Colbert to Replace Letterman
« on: April 10, 2014, 12:36:57 PM »
I don't really watch these late night shows anymore. But I grew up loving Letterman. And I like Colbert. So I like this. Much better than the Neil Patrick Harris rumours imo.

I like this, Colbert is great. I still probably won't watch, though.

The bar is so low for 'success' in late night anymore, I'm sure he'll do okay. But, I can't see why anyone would want to watch him over Conan/Kimmel or the SNL dude. If you are into that type of format.

Every time I've seen Colbert drop his schtick, he was pretty bland and kind of smarmy.

I don't like Kimmel at all. His humour is low brow and fairly dumb for my taste. Everybody has their own taste of course.

I like Conan but I would watch Colbert over him. Colbert has a slightly more edgy but still polite approach that I like more than Conan although I like them both. You couldn't pay me to watch Jimmy Fallon.

But like I said everybody is different and comedy is the most subjective of arts hence the awful Jay Leno ruling the roost for so long.

The reality is that most of us experience these shows through clip sites the next day if anything funny happened. That being said I'm much more likely to watch a Conan/Colbert clip than the other guys.

Yeah I don't really get this either. Especially compared to Jimmy Kimmel.

yeah, if I watch these, it's clips on youtube.  but I'm glad ferguson wasn't moved up to replace letterman.  he's the only one of the bunch that's consistently fun as an interviewer and has a good rapport with guest.  conan is hit or miss, but makes it up with entertaining sketches.  from what I can tell the best thing fallon has going are the games he plays with his guests.

Yeah ferguson is a different kind of beast. Where as nearly all the other shows are direct riffs on Letterman/Carson tropes , his is a slightly different feel. I like him and his show whenever I catch it. But like most of these shows that isn't very much.

I don't watch late-night talk shows so it doesn't matter to me what they do, but I am curious to see how Colbert handles hosting a "real" show vs. The Colbert Report.

Why do I get the feeling that this is going to suck? I love Colbert and the Colbert Report, don't care for Letterman but I understand his influence. I just don't see Colbert working in an hour long network show.

Because late night talk shows on network TV are designed to appeal to old white people, the same demographic that Colbert made his bones making fun of. CBS is going to neuter him.

Eh.  This is the same network that let a show about a sex-crazed alcoholic become the most popular show on TV for damn near ten years.  I don't think CBS is gonna do anything unless the ratings aren't what they want.  I think Colbert has the name and following to boost Late Show over the Tonight Show.

They basically let Letterman fart around for 15 years without doing a damn thing.  I think they'll be open to what Colbert wants to do.

That's the thing, what does he want to do? This is a format that hasn't changed in 50 years and won't because of how the ratings work out.

We've gotten to see two guys "REINVENT EVERYTHING" in the genre three times in four years. And Conan and Jimmy Fallon are the same as its always been.

And Colbert won't be continuing the hardline politics, no matter what Rush Limbaugh thinks: http://www.mediaite.com/online/limbaugh-blasts-colbert-pick-cbs-has-just-declared-war-on-the-heartland-of-america/

I am guessing Ferguson's show would have to change too much to take up Late Night. His show works best where it is.

Not sure how Colbert will be without the armor of satire. I am curious enough to check it out.

538 says that Letterman viewers voted Obama/Romney like 55/20 or something like that, for what it's worth

Letterman was quasi-independent due to owning the production

I've never seen him drop the shtick completely, so to speak. There's always a bit of "Colbert" in him, as evidenced by his interviews elsewhere. See: His recent guest appearance of on Jimmy Fallon. He can always partially bring that character and mannerism out for a few laughs, just like how Conan switches up his tone on the fly. I think he's a very smart entertainer, and will find a way to satisfy both his fans and the Late Show audience. He'll do great.

I think it's more on CBS' part than Ferguson's. Apparently his contract was up this summer, and he had a clause where if they went with someone else to replace Letterman he got a pretty hefty payout. I think Les Moonves said in an interview they were thinking about going with a woman for the 12:30 time slot. I would totally watch all kinds of Amy Sedaris videos the next day if she got the gig.
