Yeah it sucks that you ran into it, but fuck it. That's how the world works sometimes.

Generally I tip:

20 - 30% on good service
15% otherwise
$2 for beer, $3 for mixed drink (lol like I'm ordering a mixed drink tho)

Hair and shit...guys you need to tip. Like for real. I tip $5 at the place I get my eyebrows threaded and $8 on my hair. Job is too important not to be rewarded.

Yeah, I don't feel comfortable assessing the service and stuff and basing my tip on that, it makes me feel like I'm lording it over them or something. Sometimes I'll go over 20% if I think I was being a pain in the ass.

(pro-tip: instead of giving them a single, give them a fiver. They remember you that way.)

Also, I have to say starting to go bald at 22 was the smartest decision I ever made. I haven't paid for a haircut in like 15 years- been doing that shit with clippers myself ever since. Did make dating a hairstylist awkward this past year, tho- kept saying I was "the enemy."

Also, what guarantee is there that it stops here?

I generally tip 16-18%. I calculate 15% then round up + add a buck or two. I just can't accept 20% as the new standard, sorry. :-\

I would NEVER tip less than 15%, though. That's a good way to get free spit on your food next time you show up.

From that list, I tip waiters, bartenders, and hairstylists. The idea of tipping a barista is :neogaf

Trying to raise the default to 20% reminds me of the creepy tactics of DeBeers - in the 60s, an engagement ring was "one month's salary"; in the 90s, "how to make two month's salary last forever." I noticed a lot of weird chatter in movies and TV shows recently about "three months salary" and yup, DeBeers is trying to raise that bar and paying for "three month" placement.

If there are actual economic reasons the acceptable minimum needs to go from 15% to 20%, I'd be curious to know...

I typically get awesome servers that earn their tip. Like the woman who was super honest at the chinese restaurant when we were ordering. Hilarious.

"can we uh get the broccoli beef"
"you don't want that"
"oh well what do you recommend?"

Then she listed off the good shit. Ah yeah. Honest servers rule.

Good ol Japan.  No tipping required, they just calculate the cost of paying their staff better than a slave into your meal's price.
This is the ideal solution, but it's never going to happen.  You know what the wage is in some states for tipped employees?  $2.13 :fbm

Yeah, that's fucked up.  I don't think they're allowed to do that in Canada.  Servers in Canada always get at least minimum wage, plus tips.
It's an intractable situation here.  Places where the cost of living is higher obviously have passed higher minimums, but shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, most of America?  It's going to be 2.13 for a long time.  Lesson is tip your servers well or they'll wonder why your poor ass isn't home eating cold spaghetti-os.
