Destiny budget = 500 million, goodbye kotick

500 million for floaty Halo: Borderlands?

Kotick is gonna be fired so hard after this bombs.

Quote
“If you’re making a $500 million bet you can’t take that chance with someone else’s IP,” he stated. “The stakes for us are getting bigger.”

Analyst have since said that the figure could set a record for the most spent on making a single game. Reuters was told that to break even Bungie and Activision would need to sell between 15 million to 16 million units.

If they want to kickstart a new IP then they need to spend loads on marketing. I believe seamless multiplayer experiences is going to be huge this generation but I'm not sure if this is it. The compatibility with last-gen hardware is an ominous sign.

Call of Duty is going to die eventually and they need to replace it with something else. They already ran the Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero franchises into the ground. Studios like Neversoft and Raven are now stuck working on map packs to CoD.

I think the timing is bad here. Old gen dying. Next gen not big enough yet to cover the shortfall. You could say that about all games but at least something like COD is a proven thing in that case with an existing fanbase.

People didn't think Boarderlands was going to be a big hit either. To be fair, I do actually hear everyday people say they think this game looks good. That Acitivision marketing sure is going to push the hell out of this game. So I bet this does better then people actually think. I mean you guys think Halo has meh FPS gameplay, but that series has always been popular for whatever reason.

I doubt anyone back at the release of CoD 2 thought CoD would be what it is now.

the $500 million isn't for one game, is it? I thought the idea behind Destiny to treat it like a changing growing service.

still, $500 million is, what, double GTAV?

who knows.  maybe this will be gaming's avatar.  looking boring prerelease, is boring at release, but somehow resonates with people and makes absurd bank.

Didn't Skyrim sell 20 million?

Even the biggest shit games sell a lot in this industry.

People have to remember that games are like crack. And developers are like dealers. Remember those lines from Stringer Bell when he was explaining to D'Angelo how shit was fucked up and the shit they sold was poor quality but people kept buying? Quality goes down and people buy twice as much, yo.

This is your personal bias trying to be warped into some kind of opinion. Skyrim sold 20 million for reasons that have nothing to do with whatever elitist type foolishness you are trying to spout.

COD became big because of COD 4. It was a revolutionary game for its time that completely changed the trajectory of that franchise from being a good seller to a mega seller. So I would argue this is a slightly different situation. Halo was a series that arguably made FPS games popular in general on a console (after Goldeneye of course). The resulting sales were a mix of momentum, good marketing, and a certain level of quality. Destiny will get a lot of cred because of bungie. And I'm sure the marketing will be very good. But it will need to still build its own fanbase from relatively scratch.

None of this is to say the game won't sell. It's coming out on 4 platforms and is being pushed by a major publisher. It's just the level of success that is being debated.

Sony GAF has also hyped up Killzone, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, ect ect.

Call of Duty is probably the best selling game on the system.

What I'm saying is let's not just go by GAF.

And yeah a isn't Destiny supposed to be some 10 year game? Quite honestly the MMO FPS has yet to be done well and hit critical mass. Destiny is trying that and while it just seems like Boarderlands now, maybe it will be more then that.

the huge investment makes a little sense, if you look at it in the right light and the right angle.

Activision desperately needs more diversity to their product lineup (hey, maybe shutting down Bizarre and Radical wasn't such a good idea), but they only seem to want to do games that have massive, blockbuster sort of appeal.

also, I'm pretty sure 500 mil is the investment over the life of the series.  Development and marketing for multiple games.  How the hell does Bungie even spend that much on one game, did they invest heavily in a parallel space program so they could have more accurate sci-fi shit to the game?

500 mil is probably about what Activision has already spent on Call of Duty in total for the last gen or so, so this actually seems like a reasonable call.  Sorta.

And it seems Bungie can't let go of "Halo," as far as art-style and their sci-fi arts-tyle goes. :/ Power-armor, the same textures just slightly different...

If someone told me this was "Halo 4 on all consoles," I'd probably believe them at first.

Halo 1,3, ODST and Reach were pretty fun games. The enemy encounters especially on the higher difficultly levels are what made it for me.

Destiny looks like an incredibly dumbed down version of that approach. I also don't like that they keep showing the same area off in every video.

I know they want to attract the majority shootbang crowd with this but I wish they'd show more exploration elements. I know they'll be at the Sony E3 show but that's the worse place to show these sort of games as it will no doubt be another 10 mins of them shooting things

I think the game looks completely competent and is almost certainly a solid if not good game.

For some reason it utterly bores me to tears though. So much so that I'm debating not getting it any more. No actual solid reason for such a stance. Just that nothing about it looks especially new or interesting to me.

Played about 2 hours of the Alpha. Thoughts:

Look and Feel
Visually it's a pretty good looking game. It's not mind blowing, likely because it IS still cross gen, but there's a lot of nice texture work and lighting. It's really sharp too with not many AA issues.
I'm enjoying the way the guns feel quite a bit as well. It's like a combination of COD and Halo, with the slider closer to the Halo side of things. It's weighty and your guns have force behind them. Some really awesome pistol and shotguns in this.

Structure
It wasn't until recently that I fully grasped how the game was structured, but it's not really complicated. You have a hub you go back to, this is where you buy upgrades, weapons, armor, or craft items, or team up and compare loot. You then hop into your ship and pick a place to go. In the Alpha there's only "Old Russia" and in that zone there's 3 missions to choose from. It's here where you get what they're going for. The three missions int he Alpha are a story mission, a "strike" mission, and an "exploration" mission.

The Story mission is basically the main campaign that is require to progress through the game. These are usually the easier missions since they want you to continue. These can be done single player or coop. I don't know if you can stumble on online players in these. I didn't experience that myself. They drop you into a zone and there's a clear objective marker you have to reach and accomplish.

Strike missions are cooperative, repeatable, missions with one or more goals that will most definitely require multiple people to complete. This is where I saw the Diablo/Borderlands comparisons. Enemies are usually high level and take tons of damage and using all your skills and powers is gonna be needed to actually finish. I got to the end of one of these and quit out because it was too difficult.

Exploration missions basically drop you into the zone without any real goal. Spread out around the zone are little "beacons" that send you on random little missions. Basic stuff like "clear out the enemies in this area" or "go head and scan the area" or "go hear and kill this enemy" stuff like that. THESE seem to be the most repeatable since there didn't appear to be an end. In addition you can literally go anywhere in the zone and find stuff. What kind of stuff is out there remains to be seen but I was able to find at least two loot chests. Also you'll stumble on areas with extremely high level enemies. Literally within the first few seconds of dropping into the Alpha I went into this little shack with stairs down and stumbled into a bunch of enemies twice my level.  I assume these missions are where you will tend to find random online people to play with.

And that's basically it for the Alpha. It doesn't seem like there are more missions because after I finished the Story mission, it didn't unlock any more. I think this is just a really basic test on the online infrastructure. I hope that the later Beta has some actual progression.

There's been some confusion over the "loot" aspect. I can say that you're not going to be seeing Borderlands 2 or Diablo 3 levels of loot. That's just not what they're going for. However there IS loot. Enemies DO drop armor and weapons and they ARE colored based on their rarity. During my time I collected a bunch of trash loot and some drops that required me to go back to the hub and "unencrypted" to see what kind of item it is. Just don't expect opening chests and seeing tons of items spilling out.

So to boil it down, here's what I liked and didn't like:

Likes:

-The way the guns feel when you shoot them
-The feel of the character movement
-The structure and how it seems to combine Borderlands/Diablo/Halo
-The way it handles playing online. During a strike mission it quickly matched me up with fellow players and we quickly were playing the mission
-Exploring zones seems like it can be a lot of fun, barring that they actually fill them with interesting things to fine and do.

Didn't like:

-So the game needs a little work in how it handles respawning enemies. As I was moving through the zone I would clear an area out, walk away fro a minute and come back to find the same enemies returned. It's weird since  there are times and sections where you can literally SEE where the game is spawning enemies. There was one mission I picked up to kill a specific type of enemy and what I was doing was basically killing that enemy. Walking away a bit, and I could see the monster closet it was spawning out of and then killing it over and over. It was super silly. I understand WHY it's setup this way but I hope this can be tweaked a bit. It makes the game feel like an MMO. They just respawn way too quick is what I'm saying.
-The waypoint system needs to be changed IMO. You have to press the touchpad to bring it up and then it goes away after a few seconds. The problem is that the zones are really dense and complicated and it's bit unclear what I'm supposed to be doing so essentially I;m just pressing the button, going to the next waypoint, waiting for it to go away, then doing it again. Needs a little work.

Overall I definitely enjoyed what I played. A PC version would be EVEN BETTER but this version is serviceable. Totally looking forward to picking this up in September.

There's also multiplayer, which had a pretty classic Halo feel to it, right down to the turrets and vehicles you can pilot.  I liked what I played-- nothing mind-blowing about this, but it's like getting the real Halo 4...on a Sony console.

Played for a bit yesterday.  It's a lot less Borderlands than I thought; more MMORPG trapping than Diablo.  loot drops are infrequent and it seems like you're expected to stick with and level up armor and weapon (almost like ratchet and clank) for some time before upgrading.  I didn't join any parties or opt for co-op, but when I dropped into the story Russia map there were other players there; occasionally I helped and was helped by other players.  At one point the sky went dark and it said there was this big event happening, to defend some satellite, and a mess of players showed up to fight against the swarms of enemies.  it was pretty cool.  then there's a hub thing that makes the game third person where you buy equipment, decrypt items, take bounties, etc.  Haven't tried the strike mission yet.

random stuff:
-seems to have three way battles (enemies fight enemies).
-ADS isn't necessary.  I've been playing it like halo, never using the left trigger, and guns seem to stay accurate when hip firing.
-combat almost feels like halo but between the grenades on slowdown and melee nerfed by rpg stats, it, uh, doesn't? not to say it isn't fun.  gunplay is solid.

and it's probably an alpha thing but it expects you to choose your class based on no information.  I created three characters to see the skill trees and decided to go with the assassin because he had a knife throwing ability and double jump that's upgradable to a triple jump.  the warrior has a jetpack.  the mage has a...magic jetpack, but the highest upgrade is a teleport/blink ability.

I want it on PC

oh, and peter dinklage could not give less of a shit when reading these lines.  at first I thought he's supposed to be an emotionless robot, but he has characters lines like "I have a bad feeling about this." "Watch Out, it's a moon wizard!" all delivered in the same dull tone.  I don't get what direction bungie went with him.

There's also multiplayer, which had a pretty classic Halo feel to it, right down to the turrets and vehicles you can pilot.  I liked what I played-- nothing mind-blowing about this, but it's like getting the real Halo 4...on a Sony console.

Lyte, will you play Destiny PS4 with me?  :-*
no
