Bought a 2DS
« on: May 04, 2014, 03:54:38 PM »
 :neogaf

Well, it was on sale at Best Buy for $99 this week, and I got it for $55 with game trades. Picked up Mario Kart 7 with it. I figure I don't really give a shit about the 3D. Not enough to pay extra, anyway.

First impressions:

Resolution:  :kobeyuck

Build quality:  :holeup

But anyway, it was only $55. Plus I can toss it to the fiance's kids when they come over and get bored, and not really care if they wreck it. What are some must-have 3DS titles? Keep in mind that I don't really care for JRPGs (not an insult to anyone who does, they're generally just not my thing), and I will never play Pokemon. Ever.

Fuck. Fine, be that way. Get MH3U.

Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Cashmo, HarmoKnight, and Mutant Mudds are legit too.

Oh and pick up a Nintendo point card when you can. There's a lot of genuinely cool stuff on the eShop but unfortunately the prices are much higher than what you'd find on iOS/Google Play. Best Buy seems to be putting eShop cards on sale once in a while so be on the look out for that.

It shouldn't, although there are a few bonus rooms where 3D makes the jumping "puzzles" much easier to complete, due to the isometric perspective, with the game even signaling you to turn 3D on.

I'm not one for JRPGs either, but there's still plenty of 3DS games out there.  I would still get Zelda A Link Between Worlds, though.  That's too good to pass up on.  Both the Resident Evil games are pretty fun, however Revelations is better on the consoles/PC.  The Mercenaries 3D is a great arcade-style 3rd person shooter which got a lot of hate due to the how the game treats save data, so make sure to get it new or from the eShop if you don't want someone else's save present on the cart.

Don't see the point in typing up lists, but instead just want to suggest a game NOT to buy- New Super Mario Bros. 2.  That was quite a let down.  3D Land is much better.

Heh. I bought one earlier this month from Target and have yet to unbox it because eShop DRM and not really having a spare SD card.

Okay, that's a half-lie: I did unbox it and I disagree with the build-quality statement. It's tolerable and decent. Nothing amazing but for what it is (a fisher-price toy) it's tolerable. But yeah, outside of like 3-4 games for the system, I'm in the same "what games  :-\" boat.  :-\

Non JRPG recs:

Super Mario 3D
New Super Mario Bros 2 (pick Mario 3D over this, at least)
Professor Layton
Luigi's Mansion 2
Ghost Recon Shadow Wars
Zelda (OOT3D, Link Between Worlds)
Donkey Kong Returns
Resident Evil Revelations (though this is on PC/Console, so save yourself the strain)
Kirby (just came out)
Mario is playing Golf (just came out)
Mario is playing Tennis

Not being a weeb can seriously diminish your enjoyment of the machine - but there are demos on the store, and probably some cool stuff on eShop. Be warned of Nintendo's neanderthal online account system...

How does it feel ergonomically?  Both the 3DS and XL are the most uncomfortable handhelds I have ever used.

It feels nice, actually. It's solid, and your fingers naturally go to the top triggers.  What I mean by  :holeup build quality is that the plastic casing feels cheap, like you could scratch the shit out of it with just your fingernails.

OK, will do a list after all for some E-Shop titles:

-Sega 3D Classics: 3D Space Harrier and 3D Galaxy Force II are amazing conversions of the arcade originals.  3D Sonic, Streets Of Rage, and Shinobi III are also excellent conversions from the Genesis.
-Wayforward: Shantae Risky's Revenge is a good platform/action game, and the Mighty series (Mighty Flip Champs, Might Milky Way, and Mighty Switch Force 1 and 2) are excellent action-puzzle games.
-If you can stand high doses of uguu~, try Ace Attorney Dual Destinies.  If you can stand meltdown levels of perversion added to the uguu~, Senran Kagura Burst is a fun beat-em-up.  It's better than Code Of Princess, which is slow and slowdown-filled.

It feels nice, actually. It's solid, and your fingers naturally go to the top triggers.  What I mean by  :holeup build quality is that the plastic casing feels cheap, like you could scratch the shit out of it with just your fingernails.

It looks cheap in pictures, yeah.  Am actually hoping that yet another revision comes out this year or next year with increased comfort and a look that doesn't scream "babby's first handheld."

lol I'm sorry, I missed out the no JRPGS bit. I like what Bork Laser did so I'll do a quick one sentence description for each game to provide a more catered list!

Retail Releases:
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Throwing this in here because it's a big deal on the system but I'm sure your already familiar with this collector ocd simulator.
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
This is a port of the Wii original which is an awesome 2D platformer and a must-play if you've never tried it out.
  • Fire Emblem Awakening
While this is the best turn-based strategy game on the system it also features heavy JRPG silliness so be warned.
  • Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
If you just want a great strategy game without the JRPG fluff then pick this up instead.
  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Best Kirby game in years but it's short with relatively little challenge as usual.
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
I'm hesitant to recommend this because the controls are miserable but the rest of the game is top-notch.
  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
It's a remake but with a completely new graphics engine, issues from the original have been fixed, and the master quest mode is included
  • Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds
An awesome pseudo-sequel to LttP that changes the formula up a bit by letting you rent items to tackle dungeons in any order.
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
A great follow-up to the GameCube original and it's a fairly lengthy game with multiplayer to boot.
  • Mario Golf World Tour
An awesome portable golf game with a ton of content and wacky power-ups you can use to mix things up.
  • Mario Tennis Open
A solid yet uninspired tennis game but the gameplay is pretty fun.
  • Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
This is a great puzzle series but I'd recommend starting here since the recent Azran Legacy is a direct sequel.
  • Resident Evil: Revelations
Another solid entry to Resident Evil, not much else to say.
  • Super Mario 3D Land
The best Mario game on the system with a ton of levels; a must buy.
  • Star Fox 64 3D
Unlike the Zelda remake this is a no frills port but it still features a complete graphics makeover.

eShop Releases:
  • 3D Classics (series)
This series are enhanced ports of Nintendo and arcade classics but the 3D effect is a big part big part of the appeal.
  • Art of Balance TOUCH!
A simple stacking game that's surprisingly fun.
  • Cave Story
I'm sure you're aware of Cave Story and here's yet another version of it.
  • Colors! 3D
Not a game per-se but a nifty drawing app if you want to doodle on your system.
  • HarmoKnight
A rhythm action platformer from the Pokémon dudes with a ton of levels to justify the high price point.
  • Ketzal's Corridors
Sort of like a third person tetris where you need to rotate objects to fit through the holes in a wall that you're about to slam into.
  • Liberation Maiden
A wacky top-down action game from SUDA51 that has you flying around Japan blowing up aliens.
  • Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move
A Nintendo puzzle game that's a bit like pipe dream except you're doled out pieces like tetris to direct toys around to reach an exit.
  • Mighty Switch Force! (series)
This is a time-based action platformer that requires you to save people and exit the level as fast as possible.
  • Mutant Mudds
A super simple 2D platformer that's become a cult classic on the system.
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies
I'm sure you're already familiar with the series and this is one of the better games.
  • Picross e (series)
If you like Picross this is your best and only bet on the system.
  • Pushmo / Crashmo
Nintendo's own unique puzzle game where you need to push/pull blocks to reach the top.
  • Retro City Rampage: DX
This is yet another retro action game however it plays very similarly to Grand Theft Auto with a ton of 80's and game humor.
  • Rusty's Real Deal Baseball
A freemium mini-game collection but it features a unique haggling mechanic where you can get cheaper prices on DLC.
  • Sega 3D Classics (series)
Like the Nintendo ones, these are amazing handheld ports but hard to recommend since 3D is a big part of the appeal.
  • Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword
Another eShop game from Nintendo with unique timing-based sword gameplay.
  • SteamWorld Dig
This is a super fun game that has you digging through the ground to explore vast underground mines.
  • StreetPass Mii Plaza DLC
If you like the StreetPass feature this DLC offers four new mini-games to give you more to do.
  • Steel Diver: Sub Wars
Another freemium game but it's the system's only first person shooter for some reason.
  • vvvvvv
I'm sure you've heard of it but this is a difficult Commodore 64 inspired action/exploration game.

There are also a bunch of Virtual Console releases available for the GameBoy, GameBoy Color, Game Gear, and NES that are worth picking up if you're into emulation. There's a ton of good stuff out there so I won't list it all but the highlights include: the Zelda Oracle games, Shantae, the Wario series, the Sonic Game Gear games, Donkey Kong for GB, and there are a ton of classics available on NES.

Since I'm a CRAZY PERSON I also added links to all the recommendations to make it easy for Eel to browse for shit. I figured this is a good place as any to throw down some quality suggestions since the eShop really has a ton of great stuff that not a lot of people buy, lol.

I also omitted stuff that I personally enjoy, like Yumi's Odd Odyssey and Attack of the Friday Monsters!, because those are pretty esoteric games.

Ever.

One thing I noticed is that FPS fans tend to not like RPGs and vice versa... not really sure about non-RPGs on the platform, as that is what I primarily play... aside from the obvious first-party titles, I'd recommend Code of Princess. It's similar to Guardian Heroes, a lot of slowdown and a little on the easy side but it's fun. Theatrhythm FF is a fun rhythm game but you would probably miss out on the nostalgia factor.

That's a stupid notice. I'll play both, but in the case of JRPGs my time investment is too short now a days to put up with random encounters.

Of course there are some that play both but most of the people I talk to tend towards one or the other (myself included, I don't like FPS).

New color out June 6.

:whew I actually think this looks super nice. Would probably be the color I'd go for if I didn't already have a superior XL.

I would hate on the 2DS since it's obviously inferior but Nintendo put that front and center by naming the thing 2DS. Can't hate on truth in advertising.
